At closing who do you HAVE to tip??
I know about the title person - What shall we tip him?
Anyone else? Please state who and the least amount possible!
TIA

You don't HAVE to tip anyone...though you're typically strong-armed into tipping the Title Guy. For us, it was "suggested" we give $100.

We didn't tip anyone. It was never even suggested to us that we should tip anyone.

Tipping at closing?!?! That seems so wrong for some reason. Its a professional person in an office, doing their job. What entitles them to a tip?? (maybe our closings here in Maryland are different than in NY?)

We didn't "tip" anyone.
We wrote a check out to the title person for $100 as per our lawyers instructions. I thought it was a "fee" as opposed to a tip.

Same here.
I am pretty sure it is a fee not a tip. It's not exactly a tipping industry.

ditto, we're good friends with our title person, and never said anything and we're still friends after the fact.

Re: At closing who do you HAVE to tip??
We were told by our lawyer to tip the tiltle person $100. It's customary and I don't think they actually get paid much. It's also supposed to ensure that your deed gets filed (or whatever is supposed to happen) in a timely manner. It's probably all BS but I didn't want to take a chance.

Re: At closing who do you HAVE to tip??
As previous posters have said it isn't a tip it is a fee. Title closers do not get paid by the title company unless the title closer owns the title company which is very rare that they will be the title closer. In some instances you may not even know that you gave the title closer an attendance fee as some of them include it in the title bill. It is customary to give them anywhere from $75 to $150. It also depends on if the sellers are giving a fee to the closer because they will do that if there is a mortgage and the title closer will handle paying it off and the title closer will get what is called a pick up fee usually $175 to $200. This came up in another post not too long ago. The title closer would be the only "tip" which I don't like to refer to it as that you would write out.

Why wouldn't you tip the mortgage broker and lawyers while you were at it

Re: At closing who do you HAVE to tip??
You should DEFINATELY tip the title person....usually between $100-$125 if you are the Purchaser. They are in charge of confirming that before you hand in ALL of your money to your Sellers...and you are in fact getting "clear" title...so you dont have issues in the future. They get paid crap by the title companies and most of their income in based on "tips". They are at closing anywhere between 2-3 hours...and most title companies pay $35-45 per closing. Other than the title person...you don't have to "tip" anyone else. Everyone else is getting paid for their services.

You don't tip the mortgage broker or the attorney...because you are already paying them whatever their fees are at closing.
