None. At all. I will not even take a sip if I am driving.

After you have even one drink, your ability is slightly impaired to even be able to make a decision as to whether or not you are sober.

Completely Agree - NONE

I used to have two with dinner and drive. I dont think I would do it again. A friend of mine is a probation officer and has a breathalizer. I took it after having two glasses of wine with dinner. I blew 0.08. i had NO IDEA that i would blow so high. Had one more drink, blew 0.11. You really dont know how high you might blow, or how drunk you really are, unless you actually use a breathalizer. I felt totally fine after two glasses, slightly buzzed at three.

Re: sorta spinoff: drinking and driving

One is my limit, and that is usually 3 or 4 hours before I get behind the wheel. I am usually designated driver because I do not mind not drinking and would rather make sure everyone is home safe.

If you are very concerned, you can buy your own breathalizer. In college friends bought it and it was helpful, because usually you think you are fine.

I feel badly for your friend, but I feel worse for the innocent people in her path that may have been harmed. If you don't care enough about yourself to not drive, fine, but think of the other people on the road.

(with the exception of hitting a cabs side view mirror, but he was double parked and i woulda done that with no drinks in me)
________________________________

Unfortunately, chances are if you would have been caught "hitting" the mirror and the cops were called. You could have been arrested for drunk driving. And the cab driver would just get a ticket for being double parked.

Definitely not worth it. Next time consider calling a cab or a friend for a ride home.

OH and to answer the original question, DH & I stopped drinking 3 1/2 yrs ago. So needless to say, we've been the designated driver many times over the last few yrs.

It's a good idea to have a backup plan beforehand in case the designated driver has too much to drink. The way I see it, a few parking tickets, even a boot or a tow, a fine - whatever the consequences may be of leaving the car where it is are FAR better than possibly killing someone. Chat Icon

I'll have one glass of wine or one beer at dinner and then drive a couple hours later. My body can metabolize it within that time frame.

I won't drink if I need to drive sooner than that or if I don't eat. And I won't drive if I have more than one.

last night i had 4 drinks.

the first being at 7:30 pm and the last was prob at 9:30 pm.

and i drove at about i dont know, 12:30.

i don't know if i was sober enough, or that drunk state where you THINK you are ok.

i wish i didnt drive, thank god i drove absolutely fine.

(with the exception of hitting a cabs side view mirror, but he was double parked and i woulda done that with no drinks in me)

ETA: i was most definatly NOT planning on driving, i just had to because the driver wasnt in the condition to. and i wanted to be on the "safe side". if i knew i was gonna drive i would have only had the one drink.

Just because you drank less than someone else doesn't mean you are sober enough to drive. You should have called a cab... Hopefully next time you will - because you might not be so lucky.

ETA - I never have more than 1 drink if I'm driving - and that's rare. One of us (DH or myself) will not drink at all and be the DD.

I wish I could say this has been my philosophy my whole life. I am sure I have gotten behing the wheel a few times in my life with more than just one drink in me (many years ago)... but NEVER again.

I had a really strong drink the other night....and then I had to drive home from NYC to NJ - at night. That one strong drink was too much for me (I am a lighweight, I hardly drink). And I ate pasta too!

None...If I am driving I will not have 1 drink.

And the right thing to do would have been for your friend to leave her car parked in the garage and pick it up the next day. Paying a few extra bucks to stay safe and keep people around me safe is the smart and right thing to do.

For me it depends on how long I will be somewhere.

If I"m going to be there for hours (4+), 1 drink is my limit if I've had food. If I have an empty stomach, then I drink water.

I can still have a good time hanging out with everyone else & watching the other drunks.

for me - 2 is my limit if I am eating

and 1 if I am not

Pretty much same rule of them for me. Although it depends on how long I am going to be somewhere

None. If I know I have to drive somewhere, I won't drink anything. It makes me too nervous, and I wouldn't enjoy it anyway!

i will drink two beers or one "drink" and still drive - but i will drink at the beginning of the night and then drink water

i also limit my drinking when FH has to drive bc I want to make sure that I am sober enough to make sure HE is sober enough to drive - he is not a big drinker though maybe a beer or two.

i've grown out of the whole drinking a lot thing- i'm 27, its time to! but, if we do go out and are drinking, i usually drive because i just don't like drinking as much as DH or my friends do. this fall, the mom of a student in my school was killed by a drunk driver- AND the drunk driver had her own 3 year old daughter in her car, too!!! the drunk driver had been out at a party, they tried to take her keys- she thought she was fine... and now she ended up leaving a 10 year old little girl without a mom. even since then i've realized how important it is to not go crazy and then drive.
as far as your situation last night, the married ADULT thing to do would have been to call a cab for both of you and go back with your friend today to get her car.... and way to edit the post where you said you were "Drunko" Chat Icon

Re: sorta spinoff: drinking and driving

just want to say i agree with everyone here, but i was once drinking in the city and took a cab and the cab driver was drunk! He completely side swipped a parked car (not a mirror tap, he slammed the side of it) and than screeched off with me in the car! so much for safe modes of transportation, i jumped out as soon as i could.

first, who cares what age you are in relation to drinking? i dont mean underage, but i dont think it matters if youre 25, 27 or 32.... when is the apprpriate time to "stop" drinking? it shouldnt matter if you like to go out and have fun.... it matters how much you drink and how you handle your alcohol. you just need to learn how to drink responsibly. thats the key.

secondly, what was your reasoning to throw the the word "married" in there?? how in the world does that make a difference?

also, you said this womans story made you realize that you shouldnt "go all crazy and then drive"..... who said anything about going crazy and driving? not me.

and lastly, yes i edited it. big deal.

Posting about being drunk and then spinning off a post about drunk driving saying that you had just driven home...not smart on all accounts...especially the driving one.

Ideally NONE

but over the course of a few hours...maybe ONE, max TWO with some downtime to get behind the wheel.

drinking and driving has got to be one of the most selfish things you can do. My coworkers family was WIPED OUT on St. Patty's Day b/c of it.

tragic yes, and COMPLETELY avoidable. when you "decide" to get behind the wheel after drinking, your are making a decision that not only effects you, but anyone UNLUCKY enough to be on the road with you.

simple answer again is don't drink at all if you are going to drive.

ITA!!

this is what i usually do but occassionally i will have one while im eating

you know what Jes, you asked for it.
Posting about being drunk and then spinning off a post about drunk driving saying that you had just driven home...not smart on all accounts...especially the driving one.

yes, maybe i asked for it. that is fine, ican take it. its just that her post didnt make any sense in relation to me and what i was asking.

this thread was just out of curiosity. i wonder what most people consider too much to drive.

i saw this episode on the Tyra banks show the other day which dealt with this very issue. it was very interesting. they took a group of people. all drank different amounts and different types of drinks. they told them to stop after a certain amoutn of time and asked them if they felt ok to drive. one girl had SEVEN drinks and said she was fine.
they then gave them all breathalizers and those tests.

it was really interesting.

i always thought 1 hour for every drink. except when you are drinking in excessive amounts.
