My SIL never had a sitter and has relied on MIL far too much. MIL raised her kids and SIL needs to do the same, Just like I will.
Call me crazy, but this seems like it goes deeper than just "dinner". 
ETA: I just read some posts on page 4 and apparently that's the case. My bad. 
Also ETA that if anybody knows a sitter in the Huntington/Centerport area that is CPR cert and in college, then FM me.  (No teens!  )

when we go out, we usually go before 6. no we don't have kids yet, but we generally go to chili's or fridays type of places.
have you been out with the kid before? do you know that she will behave awfully or are you just annoyed that she will be there?
We all went on a cruise together in January, I would say 1/2 the time someone had to leave the table with him, hence the 5:30 reservations.
And yes, it goes much deeper.

My father and FIL would do whatever was necessary to celebrate his birthday with his kids and grandkids. I really don't see the problem, why should he have to stay home for his grandfather's birthday.
Because it's a fancy expensive restaurant!!!! It's not a diner or somewhere where it is the norm to bring a toddler! My FIL would love a night of just adults going out for dinner, everyone is certainly NOT the same.
If I heard we were going to an expensive restaurant for dinner, my first instinct would be, "Gee, I wanna have a good time without kids, I gotta find a sitter".
Children don't need to be banished to a diner or Chili's. I go to nice places with my kids and this is for your FIL, not for you, so IMO you should suck it up. If he is okay with going at 5:30 then you should do what the birthday boy wants. If this was your birthday dinner then it should be what suits you.

My mother had no parents to rely on when we were born, and she managed to go on vacations without us, dinners with friends, and work full time. Where there's a will, there's a way.
I was brought up in the same boat... my parents went out ALL the time without us (almost always without us) and left us with a babysitter who was NOT a family member, it was always a teenager from the neighborhood. In fact, I can't remember a single instance when a family member babysat us and my mom's brother lived a mile away with is family, so it's not like there was no one around.
I agree with the whole theory of there is a time and a place for children.. however for some people that time is always and that place is anywhere... parents and non-parents have to come to an agreement on what to do with the kids when plans are made.

Ok, I get where you are coming from with this. It is a vent, mostly about your SIL, and it goes much deeper than just this one incident.
If I were your SIL, I would try to get a sitter. If I couldn't get one, I would consider not going, because honestly, I would not enjoy myself as much at a fancy restaurant with my 2 yo in tow. A 6 mos old - totally different story - they are usually much more well-behaved. (But I don't know how old the grandchild is in this case) Anyway... I'm willing to bet that that's not what your FIL wants though, and if it's a choice between your SIL not being at his birthday dinner and having an early dinner instead with his grandchild there - he'd choose option B.
SO...now you have to ask yourself...is this really about your FIL or is it about you? I kind of agree with Michelle that if it's really about your FIL and he wants your SIL there (and that means baby too, and that means 5:30pm and HE'S okay with it)...then unfortunately, you kind of have to suck it up and be ok with it too.
Although, venting on LIF about it is totally understandable and allowed!

You are absolutely right, but AT LEAST SHE TRIED. Just as those who have the will to do something, when someone DOESN'T want to do something, they won't.
There's just no effort here, that's my point.
When MIL and FIL have to go home 1/2 hour after they arrived to my trim a tree cocktail party (the social event of the year!) so SIL can stay and get drunk and make a fool of herself, that's not cool. You're a mom, BE a mom.

Then you would also notice that in other countries, Europe especially, that kids are FAR BETTER BEHAVED and parents will tolerate much less, THAT'S why they go out with their parents.
For the record, children in Europe behave exactly the same as children in America. Its the Europe goggles making you see differently!

ALTHOUGH i dont think 5:30 is too early and i also dont see the problem with a child joining in on his grandpa's birthday dinner. even if it IS an expensive place.

my thoughts are all over the place .
On the one hand - it is FIL's birthday, so I would do what makes him happy.
but . . . . if this is a child that past history says can not behave at a fancy restaurant (as I gathered by the cruise comment) - why should the family (and other guests) be subjected to that? Where is the good time in that for anyone? Mom and Dad are going to be miserable and not enjoy their meal if their 2 year old is miserable.
also, when you say fancy, how fancy? Many fancy places will have no problem telling your SIL to please remove the child if he/she is disturbing other patrons.
I probably didn't help any . I think it's a tough situation all around.
