Poll - Do you hear emergency horns/sirens where you live on LI? Y or N
I often hear sirens/emergency horns/signals where I live on LI. I am trying to figure out if it's b/c I am close to the FD or just all LI towns with volunteer FD have them? I dont mean fire truck sirens, I mean loudspeaker sirens/horns.
Sorry the poll posted before I could add my NO option. So please feel free to add info if you wish or respond with no if thats your answer. Also if you live near a FD< can you list apx how many blocks away you are. Thanks!!!
ETA - By near a firehouse, I mean less than a half mile or so.

Sometimes I hear a really deep one, usually its on Sarurday. It sounds like a deeeeeeeeep tuba kinda noise....anyone know what that is?
I don't hear the other horns though, but I also don't live right near the fire dept.

What's your definition of being near a firehouse? What distance?
We're 1.5 miles from two firehouses and I would say we hear the sirens on occasion. It's not something I've taken note of or found to be disruptive or annoying.
When I lived with my parents, I used to hear the sirens there as well and they were no where near a fire house.

We live two blocks from the train station and less than 1/2 mile from one firehouse and less than 1 mile from another so it's audible but most of the time I don't notice.
It's still quieter than when we lived in Long Beach and dealt with traffic noises and the planes flying overhead! I didn't realize how much noise we lived with until we moved.

We are almost exactly 1.25 miles from the FD and hear it on occasion. But it's not so loud that it bothers me. Most of the time I don't even notice.

Well I currently live about 4 blocks from a firehouse, but I can't tell if that is where the siren/horn is coming from.
By near I guess I mean less than a half of a mile or so...

We're just over a half mile from one of our FD's stations. We hear the volunteer alarm go off. And since we have a hydrant in front of out house every so often trucks will be in front of our house getting ready in case they need the hoses for a call.

Ya know... I can't even recall if I hear them or not. Growing up, we always heard them and we were about 3 miles or so from the fire house. Maybe I got so used to it that I don't even hear it anymore.

this was exactly my situation when i lived in Williston park...The sirens woke me up at night. I was 3 blocks from the WP FD, and about 5-6 blocks from the Mineola FD in the other direction and 2 blocks from the LIRR.
Now I dont live that close to a FD BUT I am pretty close to the hospital so i hear the helicopters

When I did, yes. And I was at least a mile or two away.
For my father's and my husband's firehouse, there is a 6 or 6:30 pm nightly radio test and it goes off for that.
Try living with the radio in the house for all your life. It actually becomes so natural to wake up to sirens. LOL.

You might be hearing the fog horn.
My parents live about a half mile from a fire station and you can hear the alarm go off when there is a fire. sometimes you can hear the next town's go off (that station is about 2.5 miles away). it all depends on the winds that day.

I thought you were supposed to hear them...so that volunteers could get to the station. Also, on snow days, they set the sirens off at 6. We also have a 12 noon siren.
It's probably antiquated now with bbepers/cells/etc, but it's the system set up.

We're 4 blocks from the firehouse and I've never heard the siren go off. I might hear some distant fire trucks, but nothing intrusive. I grew up on the same block as a large firehouse and it never bothered us at all. Plus you get a break on your homeowner's ins. if you live close enough to one.

Where do you live ? I know that the Nassau County Jail siren has a test on Saturday's at 2pm. If you are in the Salisbury/Levittown/East Meadow/South Hicksville area you will be able to hear it.
It's not really low where I am (Salisbury) but it only goes off on Saturday's at 2pm, that's why I suggested it.
For the OP - yes, I hear the FD "stuff" go off. doesn't bother me though. we're about 1/2 -1 mile away from the closest FD

There are no 'blocks' in the area between myself and the firehouse. But it's about 2000 feet with trees, one block of houses, and then one story commercial properties in between. I say that because tall buildings and leafed out trees can deaden the sound. In winter it's the loudest but it's not the kind of thing that hurts my ears.
It used to suck when we were going to sleep, still semi-awake and it would go off and I'd be jarred back awake. But either it hasn't happened or I just don't notice anymore.
My next door neighbor his a volunteer with the FD so I'd hear the roooOOOOOOOOOO! of the siren, then I'd hear running, his car door slam, start, and him vroom down the block. Within a couple of minutes I would hear the sirens of the firetrucks and whatnot.
It sounds silly, but coming from a volunteer background, I kind of like it.

I hear the horns/sirens and I live about a mile and a half away. I only hear it if it's quiet in the house or I'm outside and it's not bothersome

Re: Poll - Do you hear emergency horns/sirens where you live on LI? Y or N
coming from a huge family of vol ff's there are purposes for those alarms beyond alerting the fire fighters.. i do not remember exactly what but i do remember ours making a big deal because they had to get an even louder one when they replaced theirs...
hicksville has more of a deep horn that goes on and off like a tuba...

Re: Poll - Do you hear emergency horns/sirens where you live on LI? Y or N
I live less than a 1/2 mile from my DHs firehouse and can hear the siren. On a good day I can hear the siren of the FD in our neighboring town. What you are describing (that deep tuba sound) is definitely the fire siren going off.
Like a PP said, when you live with the pager they carry, you don't even hear the siren anymore. My DHs pager went off 6 times the other night while I was trying to sleep. I was ready to throw the thing.
