All I got from this thread is that the first "potentially related topic" below, is pretty ironic.

Re: The Debate

Since he intermingles his personal dealings, with his corporate dealings, with his "foundation" dealings, he has been charged with several illegal tax issues, is being investigated for more illegal tax issues, and used political favors and/or bribes to illegally get around other taxes.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/17/us/politics/trump-chris-christie-casinos.html

By the time Chris Christie became governor of New Jersey, the state’s auditors and lawyers had been battling for several years to collect long-overdue taxes owed by the casinos founded by his friend Donald J. Trump.

The total, with interest, had grown to almost $30 million. The state had doggedly pursued the matter through two of the casinos’ bankruptcy cases and even accused the company led by Mr. Trump of filing false reports with state casino regulators about the amount of taxes it had paid.

But the year after Governor Christie, a Republican, took office, the tone of the litigation shifted. The state entertained settlement offers. And in December 2011, after six years in court, the state agreed to accept just $5 million, roughly 17 cents on the dollar of what auditors said the casinos owed.

Tax authorities sometimes settle for lesser amounts to avoid the costs and risks of further litigation, legal experts said, but the steep discount granted to the Trump casinos and the relationship between the two men raise inevitable questions about special treatment.

After the Trump casinos filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004 for the third time, state officials noticed the company had not been filling out the required schedule for the minimum tax assessment. The Trump casinos had reported losing money and paid a little more than $600,000 in state income taxes in 2002, and only $1,500 in 2003. State auditors determined that the Trump casinos should have paid $8.8 million in alternative minimum taxes for those two years, according to court records.

In February 2007, Heather Lynn Anderson, a deputy attorney general who specializes in tax cases, filed papers in court saying auditors had discovered discrepancies that raised “numerous additional questions regarding the accuracy” of the Trump casinos’ tax returns. The company had reported lower revenue figures on its tax returns, for example, than on filings with the State Casino Control Commission. Ms. Anderson also wrote that Mr. Trump’s flagship casino, the Taj Mahal, had reported to the casino commission that it paid $2.2 million in alternative minimum assessment tax in 2003, which was not true. The company had paid only $500 in income taxes.

The Trump casinos did agree to pay more than $1 million in other taxes that the state sought in the bankruptcy cases.

Those aren't legal loopholes, those are misreporting and misfilings....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-used-258000-from-his-charity-to-settle-legal-problems/2016/09/20/adc88f9c-7d11-11e6-ac8e-cf8e0dd91dc7_story.html

Donald Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his charitable foundation to settle lawsuits that involved the billionaire’s for-profit businesses, according to interviews and a review of legal documents.

Those cases, which together used $258,000 from Trump’s charity, were among four newly documented expenditures in which Trump may have violated laws against “self-dealing” — which prohibit nonprofit leaders from using charity money to benefit themselves or their businesses.

The fact that he OR any corporation can get away with paying ZERO taxes shows just how broken our system is. Period.

I agree - but this is not his fault. If you want to place blame, it belongs with the politicians. He is not a politician but Hilary is. Maybe you don't like the way he brags about it or is smug but he has nothing to do with creating the tax code.

The fact of the matter is that Trump is a tax evader. He may technically not be doing anything illegal but he will continue to not pay taxes. If he gets elected he doesn't plan to fix this broken system or close the loopholes because it benefits him and his family. His economic policy will even be more advantageous to the wealthy with more tax breaks. To Trump, the average American is stupid for actually paying taxes.

Evading is not really the right word. If you want to say he is taking advantage of every loophole he can, and maybe that is slimy, I could potentially agree. But evading implies that he is avoiding paying taxes that he is obligated to pay.

Exactly. And if you think the 100s of other politicians elected in this country don't do the same you are sadly mistaken. He is taking advantage of the loopholes politicans like HRC created. People are so blinded by his crassness that they are forgetting that HRC is herself rich and unlike Trump her Daddy didn't hand her millions yet still has managed to amass a small fortune while working for the "public" 30+ years.

You're going to tell me all that $$ was accumulated to help the poor??? She's using it for herself and her family just like he is so what's the difference?

Either way we are freakin screwed. Out of all the people in this country and we came up with these two as nominees?? Really America??

So what did we learn here? The people on LIF who support Clinton say she did great. The people who love Trump say he was amazing. Those of us (like me) who don't like either candidate think neither of them did that well. It's very true that we all see what we want to see...

Good point. It seems like the supporters of HRC, she can do no wrong in their book. They don't discuss the reasons why she us untrustworthy.

To NOT support Trump does NOT mean you "love" HRC or that you agree with the things that she's done. A vote for HRC is simply one less vote for Trump who most people find to be completely and utterly ill equipped to run a nation.

I think most every politician is corrupt and untrustworthy but Trump and his lack of understanding about our government and economic and foreign policy is just so frightening that HRC, by default, becomes the better choice.

This, exactly.

He cannot become the leader of our country, we'll be the laughing stock of the entire world, and most probably end up in WWIII!

The biggest thing that resonated with me last night was that this man, who has zero understanding that words actually do mean something and you can't just say 'i didnt' say that' when you're on video saying all those things.. that he would actually have the power to start a nuclear war/drop a bomb on someone is insane to me.

It's also very possible that after each ( or at least some) of the audits, he settled with the IRS and made payments that were actually owed - that Trump's use of all of the loopholes wasn't always justified. Not necessarily criminal penalties, but taxes that were found to be owed. Something we'll never know because he won't release the info.

If he didn't do anything illegal then I don't think it's something you should be concerned with. It is clear that you don't have any kind of background in tax accounting especially when it comes to the wealthy. And the average American would have absolutely no idea what they are looking at. I was a CPA and I would have no idea where to even start with his return. I wouldn't even attempt to do my own tax return and it's a hell of a lot less complicated than his! This isn't a 1040EZ we are talking about.

Only because of your condescension, I have to ask -

You were a CPA but you won't attempt to do your own tax return? Huh?

For someone with his portfolio, I'm sure he's just netting his losses against his gains. It's still nothing to mock America about but it's something that is very common in the tax world. (Coming from an accountant who has dealt with high net-worth individuals)

He actually said he would let China invade North Korea!

World leaders are genuinely concerned about this election. So, no, this is not a lesser of two evils situation. It is one person who hasn't the faintest idea what comes with the job of being president, and another who is immensely qualified, but rubs you the wrong way. How this is even a choice boggles my mind.

Why do people hate HRC so much? She was cleared of Benghazi, she owned up to the email-gate and has taken responsibility. How tdoes his is even compare to Trump's deficiencies?

Doesn't Donald manufacture in Mexico and China? How can he say this stuff about companies that send jobs overseas when that's exactly what he does???

I wondered the same.

He does manufacture here and overseas. But as any business man would do, if it's cheaper overseas, it pays to do it there. I do believe though he will do what he can do so we can manufacture more here.

I wonder if this debate will move the needle in either direction.

Is this a surprise though? All politicians are.

That being said, and I do NOT love HRC, being rehearsed, answering the questions, and remaining calm plays so much better than a rambling, misinformed hothead.

Exactly. Who gives a $h*t if she was "coached"?

Being President is a big job. Why do we want someone who is not prepared? Oh that's right- he speaks his mind and says what people are thinking. Just the type of person we need for President. Chat Icon

That's how I feel. I 'd rather someone who is coached, trained, and prepared for the job.

We do NOT need a leader who runs off at the mouth, says whatever he wants however he wants, slings insults around, and can't even conduct himself with a modicum of maturity. Truly, he sounded like a little kid constantly butting into an adult conversation so he could just talk about himself and his mindless ramblings. That isn't the type of person who should be leading a country.

Ok then. To be fair, why do we care about his tax returns?

How come we don't care about the 33k emails that were suddenly deleted once asked to turn them over? ?
Among other reasons (too many to list) why I don't trust HRC.

How can you manage being President, since it's a big job, when you can't even manage a computer??

I'm not sure what your statement/question has to do with what I said about him being a bumbling moron.

I'm also not sure why the ONLY thing Trump supporters seem to care about are these emails. It's like they have NOTHING else to comment on. Ever.

I'm also astounded that anyone can sit back after the debate last night and still think this man is fit to be a President.

-Emails
-Benghazi
-Her lies
-Her comments about super predators
-The Hillary advisors that are dead
-The fact that the Clintons are multi millionaires just like trump and won't do speaking engagements that cost a certain amount.

There's a a lot more. Not to mention I can't respect a woman who is still with her husband after all the cheating. And she claims to be a feminist? She is FOS on so many levels.

He didn't stay on topic, he didn't answer the questions that were asked, he didn't even follow the rules of the debate and went on to interrupt her CONSTANTLY as well as cut off and ignore the moderator. He was a train wreck of EPIC proportions last night. He showed everyone just how ill equipped he is to lead a country, he couldn't even form a well thought out, intelligent sentence.

The point is that he is NOT cheating the system. What he is doing is completely within the confines of a very broken system. He is pointing that out. It does make him smart and it makes the people that designed the system not smart. Perhaps if you were an accountant and more versed in the tax code for the wealthy you would understand how broken the system really is. But to just say he is "cheating" because he isn't paying taxes is entirely inaccurate. He is not doing anything illegal.

Bingo.

And he is open about everything.

Hillary is so full of crap. And she is in the top 1%. She doesn't care about the middle class. I really believe Trump does. He seems more approachable as a person that she does. She has a stick up her asssss.

Thank you . Right on point. But people will still vote for her.

Yep, because he's a moron.

Typical Hillary supporter response. Chat Icon Try to back it up with something constructive.

She comes off as too fake, fabricated and rehearsed. Every response sounds like it's from a Miss USA pageant interview.

I read somewhere that she was coached

Trump supporters are so funny. Chat Icon

I don't have to back up anything, I simply won't cast a vote (nor will many Americans) for an imbecile who has no understanding of government, politics, and policy. The end.

And so are Hillary supporters. She is a shady, lying, snake of woman. I could never vote for her. And from the looks of it, Trump has a good shot. And that bothers you Clinton supporters, huh? You all act like whiney little babies because of it. It's actually comical to watch. Chat Icon

I don't know how anyone can really support either one of them.

She is horrid and she will ruin this country even more than it has already been ruined. And I did not think she did well last night at all.

He is a moron and we will probably get nuked within a year of him taking office.

Honestly we are all screwed no matter what. I think it's sad that we are sitting here debating a debate than trying to move elsewhere! That's what the truly smart Americans are doing right now.

This word for word. I'm truly scared for our country. Like I keep saying HC does NOT have my vote NOR will she ever have my vote.
And trump- I'm not convinced I can pull the lever for him either. I really don't know what to do.

But I will never say HC wiped the floor last night or that she's our best choice bc I believe that to be furtherest from the truth.
