need MAJOR opinions!! OMG.. UPDATE!!!

ok, i hope its appropriate to post this here.. while im not even PG yet, or have anything to do with TTC in a way..but here it goes.......

my sister went to her OB yesterday for her annual and decided at the end of the appt to ask her doctor about me.

(quick backround story)
My sister has a miscarriage at 16 weeks
later diagnosed with "weakened cervix"
I also have a miscarriage at 16 weeks about a month ago..

ANYWAY, she tells the doc about me and he literally DROPS the pen he was holding and puts his hands over his face in disbelief.. he was like... her doctor is giving her a cerclage for the next time right??? and my sister had told him that my doctor was very hesitant about doing it.. so he then tells her that I NEED IT!! NO QUESTIONS!
he was so sad that this happened to the both of us, and thinks its hereditary.. he also wants to see me for a consult and look over both of our records and notes. he then said he would call my doctor with the information...

NOW... i have NO problems switching doctors.. it actually would make me feel MUCH more comfortable. especially that he performed the surgery on my sister 2x. so just knowing that alone puts me at ease..
the problem is i live 45 minutes away Chat Icon do you think its worth it?

******UPDATE*********

ok so i called my doctors office earlier to get copies of my records and i get a phone call about a half hour ago from my doctor.. he tells me that he does not understand why i am going to get a 2nd opinion.. so i basically told him i was going to my sisters doctor and he will be comparing records to see if we have similar issues and what not... he then tells me....... brace yourself....
" i will tell you right now that you have nothing similar in common "
Chat Icon Chat Icon i was FLOORED!! couldnt believe what he said! i guess i have my answer now ladies...

on a positive note, my records are ready , picking them up after work and made an appt already for tomorrow morning.!! they fit me in!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly mama.....I do think it's worth the drive! And hunny, maybe you don't need that particular doctor your sister is seeing but you need another one. Girl, you have been on the fence about this doctors reliability since you had you m/c and I think it's time to make a move. This is all just my opinion and what I would do. Finding a comfortable doctor is stressful enough....I'd go on your sisters referal and at least give it a shot!

I would absolutely switch doctors - I would imagine most doctors will agree you need a cerclage and that this was not just a coincidence so if you prefer to stay closer to home, maybe just find someone else in your area? Chat Icon

thanks so much Stacy,
yea i feel like its worth it too , because he knows everything about my sister , and it might help for me as well.
he does surgeries often, not like my OB.. and yes , i know i have been crazy about the doctors since the MC...

Deanna, if your doctor isn't "serious" about the cerclage and will do it only because you "pushed" him.. I would switch doctors ASAP and go to him for a consultation. It really touched me when you said how sad he was when he heard what happened to you. Unfortunately, its hard to find doctors like that who really care and listen to their patients. If 45 minutes is too far for you, at least see if he can recommend someone closer to you. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sounds like your sister's doctor is def. on the ball and interested in giving you the appropriate care you need - plus, you already have a good reference if your sister likes him so I think a 45-minute drive is worth it. It also depends on his hours/your work schedule sometimes too - if it's easy for you to make the time to get there then def. go for it! That peace of mind is totally worth it! Chat Icon
Also, is he associated with a hospital you would be comfortable delivering at?

I would switch, yes. Most of my doctors are a pretty far drive for me. I have a bunch in my area to choose from too. The fact too that your sister goes to him is a huge recommendation, at least it would be for me.

thank you!
yea i was extremely touched by how sympathedic he was to me and i was not even there nor do i know him!!!
my sister said that when she had her MC he had tears when she lost her baby and said he will do EVERYTHING to make sure she goes full term and she did !! 2 more times!!
so basically it was unreal what she was telling me.. maybe this is my answer!

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

I would definately switch! Everything you have been through, a further drive is the least important factor. It seems your sisters doctor is very caring to want to see you....like others said, your sister is the best source of advice, and she likes him...That would be enough persuasion for me

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

Sweetie, I definitely think it's worth the drive. He knows your sister's history and I think he'll be more open to listening to you regarding your concerns, etc. I would go for it. Even for a consult, etc. And then maybe he can recommend someone closer to you for you to see on a regular basis.

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

I would go for the consult to meet him at least. But I would also probably be changing doctors to him...the 45 minutes would be worth my peace of mind.

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

My ob/gyn moved right before I got pregnant - about 35 minutes from home, but I stuck with him because I just adored him that much. And let me tell you, I'm SO glad I did because I ended up having complications with labor, my daughter's heartrate dropped, and they had to rush me into an emergency c-section. I would have FREAKED if I was with any other doctor.

I did the trek back and forth for my doctor visits, and it was ok. A pain, but ok. And keep in mind, most women, for their first, take a LONG time with labor, so it's unlikely you will be rushing to get to the hospital.

I say go for it!

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

It wouldn't even be a question in my mind. I would definitely go to him for a consult, and if you find the drive to too much, maybe he can recommend a doctor closer to you.

After all the things you have said about your ob/gyn I wouldn't put any trust in him at all. It should have been his suggestion, not yours to do a cerclage next time you get pregnant. He also should have done testing to investigate why you lost the baby. At 16 weeks a miscarrige is not just something that "happens." I would make an appointment with your sister's doctor ASAP.Chat Icon

I would definitely switch doctors. Your sister's doctor actually sounds like he cares and will look out for the best for you. That counts for a lot.

I completely agree. When I was in the hospital, my doctors were so open and honest in discussing a plan for when I got pregnant again...no question they would put in a cerclage at 12 weeks and place me on bedrest. One of the doctors in the practice was also very compassionate and cried along with me as I was trying to process what was happening with my babies....

Re: need MAJOR opinions!! please

i think you have your answer deanna - how nice that your sister's doc was so concerned! for me, 45 minutes is TOTALLY worth peace of mind, knowing that a dr cares so much and is so on the ball, willing to do what is right by you.

best of luck!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I absolutely agree with every single person. 45 mins for peace of mind and answers/resolutions is totally worth it. It's so hard to find caring, considerate doctors. Go for it. This is a sign for sure.

Best of luck..keep us in the loop. When are you gonna go?
