Easing restrictions?
Confirmation bias. I think people on both sides will look for evidence that supports their belief or desire. And we all know, if you look hard enough, you will always find some journalist that agrees with you. TBH, I am not sure where I stand on Covid anymore.
I do find it VERY interesting that NY started to life stay at home orders on May 15th, and we have not had any significant upticks. Anytime we see a rise (4th of July party in Suffolk, kids in Nassau coming home from sleepaway camp with Covid, clusters in Brooklyn), they are all contained before it gets out of control. All of those outbreaks in day camps in other states, never happened here. The camp in Suffolk that had a few counselors test positive, nothing more ever came of that. I truly believe it is because NY is now one of the safest places to be right now in terms of COVID infection rate.
On the other side, people need to understand that could change. In an instant. It could happen when schools reopen, or when NYC allows indoor dining, or in November when flu season begins in full force...we just don't know. I do not think it is wise to deny the high likelihood of a second wave. But I also do not think it is wise to not cautiously move forward with things like school re openings, because if not now, when? We were at .7% positive today. It won't get better than that.
There will be a second wave, we will most likely have stay at home orders reinstated at some point this winter, but for now, let's move forward as cautiously as we can, and taste a little bit of normal.
Oh, and I do believe masks are here to stay. I wouldn't be surprised if five years from now, stores are still mandating them.

I hope that you’re right.
And I don’t agree with other posters saying that there will be a huge spike because of schools. My district is being meticulous, and are all surrounding districts. I am 100% confident in their plan.
It’s a shame that southern states and universities are not taking this seriously, but we’re talking about adults refusing to wears masks and SD. It’s stupid and irresponsible, but it’s not a reflection of what NY is doing. And even still we are seeing a decline in cases overall....even a decline in cases in those states.
I agree with you, but I think a lot of people just like to be negative.

I think we are doomed if we spike when schools open if everything follows the districts guidelines - because it shows that use of PPE and social distancing inside don't work. At all... And especially with the kids dealing with the plexiglass barriers.
Exactly. That's what I'm not understanding.
Then again indoor dining, opening malls etc was supposed to cause spikes too so.....
...and let's not forget all the graduation parties, holidays, etc. that everyone said will make it spike. They were even saying outdoor dining would spike it. I look at the numbers for Suffolk County on their government page every single day. There has never been a spike.
Don’t forget everyone said the same about the spikes in CA, FL and AZ and TX. When people questioned why the death rate was still so low they said “just wait the huge death spikes are coming.” But the number of cases have already dropped and they never saw the 800/day deaths NY did.
ETA: But don’t listen to me, I’m a science denyer.
In all the states you mentioned except Arizona deaths have increased, in some cases significantly, since mid July.

I'm not sure what the recent snarky posts are about but people here, particularly the cautious people, seem pretty satisfied with NY's slow open.
I haven't read any complaining about outdoor dining, malls, etc. Everyone seems ready for most kids' sports.
I thought we pretty much all or at least the large majority acknowledged that NY is in a different category.
Most of the negative chatter seems sparked by news stories of stupid shit happening in other states.
I'm not surprised we don't have much in the way of spikes here because we did it right.
Yes, I think we'll see an increase when school starts, but I also feel a little better hearing that most districts have a remote option at the elementary level because then there are less kids in class and less spread.

I truly think part of the reason New York has done so well recently is because FAR MORE people had the virus already than we know. I think we are closer to herd immunity here than we know. Testing was not readily available to people until the last couple of months so between January - May, I believe a ton of people had it and just were asymptomatic or so mild that they didn't realize that is what it was. It has to be - think about how ferociously contagious it is and how thousands of people were testing positive daily - and those were only the people able to get a test!
That is not to say that out-of-state tourists can bring it back to New York but....I don't know how many people are flocking to New York City right now, which is pretty much the worst place in the world to be right now.
On the subject of masks, IF we have a vaccine like they keep promising, then I don't see why we would still have to wear them. If we have to wear them for years to come then I'm hanging it all up and going off the grid forever.

ITA. Our numbers were insane even with fewer tests. It had spread here before we shut down.

Peronally, I dont think restrictions will ease until infection rates drop even more. Yes the rates are low right now but NY state is still posting an average of 500-800 residents testing positive daily. Today, Nassau and Suffolk posted 97 residents as positive. Who are these 97 people? NY health officials arent releasing which zip codes they come from, their ages nor occupations. Tomorrow, there will be another 60-100 residents testing positive, for all I know 1 of those individuals could be standing right behind me on line at my local Stop n Shop. This is why masks are still necessary and important. I just hope the country will get control over this virus in the next few months as testing protocols improve because NO ONE wants to get used to wearing masks for another year or more.

I don’t know how much lower infection rates can realistically get, even with a vaccine. 97 people out of almost 3 million is pretty manageable.

The reason why infection rate is low is because of the precautions everyone is taking. If we went back to normal, the number of cases would increase.
