Easing restrictions?

Has cuomo mentioned when he will ease restrictions?

With cooler weather on the horizon, I was just curious if he had mentioned at what point he will allow restaurants to increase their capacity and other indoor venues.

I’m trying to be positive that there will be a small uptick when schools and colleges open, but if we stay way under 5% is he going to allow us to slowly get back to the “old normal”? Is it written anywhere? Is there a plan? Or are we going blindly?

I see so many who no longer get the $600 and they can’t go back because of restrictions. I’m talking people who were making way more than they were on unemployment. My friend is a physical therapist and bc of restrictions they can only have a certain amount of people in the office so she’s working two days a week and barely making ends meet. It’s sad. And she keeps saying she doesn’t know when it will change.

Re: Easing restrictions?

Well he did allow gyms to open so it's something.
I think he's going on a case by case- one thing at a time. But no timeline like we had with the phases.
Now it's just one offs

There has been no mention.

I doubt anything will happen further until after Election Day at this point since he just announced the combo of our fall Covid outbreak and flu season will be horrible (or something to that extent).

I’m hoping all the sanitizing and mask wearing lessens flu season.

So basically we are going blindly? I feel like if he would give us some hope and benchmarks to meet people would be more diligent Following guidelines.

If he would say for example, once schools are open for a month and the rate stays under 5% the following restrictions will change Or be lifted .....

I feel like a lot of people have become lax on following guidelines bc there is no plan (at least that I know of, hence One of the reason for the post)

I agree with you completely... And I think some restrictions should definitely be eased (and thought some restrictions could have been eased earlier).

Maybe we will find out the next step in his book Chat Icon

Easing restrictions?

Until the entire country gets this under control, restrictions should not be eased. Other countries like New Zealand have been able to return to "normal" because they got it under control. We do not have this under control.

Agreed. I think he stopped easing up when cases started to rise across the country. Indoor activities seem to be a trigger in other states. Travel is a problem too. My guess is that he is worried what happened in other states will happen here. I’m curious what happen in October and November after school opens. But then we approach flu season which will be tricky. I feel for the businesses suffering. On the hand, we don’t want to see a major increase in cases. So people need to continue with precautions. Even New Jersey is seeing an increase in cases they think from young people socializing.

Re: Easing restrictions?

What I want to know is -what does flu season have to do with anything?
It's 2 different viruses.
Having the flu doesn't make you have Covid.
What is the connection?

The flu puts stress on the healthcare system every fall-spring. Covid will obviously put additional stress.

I am hoping masks, social distancing, and better hygiene reduces the spread of all illnesses this year.

Easing restrictions?

I doubt we will see significant changes until schools open. That honestly is the next HUGE hurdle.

As far as what is a reasonable restriction vs unreasonable, I have no clue.

what I do know is a lot of people are not following the 2 week quarantine order. I've heard from multiple friends that people are having family gathers and family vacations with people flying in/driving from other states and not quarantining at all.

I've also been in many restaurants and stores where staff and customers are not following masking procedures.

I can't wait for this to be over and not a worry anymore, but I fear we're going to have a large outbreak again after schools open.

I just feel like if there was an end in sight people would follow things better. Right now everyone is so over it and there is no end in sight.

If he had benchmarks or communicated what was next people would probably follow guidelines better. If I knew in 3 weeks if we keep the infection rate down than we can open xy and z and capacity for a and b will go up to 50%.....you bet I’m following those guidelines a lot better. Right now there is no incentive, just doom and gloom of a second wave and flu season.

I hate to be blunt, but it doesn't matter if most people are "over it". This virus is far from over.

I’m not disagreeing. But today on the news they were talking about “coronavirus fatigue”. People have done everything they were told. The curve is beyond flattened and yet there is no end in sight. Even people who were strict are loosening up.

What was crazy to me was on cnn this morning they were talking about how people aren’t getting as many tests and they were making it like it was a bad thing, I was hoping it meant that maybe things are getting better. Just trying to be optimistic

Less testing is an issue. Testing in NY has remained stable, but hot spot areas have had a huge drop off in testing.

Why though?
Because people aren't sick?
I wouldn't just go get a test today. I'm feeling fine.
So what is the reason for the drop off in teting?

I hope that you’re right.

And I don’t agree with other posters saying that there will be a huge spike because of schools. My district is being meticulous, and are all surrounding districts. I am 100% confident in their plan.

It’s a shame that southern states and universities are not taking this seriously, but we’re talking about adults refusing to wears masks and SD. It’s stupid and irresponsible, but it’s not a reflection of what NY is doing. And even still we are seeing a decline in cases overall....even a decline in cases in those states.

In hot spots, testing is down because they do not have enough tests. It is not because people are not getting sick.

I agree with you, but I think a lot of people just like to be negative.
Schools will open and we'll spike!
Second wave!
But the flu season!
I just go about my life and try to avoid getting sick like I've always done with common sense measures.
Whatever will be, will be.
The fear and paranoia doesn't help anything. It's just exhausting though mentally

I think we are doomed if we spike when schools open if everything follows the districts guidelines - because it shows that use of PPE and social distancing inside don't work. At all... And especially with the kids dealing with the plexiglass barriers.

Exactly. That's what I'm not understanding.
Then again indoor dining, opening malls etc was supposed to cause spikes too so.....

Don’t forget everyone said the same about the spikes in CA, FL and AZ and TX. When people questioned why the death rate was still so low they said “just wait the huge death spikes are coming.” But the number of cases have already dropped and they never saw the 800/day deaths NY did.

ETA: But don’t listen to me, I’m a science denyer.

My guess is that he wants to see how the reopening of schools goes; I suspect if it goes well, we will start hearing about the easing of other restrictions.

Then again indoor dining, opening malls etc was supposed to cause spikes too so.....

...and let's not forget all the graduation parties, holidays, etc. that everyone said will make it spike. They were even saying outdoor dining would spike it. I look at the numbers for Suffolk County on their government page every single day. There has never been a spike.

Yet people don't want to hear that. Isn't that "denying science "? Those numbers are pretty "scientific " no??

Nope, they’d call it “anectodal evidence”, roll their eyes and continue to look for things to worry about.

Oh and don’t forget all the daycares, camps, care centers that DID NOT require masks. I guess alllll these things are not enough good indications.
