What are some restrictions for Adoption?
Is there anything that disqualifies you as being an adoptive parent? I mean, obvious stuff, like if you are unstable....that I know. But what are some other things, I wonder?

I've just started investigating but I'm finding that a lot of agencies want couples married at least 2 years and between 25-45 years of age.
I'm also noticing that a lot will not adopt to single men but single women are ok.

I believe health of the parents is a factor as well but I'm not entirely sure.

Just adding my 2 cents....my Aunt is 58 and my Uncle is 60. Their kids are: 5, 13, 18, 27, 38 and 38. They are adopting a 14 year old now. The 5 year old and 13 year old were both adopted too.

I should have stated that my stats were for domestic adoption through agencies, I haven't begun investigating international yet...

There was one agency that told me to come back after being married 2 years AND to get rid of ALL my debt...no credit card debt whatsoever.....needless to say, we moved on.

Someone I work with went through an agency for a foreign adoption. It was interesting to see that each country had their own restrictions. Some of the things that were listed were age ranges, being overweight, being single or gay.
For example, this person was looking first at Korea and they would not let someone who was a certain amount overweight to adopt. China would not allow gays or lesbians to adopt. Some of the central American countries had an age restriction. If you were older than a certain age, you couldn't adopt an infant, but you could adopt an older child. The agency stated that it was the foreign country that gave them the restrictions and they simply followed them.

I never heard about the weight restriction, but there are other restrictions. We have one bedroom in our home (had 2 but made one large one) and we have a sun room... We were asked where our child would sleep and I explained the sunroom until the 2nd story was completed (we haven't even started)...they were fine w/ that....they were not concerned that the child did not have it's own bedroom, but we were required to be free of debt....Interesting, huh?

The restrictions really depend on where you are adopting from and what agency you choose.
Most of the time there are age restrictions, restrictions on how much money you must make, your health (physical as well as mental), how long you've been married ect.
For my adoption in China, we had to be over 30, married at least one year, made a salary over $30,000 and be of good physical and mental health. Also during our homestudy they had to check out where we were living and we had to have a seperate room for the baby.
Other agencies asked for all of the above and a few wanted weight restrictions (which ****** me off) and would only take certain religions or were requiring at least 2 years of marraige.

We had a mini homestudy this summer b/c we were hosting 2 girls. We also obtained a child abuse clearance and another clearance from the police dept. I cleaned like the white tornado the day before and she just wanted to see where the girls were going to sleep. Then the girls Ukrainian nanny and 2 interpeturer came to our home one night to attend a lobster bake and the one woman loved our home--they even brought us gifts. We had taken them all out to dinner the day before ($chaching$$$).....and we were told that some of the homes they go into a pigstys--

Single men would find it most difficult to adopt a child. Openly gay couples will also find it hard to do get approved for International Adoption.
When you find the right agency and the right country you will just have it all work out.

If you are looking for domestic adoption than restrictions are only part of the issue as you need to be a very desirable couple in order to get chosen by a birth mother.
Most agencies are just looking for stable, welcoming homes with either a single women or married couple.Finances are mainly that you need to be able to support a child, or the amount of child you will have after the adoption as well as the adoption costs. I have not seen anyone asked to be totally debt free like the others on here have.
Some countries do have age restrictions for under 12 month babies. But most will allow older parents to adopt older children.

Aside from the salary, debt, age and weight restrictions, the Korean agency we may go through requires that neither person has ever had counseling!
