To all non-state people,

We know you don't understand. Generally, we don't try to explain. Unless you are a Buckeye or Fighting Irish, you probably don't get how an institution embeds itself in a student's life. And that is fine.

Did you write this?

Do you understand how this makes YOU sound by even quoting this?

I could not care less - I don't know you IRL - but you are coming across as someone who thinks that it is OKAY to grieve for GROWN MEN LOSING THEIR JOBS when they helped PERPETRATE and HIDE the most HEINOUS crime I can think of in recent history.

IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT IT HAPPENED AT A STUPID BLEEPING STATE COLLEGE.

People who subscribe to this line of thinking make me SICK SICK SICK.

Re: Did we discuss the Penn State scandal? (includes Grand Jury Report)

I haven't commented on this thread before now because I almost went to Penn State and have been a huge huge fan since I was 14. I was devastated to find out that JoePa had a roll in this. The rioting and mourning that is going on for a man who KNEW that LITTLE BOYS WERE BEING RAPED is just mind-blowing to me and makes so SO GODD*MN angry.

no i didn't write it.
i don't care how i come across to you, someone i'll never know in real life and exist to me only through the internet.
i didn't say he shouldn't have lost his job. does it suck that someone with such a long history at the school had to go this way? yes, of course. but i didn't say it shouldn't have happened.
i didn't say the crime wasn't heinous.
i didn't say the coverup wasn't heinous.

i did say that i'm upset, saddened, disgusted, in disbelief.
i did say that i still love my alma mater - a school made up of hundreds of thousands of other people who had nothing to do with these crimes, who are now confused, who are now facing public ridicule for merely attending the school.

Okay THAT I can understand. It's just that anything that comes off as remotely sympathetic for JoePa or anyone who knew about this gets me extremely heated. And I don't care who ate ice cream with him where. He did not prevent a horrible monster from raping little boys even after he KNEW about it. NO ONE went to the police. He deserves NO ONE'S sympathy - I don't think he should be singled out at all but I don't give him any kind of a pass because he didn't see it with his own eyes or because he is part of a stupid institution.

I feel for anyone who says they attend or attended PSU and then faces ridicule.

However, I don't think that's the case. I think they are only facing ridicule if they appear as if they are more concerned over their school's rep rather than the victims, or seem more upset over their beloved FB coach getting the axe. That's when things get a bit hairy.

But, it's always like this in these type of situations. Whenever we identify ourselves with something (be it a career, a company, a school, etc) and then a great travesty such as this occurs, we take it to heart. We feel confused and try to defend it, all the while are disgusted with it.

I think a lot of people are in shock and confused and it's probably coming out wrong. At least, that's how I like to think.

This is about boys being molested. PERIOD. I really wish people who went or are going would stop making about them. I don't care who attended the school and who still is. I do care that people are almost acting like they are the victims here. The kids that go to the school look like idiots protesting the coaches removal. He helped and turned a blind eye to hurting young boys. I am sure he has done good in his life. At this point, it really doesn't do much good to the 9 boys (so far) that could have had a different life.

There is no defending this at all. There is no logic in the world that can make defending this right. If you know someone is hurting children and you do NOTHING about it then you are JUST AS DISGUSTING. This goes for the cops who did nothing, the other staffers, whoever, I don't give a rats a$$, they should all rot in Hell.

A very frightening aspect is the fact that many associated with that area/school did nothing

Exactly. All of them. I don't care how many ice cream cones they bought for kids. I hope they rot in jail cells.

We know you don't understand. Generally, we don't try to explain. Unless you are a Buckeye or Fighting Irish, you probably don't get how an institution embeds itself in a student's life. And that is fine.
But right now, we want you to know this:

We are distraught and truly sickened by this horror perpetrated on young victims by one who represented the Blue and White, and perpetuated by others at the University. We aren't blind followers who drink Blue Kool-Aid. We grieve for and with the victims and their families. We pray for them to find healing and peace and a way to live a good life.

We know that while many people had responsibility, the most visible one almost always goes down first. We are not disputing the need for this to happen.
We are not "defending" anything. We are simply crushed and heartbroken. This is not the Penn State we love, the Penn State that is part of our being.

What you know of Joe Paterno probably comes from television or magazine articles.
We know the man who has lived in the same McKee St house for decades. We have chatted with him as he walked to practice. We have eaten ice cream with him at the Creamery. We have studied in the new library wing his money helped build. We have visited the sports museum and spiritual center he also helped build. We have seen him cheering on other Penn State athletes. We know he loves Penn State as much as we do.

Some of our friends, brothers, husbands, sons have been privileged to put on the Blue and White uniform and listen to 100,000 fans in Beaver Stadium. We know how hard they have worked, how much time they have devoted, how many of them have been part of an excellent scholar/athlete legacy...and how much they love this man and this program.
We aren't stupid or naive. We know Joe Paterno has culpability. We know he could have made different choices - he admitted that. We don't think he is God or always perfect or saintly. But he is the greatest college football coach ever, and he is PSU family, and we don't want his exit to be like this.

WE ARE...not closing our eyes, ignoring reports, pretending this isn't a wretched occurrence.
WE ARE...angry that innocents would be violated under our care.
WE ARE...in support of appropriate punishment for every person involved.
WE ARE...demanding change to a system that would allow this.
WE ARE...not concerned if you do not understand our love and devotion.
WE ARE...PENN STATE proud and we will rise again.

YOU ARE DISGUSTING if you are even a TEENY BIT sympathetic to JOE "PA", those savage students or ANYONE who knew about this...

You could have been one of those articulate and SMART students on the news tonight who I saw interviewed who I *believed* that not all students at Penn are "outraged" by the old man's firing.

but no.... you are JUST as bad.

POOR Penn state... I hope this beefs up enrollment in our area... b/c of those stupid students.

good going.

I would be ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED and embarrassed if my institution covered up such a horrific crime.

I'd be OUTRAGED b/c your degree just lost its value, MrsBLT.

NOBODY is blaming students of the school. NOBODY is putting shame on them.

People are DISGUSTED of such cover up within the school.

I wish people would put their own little bride aside here.

NOBODY CARES about people who graduated from the school.

It's not about students there, students that were there.

Let's get our self centered views on how people might perceived students and alumni and focus on the REAL issue. Children being raped and a cover up. THAT is the issue!!!!

To all you state people,

Clearly YOU do not understand. If an institution is embedding itself in a student's life, (which sounds ominous, by the way) that student might do well to be damn sure that the institution holds its employees to a standard of behavior that the student agrees with.

And right now we want you to know this:

You are MORALLY OBLIGATED to be distraught and sickened. You will get no honors from us "non-staters" for feeling revulsion - it's what NORMAL THINKING PEOPLE DO.
You pray for the "victims to find a way to live a good life"?? Well the statistics don't offer too much hope there, sorry to say.

And I hate to throw more cold water, or Gatorade, whatever, on your virtual rah-rah fest, but here's the thing: YES. This IS the Penn State you love, and the Penn State that is part of your being. If that makes you sad, well, so be it. If that makes you angry, well then, now we're getting somewhere.

Spare us the naive and condescending character reference for "JoePa". Simply put, if Joe was your father, would you be proud of him today? More than likely you would hang your head in shame and disgust as his inaction. If one of those children were YOUR child, would you care where he ate ice cream? Frankly I might care, if only to find him there with a few of my friends and a Louisville Slugger.

YOU ARE... rioting in the streets - for the wrong reason
YOU ARE... unwittingly victimizing these children once more
YOU ARE... perhaps blinded by the "idea" of your hallowed halls, when the real picture is stomach turning

And I wish you luck in that "rise again" thing.

I went to Penn State. I am saddened, sickened, and embarassed beyond belief. I see the news and just cry. Trying to make sense of how this happened, how people could let this happen is impossible to comprehend. To make matters worse, It didn't just involve a coach. It involved Joe Pa, an icon and a role model to all Penn Staters and truly all football enthusiasts. This makes no sense and I fear that as the days go on, it will just get worse. My mind is blown.
