Cash for 6 yo birthday

What is a good amount to give for a 6 year old birthday? It's DD classmate. They are friends but not best friends but have been in same class last two years I'd that matters.

I was thinking $40 but not sure if that's too cheap. I had no idea what to buy her and another parent was told the child didn't need anything.

Thanks

I think $40 is very generous! I must be cheap, but I always give $25 gift cards lol.

My DD is the same age. We’ve never given or received cash as a birthday gift from a classmate, but $40 seems ok.

I’ve never received or given cash for a classmates party and definitely not $40. $20-$25 gift card to target is the norm in my area. Or a toy.

40 is very generous. 25 has always been the norm for us and we usually do a store gift card, but cash works, too.

Re: Cash for 6 yo birthday

DD is 6. We've never done cash but we usually do gifts with a value of $25-30 or $25-30 gift cards.

$40 is very generous.

Re: Cash for 6 yo birthday

I spend too much too. Probably going to start buying $25 gift cards from now on. I usually do a $30 gift card and a small toy (like $15) so spending $45 total. My kids last party with his classmates, he received mostly $25 gift cards, some $30 ones and one $20 gift card.

$25 is the average gift to my kids. I think that is more than fine.

I usually spend $50 but my kids are older (5th, 7th, 9th). That being said, my daughter had a birthday party last month and I would say most people were spending $75 and one person even gave her $100. My husband said that I should probably be reevaluating what I give because I probably look cheap!

One year in elementary school DD had a party at Saf T Swim and she got $100 Toys r Us gift card from a girl she wasn't even that friendly with- just someone from her class.
I knew the parents had some money but we were floored!

I find that odd actually. Why would you spend so much for a classmate? It's not like we all live in Hollywood Chat Icon Chat Icon

Chat Icon I live in a super wealthy area and no one here is buying $100 gifts for a classmate. For a close friend, maybe, but everyone gives the same $30-50 toys from the local toy store.

I hope it freaking stays that way and I’m not shelling out hundreds of dollars a month on birthday gifts in a few years!

I live in a town where the kids all come from well off families and I refuse to be that parent that will come off looking cheap just because I didn't know better haha.

There is no way that I would be spending $ 100 on any of her friends.

But now based on thr majority of the answers I feel bad for giving the $40 because DD birthday is coming up and I hope they don't think we expect them to pay that much.

I feel like as they get older party sizes get smaller and gifts get bigger. When they are 6 you are having a 20/25 kid party. At 12 it's more like 10/15 kids. I think that's part of the difference.

Even at Sweet 16's I don't think we were giving more than $25-$30 for a classmate/friend.

Heck, for friends now the most I have ever given was $50 and that was when they turned 50.

I remember $10 being the standard when I was a kid in 4th or 5th grade and that was 1985. There were some big spenders that gave $20 and that was like hitting the jackpot!
