$25 for a sweet 16 seems low. The standard gift when I was 16 was $50 and that was 21 years ago.

I’m not on the sweet 16 and bar/bat mitzvah circuit yet, but I would give at least $100 for these occasions.

For a classmate?

Yes. I distinctly remember getting $50 from most kids because my birthday is in January so I was one of the first to turn 16 and my parents were annoyed everyone gave so much because then we had to reciprocate. Chat Icon

For when DD starts going to sweet 16s, it’ll depend on what’s standard then. It’s 10 years away so $100 doesn’t seem that out of the realm of possibility.

Wow, ok. That just seems like a lot. I can't imagine how expensive their senior year will be then lol

Do a lot of the girls even have sweet 16s though? I never hear of them around here. What I hear more of is a trip with a few moms and a few girls or a dinner out in the city or at a fancy restaurant with just close friends.

Yes. My friend is an event planner and she does them all the time. She even has a booking for next summer already.

Interesting. I'll be curious to see how many my kids get invited to. There are barely any jewish people so there won't be any Bar or Bat Mitvahs. My son was invited to one.

Knowing my DD"s group of friends that she has right now I doubt we'll get many invites- they are all more of the small group party/events etc. That could change of course and I know she will meet other friends between now and then as she gets into HS so who knows.
I personally hate big parties so I will be pushing her towards something smaller- either we go on a trip or something small with a core group of friends etc

My mom gave my daughter a choice between a party and a cruise (for 9 of us) and she chose the cruise. Scary how much these parties cost as the cruise was not cheap for that many people.

My daughter is having one. After initially saying she just wanted a trip. But we go away a lot, so I think the party is more appealing to her. Several of her friends are having a party, but I would say most of them aren't.

Let me know if you need any recommendations as I know someone who does all the extras and is great.
