Back Yard Pool - Kids visiting
So if you had a back yard pool and you invited other kids over for a play date - no parents staying..kids are all under 10 and about 7 kids total...all kids can swim but some are not as strong as others, do you stay outside for the entire duration of the play date - apart from maybe a quick bathroom break etc where you leave one of the 10 year olds in charge OR do you leave the kids to their own devices while you are inside the house - on the ground level but the pool is towards the back of the yard etc.. you would check on them periodically but you most certainly would not be watching them.
Opinions?

Always stay outside for the entire duration kids are in pool. Is there really any other answer?

I would 100% stay outside the entire time. A 10 year old who's distracted hanging with their friends cannot be expected to watch all the children.

There is no way I would ever not have an adult by the pool.

I would 100% stay outside. Also with 7 kids to keep an eye while in the pool I would feel much more comfortable with at least 1 more adult. I'm just so paranoid around pools

The only thing I can say to this is I would never have 7 kids in a pool if I was by myself. Too hard to keep an eye on everyone.

I won't even let my two-year-old go in with me unless there's another adult, because I have an infant, and what if something happened to me?

Supervised at all times. This shouldn't even be a question. For 7 kids I'd probably have another adult there too. If you have to go inside then everyone out of the pool until you get back.

I could never leave someone else's kid alone in my yard. If I were having a pool playdate, I'd try to have the moms stay if possible.

I'd hire a lifeguard. Its the best option. Pool parties scare the crap out of me when it comes to kids.

A 10 year old is not adult supervision. If the parents are all dropping the kids off, YOU are in charge and responsible for those kids.

I have an 8 turning 9 year old and it is extremely disturbing to me to think that a parent would invite 7 kids of this age over to their pool and consider "leaving them to their own devices."

I would not be the only adult there with 7 kids in a pool. I would also never leave them unsupervised, even for 30 seconds to answer the phone, let alone go to the bathroom. Way too dangerous. I agree with hiring a lifeguard also, that is the only way I'd have a pool party like that.

Re: Back Yard Pool - Kids visiting
I don't think adults should swim alone, so I certainly would never leave a child alone. I think it's even more risky with a group of kids because they start horsing around and no one realizes that someone is having a problem until it's too late. I only leave my kids at a house with a pool if the parents are clear that they are 100% supervised, and truly only with people I trust like family and with no more than 2 kids per adult.

Re: Back Yard Pool - Kids visiting
Thanks for replying everyone. I ran into this situation yesterday. A good friend of mine called me yesterday morning to invite my kids over to use their pool. I said ."should I stay or are you and DH going to be sitting out there with them? to which she said "No DH is working and I will be in the kitchen dong some stuff...of course I will stick my head out to check on them from time to time"....I then replied that I wouldn't feel comfortable with this lack of supervision and she was taken aback stating "but your kids can swim..my kids can swim...they will run and get me if there is a problem"..I said thanks but no thanks. Of course my kids were very disappointed but I would rather them disappointed than drowned :(

Good thing you asked specifically who would be watching! I hope your friend thinks about what you said and realizes what a risk she is taking with her kids.

I wouldn't stay to supervise because I'd hire a life guard and or make the other moms stay. I almost drowned at 2, it took 2 mins of someone not watching me.

We were at a party 4th of July with a hired lifeguard. A few years ago a toddler almost drowned at the party so there's always one there. He was a teenage boy and he was terrible! Talked to a friend and barely watched the pool. When he did it was only the diving board, never scanning the whole pool or watching the shallow end. I was shocked. Just throwing it out there that even with a lifeguard your can't necessarily trust them.

Wow, I would never let my kids over to that persons house EVER. Kids that know how to swim can still drown! And most times they drown with the people around them not even knowing what's going on until it's too late. There is no splashing and dramatic calls for help when people drown.

Sorry, this woman is out of her mind and completely irresponsible. There is absolutely NO WAY you leave several children alone in a swimming pool.

Re: Back Yard Pool - Kids visiting
With kids in a pool I would ALWAYS, without a doubt, stay outside and keep an eye on EVERY kid. I would hope that if I left my child at someone's house to swim they would be out there watching the kids in the pool in case, god forbid, something went wrong. I don't think you should ever be in the house when you have a pool full of kids. JMO.

Re: Back Yard Pool - Kids visiting
Glad you asked!!
There should always be an adult or 2 present when children are in a pool. Always.
I hope the parents of all the other kids they have over know they aren't strict with supervision
