OMG I am LIVID and this is not my child. How are she berate her like that!!! I would have lacerate her if she spoke to my child like that. When I think of my first graders teacher and how sweet and loving she is to all the kids this makes me so sad that other children have to deal with a ***** of a teacher like this. I hope she gets disciplinary action for this and hurrah for the secret videotaper - I guess she is no longer teaching at that school!!

After being shown the video last month, Ann Powell, a Success spokeswoman, described its contents as shocking and said Ms. Dial had been suspended pending an investigation. But a week and a half later, Ms. Dial returned to her classroom and her role as an exemplar within the network.

interviews with 20 current and former Success teachers suggest that while Ms. Dial’s behavior might be extreme, much of it is not uncommon within the network.
Success is known for its students’ high achievement on state tests, and it emphasizes getting — and keeping — scores up. Jessica Reid Sliwerski, 34, worked at Success Academy Harlem 1 and Success Academy Harlem 2 from 2008 to 2011, first as a teacher and then as an assistant principal. She said that, starting in third grade, when children begin taking the state exams, embarrassing or belittling children for work seen as slipshod was a regular occurrence, and in some cases encouraged by network leaders.
“It’s this culture of, ‘If you’ve made them cry, you’ve succeeded in getting your point across,’” she said.

I did not find this surprising, based on what I know about the Success Academy chain. They get great results but I have a feeling what you saw on that video was the rule and not the exception.
They have zero tolerance for childhood, basically. They stock extra underpants and sweats because they don't allow kids to go to the bathroom during practice test (of which I am sure there were many.) Link
It's amazing to me that some people think Success's methods are acceptable.

Yup I know someone who works for this school (not in a teacher capacity) and he says it's horrible. He said because of what he's seen here he would never ever put his DC in that type of school and his co-workers feel the same way.

It's not so much what she said, but the tone and how she yelled at that poor girl.
This is not high school were the kids were maybe goofing off and the teacher got frustrated and screamed. These are 1st graders. They are really still babies. Her tone was not appropriate for speaking to a 1st grade child who did nothing more than make an honest mistake.

I say it all the time. Not every job is for every person. This woman should be working at the dmv
I know my limits and what I can and cannot do. I am not good with working with the public. It's not me. I don't have the patience for people every day - so I work from home and only deal with 1 other person - sparingly.
Her behavior is uncalled for. These are babies she talking to like this. She should not be in a classroom in charge of molding young people. She's definitely Not a role model

Wow, that article is sad. I skimmed through after the first few paragraphs, but I did read that this system serves mostly poor, minority students. The parents may be thinking this is the best shot their disadvantaged kids have at getting a leg up in an unfair education system...which makes me even sadder! That this may be the lesser of two evils in a parents' eyes...

Exactly. that is horrifying. If a teacher ever spoke to my kid like that I would be arrested b/c I would have been at that school making the biggest scene.
I had a first grade teacher that tied my classmate to a chair with an extension cord and put him in the closet b/c he wouldnt sit still in his seat. im 37 yrs old. I still remember that to this day. Shit like this will last with those kids and not in a good way.
and when a bunch of us reconnected on facebook with him..what do u think they remembered..that he was tied to a f**king chair in elementary school.

This video is horrifying. If a teacher ever spoke to my child like that, or pulled their hair, humiliated them by making them pee their pants, or any of the other disgusting "learning tactics" that were mentioned in this article I would not hesitate to go to the school and punch her repeatedly in the face. She would be on the floor looking for her teeth. How could she treat a child like that for making a mistake? Sick f.uck.
