Re: video of teacher yelling at charter school student

This video is presented without any context and while the teacher had a "tone", we don't know any events that happened before.

Yeah, the environment seems rigid, but some kids need structure to learn.

The videographer is a coward to not identify herself. How can you put someone else's name and reputation on the line and not take responsibility for your part in the actions. This teacher's assistant played a part in this as well, but doesn't want to be accountable.

Seriously. I went to Catholic school and had many similar teachers at a young age. I was expecting a lot worse. . . Not saying it's right or a good method of teaching though. I don't like the practices of the school at all.

I say it all the time. Not every job is for every person. This woman should be working at the dmv

I know my limits and what I can and cannot do. I am not good with working with the public. It's not me. I don't have the patience for people every day - so I work from home and only deal with 1 other person - sparingly.

Her behavior is uncalled for. These are babies she talking to like this. She should not be in a classroom in charge of molding young people. She's definitely Not a role model

Smh

ITA I think many people go into teaching for the wrong reasons. Teaching is not just a job in my opinion its a calling. Either you love it and have the patience for teaching young children or you don't. I agree she is not a role model for these kids at all.

My dd is in a large Kindergarten class and I have been lucky enough to be the class parent this year. I've been able to to be in her class many times this year. Its absolutely exhausting in there but her teacher never looses her patience its because she dedicated, loves teaching and has all the kids best interest in heart.

I hope the parents of these kids say something. I would never stand for this with my own children. Unacceptable and unnecessary.

Kids also used to get spanked at school back then. That is certainly not the way of the educational world today though.

Exactly. I like to feel like we have progressed and learned from the mistakes of the past. My parents and in in laws tell stories of kids in their classes back in the 50s being hit on the knuckles with rulers, being forced to wear dunce caps, being belittled and called stupid and all kinds of physical and mental abuse. Luckily we have evolved from that.

Hmm okay. Your response just read of someone that either a.works there, or b. knows the teacher in question, or even c. has a child that attends. To blame the whistle blower and defend this teachers disgusting behavior is just strange IMO.

I think many of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s experienced firsthand or witnessed overly harsh treatment by teachers who may have had good intentions but didn't know better. But we have learned so much since then about the kind of conditions and teachers kids need. So I don't buy the argument that we managed so it's not a big deal.

The other thing that struck me about this video was how amazingly well behaved those kids were. I could see a teacher losing her cool if the class was unruly (and as someone who taught for many years in a similar community, I would relate). But those kids were so quiet that I don't think it was unfair to expect that teacher to speak less harshly. The kid clearly did not understand- she was not being disrespectful or defiant. And then to see the teacher rip up her paper? I find that unacceptable.

No, I have no relation to the school at all.

All I'm saying is this video is shown in isolation with no background information. We don't know what happened right before the video was being recorded, so we have no idea if the student in question was being disrespectful, defiant, or disruptive. All we see is an obviously irritated teacher taking in a stern manner.

What mostly bothers me about this video is the fact that the teacher's assistant that is recording is not taking any responsibility for what goes on in this particular classroom. If they felt this teacher was terrible, why didn't they report her to the administration or, heaven forbid, step in and stop the teacher from treating the kids poorly. Being a silent bystander makes them equally as responsible as this so-called monster teacher.

I'm guessing she probably recorded it and quit. And from what other people have said, this seems to be the way this school is run (berating the kids and beating them down until they get the answers correct). Maybe the assistant had no idea how they operate and was fed up with this teacher's nastiness. Maybe she did report it, maybe administration didn't care, who knows. Who cares. What I've seen is disgusting. I don't even know what a first grader could possibly do to even warrant this kind of reaction.

My daughter's 2nd grade teacher (who was AWFUL BTW) ripped up another student's paper in class last year for doing her homework at indoor recess (homework due the following day, not late homework), with the intent of humiliating her. That didn't go over so well. AT ALL.

Out of context or not, that is very disturbing. Obviously the person that took that video was seeing things like that constantly in the classroom. Enough that made her want to secretly videotape that specific teacher. Every single child in the classroom was quietly listening, including the child that was chastised. I could never in 1 million years aimagine sending my child into an environment like that . That woman should not be teaching, I don't care if it was one moment or hundred, it is not acceptable with first-graders.

There is absolutely no reason she should even have that tone when speaking to the children. Nice way to build up self esteem. Teachers are suppose to be role models and that particular teacher was not based on the video.

I agree that taking things out of context can be unfair BUT this little girl was wrong on an answer. She was not hitting another child, acting in an unsafe way, being disrespectful or a magnitude of other things that I could understand a teacher getting a "tone" about. But I'm sorry to get this upset about a child not getting an answer right is just insane.

I don't speak that way to my college students, so I do find her tone unnecessary.

You can gain respect by instilling fear, but you can also gain it by showing kindness and mercy.

I don't know, the whole thing was odd to me. I expected it to be much worse but I don't understand why this child was sent to the "calm down" chair. As far as I could see, she was already pretty calm. I wonder if something happened prior to this? Not justifying this at all but it was all so strange. That woman should not be a teacher!

Some of the kids in my son's first grade class complained that the teacher was a "yeller." I asked my son (who is totally oblivious btw) if she was a yeller and he said no. I think he didn't perceive her as a yeller because I yell all the time!

Wow, as a teacher, I'm more disturbed by the methods used at this school in the article, the reliance on standardized exams alone, and about how their teachers are overworked. Sitting with their hands clasped in front of them with their eyes on the teacher?
