Re: Apple picking - too late?
Most likely, yes. The latest we've gone is the 3rd week in September and there were next to no apples left on the trees. Everything was picked over, most of the apples were on the floor. Crazy as it is (because it's not yet fall) the best time to go is the first few weeks in September. I'd be surprised if you'd find anything left on the trees now that it's October.
ETA - I responded for LI............upstate might still have a nice selection but I know on the island it's now pretty late for apple picking.

I've only ever gone in October. Different types of apples harvest at different times. You won't find the selection you would in September, but you should be able to find something if you go to a large orchard.

I live upstate and I've only even been apple picking in October. I'd call the orchard you plan to go to and ask them if they have anything left. I think you should be fine. I've gone Colombus Day weekend several times and never had a problem getting apples.

I would like to go next weekend. I don't really want to take home a ton of apples and don't care what kind. Just want to take the kids. Would love a recommendation for where to go, closest to Nassau.

We went to Windy Acres today...most of the trees were completely bare. There were a some golden delicious left. They said today was their last day for U-pick.

I think if you go upstate or even to Jersey, you will be fine. I've gone in September and in October and its different apples, but they were still plenty. I think LI Orchards only grow certain kinds that harvest earlier.

We went today in NJ to a small orchard - there were a decent number of apples left but, most were higher up in the tree. We did find a few trees where the kids would be able to pick.
This weekend was applefest in Warwick so there is still apple picking in the Hudson Valley region.

We went to hanks pumpkin town in watermill yesterday and they still had plenty of apples. Like one of the pp said, they're harvested at different times so only certain rows were open.
