If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
Do you do family related things without him? We have tried for 2 weeks to go pumpkin picking but the only day DH has off on the weekends is Saturday and it rained both days. The next 2 weekends we are kinda booked. Would you do this by yourself with your kids? I don't want DC to miss out on things because of my husbands job!
Another example is my parents are taking all of us on a cruise for my mother's retirement. I know already that DH won't be able to get off from work. Obviously I am going to go, but I feel bad about it!
I know this is going to be an issue for a long time coming since DH is low man on the totem pole and my weeks off as a teacher are prime weeks! We haven't gone away in 2 years because of this job! :(

yes I do things with out dh all the time. I can't wait around for him, unfortuatley. He has off on the weekends but we are so busy our house lacks the care it needs so for ex this weekend, I am going to my nephews bday party with the kids.
But I have done other things with out him. I took my kids to Boston during the week with out him to see friends.
I have gone pumpkin picking with out him.

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
My husband is on call on the weekends and attends conferences and workshops somewhat often. That leaves me with the kids solo about 2 weekends per month.
We do things solo all the time. We often go to festivals, farms, parks, parties with our friends without DH.
I used to get upset if DH would cancel weekends plans because he has to go into surgery but now we still go without DH. I have gotten used to it.

My DS works nights and has a rotating schedule so sometimes I do things without him (will usually go with my sister and her kids). If I can, I will wait until he gets up which is late afternoon.

Yes I always do. It is what it is. I actually have two other girlfriends with kids whose DHs work nights/weekends. We just went pumpkin picking this weekend and we were joking and calling ourselves the single moms club because our hubbies are always missing!

I work Saturdays (and nights) and my husband takes the kids places on Saturdays without me. I can't insist that they stay home when I am not there.

Yes - I went pumpkin picking last week with the kids without DH - my parents, aunt and cousin came with me.
I try my best to schedule things when he's off but, sometimes it doesnt' work out. I usually ask my parents to come or my friend who's husband works weekends as well (her kids are the same age as mine).

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
Birthday parties and things like that I don't usually care about. I'll go to all those things by myself. But for some reason to me pumpkin picking and vacations just don't seem right to me. I guess it's something I just need to get over though. It's more of a guilty feeling like he's missing out on their lives.

We try to do things together but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way.
We went on vacation in Sept and my DH could only come for 1/2 the week. We stayed without him. He was away on business last weekend and I took DS pumpkin picking.
I am sure there will be plenty I can't do because of work and why should DS suffer. It always works itself out.

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
Yes! It stinks too. We do things whenever we can even if I need to take off a weekday when he is off. I took them apple picking with my sister earlier this year and then we went pumpkin picking yesterday with DH. (rare weekend day off). My mom will go with us to White post for the girls b-day, but DH is working for the actual date. :(

DH works long hours, sometimes on the weekends and takes business trips often. I do not change my plans for his work schedule. If he is home that is great, if not I still go.

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
We both work tight schedules.
We will do stuff solo (def pumpkins, fall photos of kids, festivals). It's more about the kids. We do schedule apple picking as a family every year. Honestly, this year, we are picking our pumpkin from stop n shop. We will carve it as a family!
Our Saturdays & Sundays are tight and we pencil in family days (ie walk in park, festivals) in advance. There are many times one of us is working... So we don't accept every play date & dinner invite. We also only do girls & boys night once a year.
As for vacations, DH gets more than me & I just ask him to stay local so I can see the kids when I get back from work. We do all my vacations with the whole family together.

We rotate. I didn't get Columbus Day off today. DH took the boys to Kings Dominion (very similar to Dutch Wonderland but in VA). He went with our friends. I could have easily taken the day off but I did not mind.
I took boys to Dutch Wonderland this summer without DH. I went with our friends and had a great time.
I was waiting for DH to go apple picking and then the day we were supposed to go, it rained. I wished I had just gone without DH earlier in the season. Now we have plans for the next 2 weekends and we probably won't go at all now.
I know DH can't come with us to everything but he comes to what he can.

DH and I are both retail parents, often times weeks go by without even a day off together. I've taken DD to things, so has he. I wouldn't want her to miss out because I'm working that day and DH is off or vice versa...

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
My husband has a 6 month busy season where he works anywhere from 7 am all the way to midnight and sometimes 2am the next day. Mostly it is to 10 pm though. During this time frame I take the kids to things without him. We even went away on vacation for an extended weekend with my parents. Is it ideal? Nope. But it is what it is, and we live with it.

Yes I will take DD on outings like this too, we can't wait for him. Last yr we waited so long to see Santa, it was 12/22, and I just took her. I'm not going to let her miss out on things just because his schedule doesn't always cooperate.

Yes. DS and I have done a lot without DH. If I were to wait for DH to do things, we'd sit in the house 24/7.
Although DH has special requested he come with us pumpkin picking this year... so far we've been trying to go for 2 weeks and it hasn't happened.

I try to do as much as I can when my husband is around but if I cannot fit it in then I have no issue doing it alone with my son (or with a friend). I would never make my son miss out on something (nor would my husband want him to) because my husband has a crazy schedule!

Re: If you have a DH that works crazy hours/weekends...
My DH is a workaholic. If I wait for him, my DS will never do anything. It's a very sore subject. But yes, I have taken DS pumpkin picking, to the beach, to St. Patrick's Day parades, everywhere really, without DH.

All the time. We wouldn't get anything done if we tried to wait. It's so hard. It's hard for him, me, DD. The whole family. We make it work, but hit our rough patches if it's been a while since we have had quality time together.
He sleeps during the day so sometimes I feel like I'm a married single mom. It's hard keeping a toddler and newborn quiet in the house all day long!
