baby's naps

my LO is 6m old and sleeps 12 hours overnight and takes 4 naps throughout the day. sometimes the 1st nap is 2 hours and the rest are 1 hour, or sometimes all 4 naps are 1 hour long. his wakeful periods are usually not longer than 1 hour, 90 minutes max. it's great that he sleeps so well and i hesitate to even sound like i'm complaining - but for those of you who had similar situations, when did your LO transition to 2 longer naps and 1 late afternoon catnap? i'm eagerly awaiting a time when he is awake for longer stretches. i thought it would happen around now, but no end in sight of the constant need for sleep.

DD did 3 one hour naps until I think around 8 months when she dropped to two 1-1.5 hour naps. That didn't last long and around 10 months she started dropping down to one. She's now over 2 and still does the same one 3 hour afternoon nap so she awake much longer stretches but still sleeps the same amount really.

it is great, don't get me wrong. but LO does not sleep well, or at all, anywhere but the crib. it makes going anywhere or doing anything for longer than an hour a bit of a challenge.

If you're out and about and your LO is in the stroller, what happens? I find babies adapt to their surroundings pretty easily. You shouldn't be stuck in the house all day long.

He doesn't sleep well in the stroller. If he is completely exhausted he may drift off but any noises or bumps in the sidewalk (I live in nyc so these are everywhere) usually wake him. Even though his eyes may close again quickly, his sleep isn't quality so he isn't getting good rest. He is pretty sensitive to missing quality naps so we try not to do too much "motion sleep". Even in the car it usually takes him at least 40 minutes of driving to drift off. Chat Icon I'm sure he'll grow out of it....someday. Ha

At 6 months my DD was already down to two naps and a catnap. Shortly after 6 months she transitioned to 2 naps. A morning nap (9:30-11) and an afternoon nap (2-3:30)

I don't really remember when they dropped those early naps. By I would say 9/10 months we were down to 2 naps. By 1, 1 nap.

I really just wanted to say dd1 NEVER slept in the stroller or car (the car ONLY when nap time and not for as long as crib) she never adjusted. She was 3 and in Disney when we were shocked she fell asleep at night in the stroller. She always needed to be in a bed/crib/ pnp

Dd2 is more flexible. But I still try to be home for her nap. It's just easier. Unless we are away, somewhere special or important.
