BFing issues NEED IDEAS
Hi ladies, The last couple of days I have been having an issue with BFing, DD is 10.5 months and has 6 teeth. When she goes to BF on the left side it hurts. She tugs at the nipple a lot and a couple of days ago she created a cut on the base of my nipple doing that. I believe that is where the pain is coming from. The problem is not just the pain during feedings. The last few nights (around 10) I have been feeling a plug on that side. Three nights ago I woke her up to nurse it out which worked fine. Two nights ago I left it and it took two morning feedings to get out. Last night I woke her up around 10 and again at 2:30a because the plug will not go away. Nursing isn't helping and my nipple and breast is so tender. Her latch looks fine. Not sure if the tugging is normal, but I need to figure something out. I've used cream, ointment, lanolin, and gel pads, and I feel like each night it gets worse. I have moved OOS since I last saw my LC so I think I need to find one up here. Is that who I should call at this point? Or should I see a Dr?

Re: BFing issues NEED IDEAS
For the plug, what worked for me was advil (takes down the swelling in the tissue around the plug which can help make more room for the plug to come out) and applying a heating pad with moist heat. Got the plug out every time.
I'm not sure about the tugging specifically, but whenever my son bit and caused pain during breast feeding, I would say "unh unh" sternly and unlatch him and make an unhappy/pained face. He got over the biting in a week or so.
Good luck!

Thanks. We only keep Tylenol in the house so I have been taking that, but Advil should work better.

I would get it checked, you could also have developed thrush. I did end up with mastitis from a plugged duct, but thrush is very common to develop too. You can look up your local LaLeche League to find a new LC, or ask your ped.

Lecithin (found in the vitamin section of stores) has been known to help with and prevent clogs. I take it every day.
And this might sound strange but I know people who swear by it -- use a vibrator or electric toothbrush and use it to break up the clog.
Try putting a little breastmilk on the sore as well.

I used to get constant plugs on one side. I took lecithin for a few weeks which help. The vibrating toothbrush helped too. I also just bit my lip and pushed that f*cker out. Heel of your hand on the top part of it, push til the pain subsides a bit and/or you start dripping, then move down a hair and do it again. Down to the nipple. Hurts like a *****, works.

Thanks. This was very helpful. I have pushed these f*ckers out on a few occasions. You're right. Hurts like a bizatch but the relief after is so much better. (Even with the tenderness) It was not working this time. Also, I am intrigued... Vibrating toothbrush?!?!?! You must elaborate.

Use the opposite side of a vibrating toothbrush (the back side) and hold it on the epicenter of the plug, massage around with it. The vibrations help loosen it up.
Also, you will look ridiculous but get on all fours and use the pushing tips I gave you while on all fours. Put a dish or towel under you to catch drips. After doing that and dripping for a bit, nurse. That always got it out for me within 1 or 2 tries.
