DS (8 weeks) goes down easily for naps but takes FOREVER at bedtime, what am I doing wrong?
I never thought I'd have so many questions for a second child!
DS is 8 weeks old and is on an eat, play, sleep schedule.. he's up about 1.5-2hrs at a time for the most part. He goes down SO easily for naps, for the most part, but bedtime requires 60-90 minutes of me trying over and over to nurse him (he only falls asleep on the boob at this time), burp him, and put him in the RnP where we rock him for up to an hour sometimes before he goes to sleep.
Part of the issue is I try to aim for a bedtime between 7-8, so I never know what to do about his last nap. What if he wakes up at 4:00? do I nap him again? Keep him up until 7? That seems too long! Maybe he's overtired so he takes forever to get to sleep at night? But that would mean puting him down at 6???
I think I"m answering my own question but I still need to hear it from other people

Re: DS (8 weeks) goes down easily for naps but takes FOREVER at bedtime, what am I doing wrong?
Ds is 8 weeks tomorrow. I try feed him at 10-11pm and hope to get a 4-5 am wake up for next bottle. But like today he just had a bottle so illl be getting up with him probably 2am.. When ever he wakes (2 am or 4 am etc) i just put him right back to sleep.
Sometimes DS goes 3 hrs between feedings during the say other times it can be 6. I just feed on demab. I play with him a bit and put him in swing rnp etc and he hangs out or falls asleep. I also have a 3 yr old to entertain
I think you are trying too hard to have a schedule and thats really hard at this age

7-8 is a pretty early bedtime for an 8 week old. If it were me, I would do another nap and put him down closer to 10. Pretty sure DD went to bed around 10 at that age (though she never SSTN so it was always nap time for her!)

Re: DS (8 weeks) goes down easily for naps but takes FOREVER at bedtime, what am I doing wrong?
It sounds like he is overtired. My ds is a good sleeper and was sleeping 8-6 at 8 weeks. I would let him nap again after 4 if he needs/wants to. I think at that age my ds would take a cat nap in the swing and then wake up for a short period, then pjs and bottle/bed. (At 8 weeks I was still nursing though). I find if we miss his "window" and he gets too tired he won't eat well and then we would have to rock him to sleep. He is 14 weeks now and his pm schedule today was nap 345 to 430. Bottle at 5 and another small bottle at 6. In bed and asleep by 630.
Hope this helps!!!

Dd is 8w and has no interest at sleeping at 7 or 8pm. She has been falling asleep between 1030-11pm wakes up briefly for a change and boob munchie at 430 then goes back down till 930ish. I give her a bath and 745 and we just relax. I'm letting her set the schedule till I go back to work at the end of July when we will be forced to have a set schedule.

DD is 6w and this is her schedule. She wouldn't want to sleep for the night at 7 or 8 either. She eats roughly every 3 hours during the day (8 am, 11, 3, 6:30, 9) and falls asleep between 10:30-11pm. She then sleeps until 4:30/5ish, wakes up quickly to eat a couple of ounces and then falls asleep again. A 7 or 8 bedtime is for an older baby, I think your LO is probably just not tired yet and that's why you're having a hard time. I will say though that my DD put herself on this schedule so it may not work for your LO. Good luck!
ETA: When DD sleeps after her 4:30 bottle until 8, I think of it as part of her "night time" sleep and not a nap because she is only up for about 30 minutes. So I feel as if she "wakes" for the day at 8.

ITA. DS is almost 5 months old and goes to bed around 9pm. At 8 weeks old, he was going to bed at 10pm. 7 or 8 seems really early to me. Try a short nap around your dinner time, then keep the baby up for a few hours and then do the bedtime routine.

I'm a little confused about these responses. I do understand that most people keep their babies up until 10/11 at this age, we did it with DD so that we got more sleep when she did her long stretch. I prefer to put him down when DD goes down (8:00) and the sacrifice is that I get a little less sleep.
He does eventually go down, sometimes 8, sometimes 830, sometimes 9, but it always requires so much work. When he is asleep, however, he is down for 5-6 hours until he gets up for a feed, so I'm not sure why this can't be his bedtime? I'm not sure how napping him and then putting him to bed later will make him fight bedtime less, isn't bedtime bedtime? Isn't he just shifted two hours earlier than other babies in all respects then?

dd was going to bed around 10 at that age. i would follow his lead one night and see what happens. let him nap when he wants and then see when he wants to go down for bed (not letting it get too late)

It's not about "keeping the baby up", it's following natural sleep patterns. Keeping an 8 week old awake for over 2 hours probably means they will be overtired and therefor have trouble falling asleep when they usually dont. You are trying to give him a bedtime at 8, but from what you said, it seems he needs another nap around 6 probably, which would shift his bedtime closer to 10. OR he might go to bed at 6ish, and wake for feeding around 11. If he's generally a good sleeper, you prob just need to play around with bedtime and find what works for him.

I don't keep her up. She's awake. She sets her own schedule. Mine would just scream if I put her down at 8. My ped said to start a routine but to follow her lead for bedtime.

I always let DS set his own schedule. Even now at 7 months he might take a nap right before bed and he'll still STTN.

DD got cranky and would nap every 2 hours like clock work during the day. In the evening, like you said, if she was up at 4pm she usually stayed up until bedtime which was 8 or 9. I would usually do a dream feed around 11 and she's typically sleep through until morning. (Although that didn't last past 4 months old!)
I would probably give it a try and see if he can handle staying up until bedtime. Especially if you're going to put him down around 7. Three hours awake doesn't seem so bad for him to stay up. FTR, I don't see anything wrong with a 7 or 8 bedtime at all. I don't think I'd have the patience to rock DC for an hour. I would probably nurse DD, try to put her down and if she didn't go, just wait a little bit and try again. DD is very easy to put down at night, but if she doesn't go to sleep I've always just nursed her again and put her back down and she usually goes to sleep the second time.
