So you are basically saying that a teacher that makes 40k a year is not giving the students as good of an education as a teacher that makes 100k a year? I couldn't disagree more. I am not arguing, and I won't say anything else on the matter.

Take most any service type/knowledge industry out there....and the highest expenses are going to be the people and salaries!

How many of these need to be completely re-paid every year? Textbooks - you reuse them for a few years at least. Computers and Software can be re-used and SHARED, etc...
I am not a teacher and my DH is, so I completely understand the pay structure is different than the norm. However, Teachers are mandated to get a masters degree, have to take a certain amount of professional development each year. The teachers also signed contracts a few years ago, giving up their pay increases for 2 years just to decrease the number of teachers laid off and the budget down.
These teachers are also the people that are with your children everyday for hours. I would think that as parents, you would want to ensure that you have the highest quality professionals that there are.
Sorry this is so long, I am just not sure why people are surprised that Salaries are the biggest chunk of a school budget, especially in a district as HUGE as Sachem!
I have no issue with teachers' salaries. IMO most are underpaid. But not all employees are teachers. I think administrators (Superintendents, Asst. Superintendents, etc.) don't need raises every year and don't need to be making 1/4 million dollars.
250k is not a huge salary to run a multi million dollar company. Sachem is the largest (or one of) school districts on LI. I think they are getting off cheap by only paying that. Superintendents usually have doctorate degrees and have tons and tons of experience. They are not sitting in a cushy office or playing golf all day. They work hard and I'm not sure you would find someone to do it for much less.
Teachers make 100k +. What would you think is a fair salary for someone who manages an entire district.
Teachers who have been working for 20 years are making over 100k, the majority are not.
Any profession where the avg salary is 100k should not be earning a tax payer funded pension - the teachers union has done a grave disservice to everyone except teachers

Regardless, you shouldn't punish the children today for a decision made years ago. The pension contributions are set in stone, they can not be adjusted no matter how many times the budget is rejected.
Certain items (salary, pension) just can not be reduced/eliminated, no matter how opposed we are to it. By the time the budget comes to a vote those items have long been settled.

Our budget failed last year. They asked for a ridiculous amount. They revised it, made it under the cap magically (funny how that works) it passed, and we still have K, sports, etc.
It will work out!. They are playing the future K parents like a fiddle. Typical of all districts at budget time.

And to touch on what we pay in taxes. Everyone seems to think since we are out here in Suffolk our taxes are low. It's not uncommon to find Sachem residents who pay 10-14k in taxes a year.

I didn't say that...you mentioned that where you are from teachers don't get paid that much. I'm just saying that you need to take the cost of living into account.

I totally agree with what you are saying, but unfortunately by budget vote time, it is too late.
People need to get involved in the process and understand who they are electing to their Board of Ed and what they stand for. Rejecting the budget on May 21st doesn't solve anything.

What I'm saying is that since they've changed it to where you pay into it, we won't see the effects for a long time. Not sure how to say that politely, since that's what a good portion of the budget is going to. 75% for salaries and pensions is a lot!!

This issue is NOT limited to LI - it is happening EVERYWHERE in the state (even places that have less than lucrative contracts (ie 7 year experience - 50K, top pay (25-30 years) - 95K)). Schools have lost 50% of their state aid - people need to write to their state representatives and push them to better fund schools.
Last year, I wrote Governor Cuomo and my local representatives a letter every day for 30 days about the importance of education - schools and communities need to start LARGE SCALE letter writing campaigns to get better funding for our schools!

I'm not too sure about that 90% number as our district had a 37% increase to the pension this year. There is nothing we can do about that now....pensions are grandfathered in and can not be touched but for new hires there needs to be a huge overall. The healthcare package also needs to be looked at just like every other job in the country to see if there could be any changes to that. I have no issue with their salaries as I think they are well deserved.
Also, Sachem is not the first hit hard by the cap...all districts are hit hard and are cutting back something. Sachem is in trouble because instead of issuing a normal tax increase for the last few years they used their reserve funds. Well those funds run out and now they can't sustain their programs. Until they figure out how to get those reserves back up they are going to be in trouble for many years.

I really can't deal. Teachers are bashed at every opportunity. How dare we fight for fair salaries? We should be ashamed ourselves :(LMFAO
We go to school for 6 years, hold high level degrees, and in most districts we do not make 6 figures until it is almost time for retirement.
I know I am not the only teacher that gives up her lunch to help students with assignments or prepare for talent shows.
We work hard. But, everybody hates us.

They're not running Fortune 500 companies! I'm not saying their job is easy but the people who actually spend 8+ hours a day educating the children and then continuing to work at home deserve the raises and the higher salaries.

I have the utmost respect for all teachers and think many go above and beyond, but you know what, so do other people.

Well if you really want to compare, I worked 10 hours a day, commuted for 4. I was on call every night and every weekend. Never went to lunch except for maybe once every other week. Did not have a company credit card, nor was I able to write off things from my job on my taxes. I worked hard, sometimes we worked through the night for days at a time and slept on the floor. In last 5 years I worked we had no raises, minimal bonuses, increased health care costs. Most of the people I worked with did not make over $100,000 and all had degrees if not masters. They layed off numerous people and I was doing the work that 3 people did before. I only had 3 weeks vacation, 5 sick days and 3 personal days. But you know what, I LOVED my job and I signed up for what I did. I didn't complain and do a woe is me I work so hard because there are plenty of people who work just as hard if not harder or in more dangerous jobs.
This is not a tit for tat issue on who's job is more important or hard. The issue is that in today's economic climate almost everyone is doing more with less and we need to be sympathetic to that.

Also, Sachem is not the first hit hard by the cap...all districts are hit hard and are cutting back something. Sachem is in trouble because instead of issuing a normal tax increase for the last few years they used their reserve funds. Well those funds run out and now they can't sustain their programs. Until they figure out how to get those reserves back up they are going to be in trouble for many years.
****They are the most in debt. Most if not all districts are functioning on reserves. (I messed up the quote thing on here sorry)
