Re: confused . .school budget vote

There was a chart going around showing the budget increases over the last few years in Sachem...and if you average them all together, it's about 1.7% per year...including this large increase. That's lower than any neighboring district.
Is it high? Yes! But Sachem has had a few years in the recent past where they asked for no increase at all. I think it's only fair to vote yes to this budget during the district's time of need. The state forced them to deplete the savings they had that allowed them to have such low budgets. And then the state decided to implement Common Core, which is very expensive. And then the state took money away. It's not really fair to punish the children in the schools because the state is run by morons.

Totally agree Rachel! Scare tactics every single year to get people to vote yes. School taxes are atrocious here, and for what?! . The school I grew up going to is on the top 2000 list, in the Midwest, where taxes are like 2k a year. Many LI high schools are not even on that list, and their taxes are 10k. Its administrators salaries, period. Too many districts in 100 mile radius. Too much waste. So many changes need to be made.

Can you please post the source of that list? I'd like to see it.

Eta- is it the Newsweek 2013. I saw Jericho on the first page... I think Jericho is on LI, but I went to school here so my geography skills aren't that good - me also can't read so good either.

Eta - if you do a sort on ny - LI districts are all over that list.

Upstate is fighting for the money- and they're winning.

Upstate is in the same boat in terms of cutting programs at schools. I know of several schools that are facing insolvency in the next few years due to the current fiscal crisis.

The main problem for ALL school districts is the Gap Elimination Adjustment, which was implemented in 2010-2011. Governor Paterson could not balance the budget so he balanced it on the back of school districts. He required schools to pay millions of dollars to the state - with no end in sight. When revenues decline and costs continue to rise, government agencies, including schools, have two options: increase taxes to pay for programs and services at existing levels or reduce or eliminate programs and services.

In the 90s, the state provided over 50% of the cost to run schools. Today, they provide 25%. The difference has to be made up somehow.

Upstate is dealing with the same issues as LI. My school district is closing 2 of the 3 elementary schools (one that my daughter was slated to go to in 2014) and the district I work for is probably going to close 1 maybe 2 elementary schools to deal with the budget gap. My union voted not to our contract proposla because the teachers are not going to keep taking the hits when administration gets greedier. Bottom line: it's bad up here too. And FYI- taxes around me are in the 10,000- 12,000 range too.

Re: confused . .school budget vote

If the cap is 3% then why do they need to increase the budget 7%? That seems like alot? They couldn't balance the budget at like 5%?

At 3% we will lose a lot of things. They need the entire 7% for everything to stay the same.

7% is a lot considering many families... mine included didn't get a raise this year. And normally I only get a 2% raise. Where are families supposed to get this money from?

Sachem took pay freezez for a few years in a row a few years back. They put their extra state money towards the budget, so that way they didn't have to raise taxes during hard times while other school districts held onto this money and raised their taxes. As you can see in the above charts, even with this increase it is STILL lower over time than other districts. Does it suck? yes! but I don't think people are giving it a chance by not believing it. Teachers hung up signs around the district....people ripped them down. As teachers were hanging signs up, drivers were yelling at them about the budget.

So thank you for going to the rally :)

If you read the budget plan, it is only $40 more/month.

Anything for the kids. IMO $10/week is not a lot and when homes depreciate because there are no services and extra things at the schools and no one will want to move in the area and will move out, then we will see how fast people who say no will change their mind. That chart PROVES that 12 schools have raised their taxes more than Sachem has in the last 5-6 years.
