Synthroid

I have been on synthroid for about 4-5 years for hypothyroidism. My levels have been great and my dr monitors them even more closely now that I'm pregnant. A co-worker mentioned today that she has heard there could be a correlation between synthroid/hypothyroidism during pregnancy and autism. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Re: Synthroid

I've heard that an underactive thyroid can harm development in utero. However, if you are taking the proper dosage of Synthroid it shouldn't be a problem.

I've also heard that a large percentage of autistic children have underactive thyroids, which go undiagnosed by typical blood work.

Sorry to freak you out!! That's exact what I did! I couldn't find reliable information when I googled, so I figured I would ask here.

Re: Synthroid

I've never heard of that and this is my 3rd pregnancy. I have 2 perfectly healthy children and I've been on synthroid since I was 17.

Thyroid is not something to mess with in pregnancy. Tell her to shut her trap. Hypothyroidism (untreated) in pregnancy can lead to fetal brain issues. Sorry she stressed you out.

ETA: untreated hypothyroidism***

Re: Synthroid

i'm on synthroid. my endo wanted to make sure my levels were good before we were trying. she did tell me there could be some health risk if my levels weren't good.

i see my endo every 6-8 weeks. so important to have your levels checked throughout your pregnancy.
