DH and I are going down to Nashville in a few months to start looking around in the "Middle Tennessee" area, specifically Murfreesboro area. His sister has lived there for many years and likes it. I think there is a crime problem in the cit of Memphis but not sure of surrounding areas. One thing I've heard about TN is that you had better be prepared to send our kids to private school because the public school system is not that great but not sure if that is true or not.

I have no experience but my cousin and his family move everywhere for his job. He said if he could pick one place to live permanently it would be TN ( they lived in Franklin though).

TN is very pretty, cheap and very friendly. I have family that lives south of Nashville and they love it.

Re: Memphis Tenessee
My parents moved to Nashville from NY when I was turning 5. We moved back to NY when I was 10. Loved Nashville and would definitely go back but it isn't NY. We knew several people from our town who moved there for 5-7 years and then moved back to NY.
No the schools aren't great. I went to private school as did everyone we knew down there.
It is a great place, very friendly people. I have a lot of great memories.

Haven't been in years, but went a lot as a teen to the Nashville area and I loved it.
I know some people who have moved down there to various areas but they are all retired.

My husband is from Franklin. He lived in Brentwood, Tn for a few years and then lived most of his life in Franklin. He onlly moved here 10 years ago.
I love this area because it's so close to Nashville. It's an awesome city.
As far as memphis, he says some of the areas are really really bad but, some are nice. He said TN isn't known for it's schools but, in the Memphis area there is a private school called Christian Brothers that is very highly regarded.

My college best friend lives in Cordova, TN, which is an unincorporated town just outside of Memphis city line.
She loves it. I've visited her a couple of times and it's a really nice suburban area. Lots of stores, restaurants with easy access to Memphis.

One of my BFF DH is stationed there so she lives there for now. Says there are good and bad areas. I do remember her calling me once because she felt unsafe while she was pumping gas.

Re: Memphis Tenessee
we are looking outside Nashville...less crime. more family friendly. Friends moved to Hendersonville. We LOVE the area from what we can see. It was voted ( family Circle I think? Or Wamans Day), one of the best places to raise a family. Very community oriented area.

Memphis Tenessee
I went to law school in Nashville and my family loved it so much that they all picked up and moved close to Murfreesboro. I have spent a lot of time in that area and it is wonderful. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has.
As a general matter, no Tennessee does not spend as much on students as other parts of the country. Partly because the property taxes are so low, mainly because there is no state income tax.
dm24, do you know what areas of Tennessee you are looking at? Hendersonville is great, if somewhat far form the city. Brentwood and Franklin are also very nice. If you want to be close to downtown, I love Green Hills and the Vanderbilt area.
Browneyes, I have friends from law school who settled in Memphis. Most of them live in the Germantown area and love it. But others are spread out throughout the city. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to ask them and get an answer!
