Neighborhoods in Queens
I think everyone has suggested great areas, I live in Whitestone and love it.
That said RE taxes are lower but income taxes if you live in NYC and make a good salary are high. An area like Floral Park for example, which also has the LIRR and about the same time as N.Queens, you could get a house cheaper and by eliminating NYC income tax you would probably pay the same in RE taxes as income and RE in Queens, just a suggestion

I rented in Flushing (near Kissena Park), Woodside (between Woodside Ave. & Queens Blvd) & Sunnyside (46th St between Queens Blvd & Northern Blvd area).
I think my favorite neighborhood was Sunnyside and it was closest to the city. I was about a 2 block walk to the 7 train and there were lots of fun restaurants and bars there. I was single then though.
We might've been neighbors! That was my hood for awhile, too. I'm over in Maspeth now.
ETA: I mean in Sunnyside- 46th between Queens Blvd. & Northern.

Halfbaked, I was probably your neighbor too. I lived in Sunnyside for many years and spent a lot of time in Maspeth because many of my high school friends were from there.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
I live in Bay Terrace (Bayside), houses here are fairly expensive. My commute is amazing, I drive to the Long Island City ferry dock and take the ferry to Wall street. door to door an hour at MOST...on a great day 45 minutes.
Douglaston, Beechurst, Whitestone and Astoria are wonderful. I'd also suggest the LIC new development area, we lived there before DS, 1 stop to grand central...amazing.

It really is a small world! I always see LIF and think LI. It's nice to see fellow Queens people here.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
When I lived in Queens, I met several people who considered themselves Long Islanders, since we're not seperated by a bridge like the other boros.

I've never met anyone who lives in Queens who considered him or herself a Long Islander. More often them's fightin' words

Just like when people from Queens go into Manhattan, they're going into "the city", even though Queens is a boro of NYC I

I seem to recall a thread debating this at one point. I consider myself a Queens girl- born and bred! Manhattan and Long Island are like other worlds to me. Even Brooklyn. And forget Staten Island and the Bronx.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
DH is from Whitestone/Melba area. It is really nice over there. When we started looking for houses, we looked there first but it was too $$$$$$$$$ for us.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens
Affordable and Queens don't go together.. I just did a refi closing last night in Forest Hills, home worth $1.2 million. The only affordable area in Queens (~ $100-500K homes) are Jamaica, Ozone Park, S. Ozone Park, Woodhaven, Richmond Hill and not so great sections of Howard Beach, Middle Village/Glendale/Ridgewood.

Grew up in Whitestone and live in Bayside now.
Never had to commute to the city from there but it is nice living here...I always say it suburban-ish....

I agree Have lived in MV forever & it's definitely not affordable, the house prices are high & my property taxes are ridiculously high considering that it's not a huge lot size at all. I guess you're paying for location more than anything. It's a great clean safe area though & it works for me for now so I'll probably be staying for a while.
