Neighborhoods in Queens

What are some nice, affordable neighborhoods in Queens? I only know Bayside (DH grew up there). I love my house but am thinking about moving off of the island to try and save money and have a shorter commute. Thanks!

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

Forest Hills is great but probably not the most affordable. The neighboring Rego Park is much more so.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

I live in Forest Hills and like it a lot. Not the MOST affordable but definitely more affordable than Manhattan/Brooklyn. Rego Park and Kew Gardens which border FH on the West and East are slightly more affordable and still lovely areas.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

Keep in mind though that house prices are more expensive in Queens and you get less yard space.
The upside is that taxes are lower than LI.

I'm in Bayside and my morning express bus commute is 1 hour to midtown, evening commute it 1-1/2 hours or longer depending upon traffic.
LIRR doesn't save me time because I'm on the east side and have to take a bus home in Bayside.
Subway isn't even an option. I loathe (strong enough word?) the 7 train and the whole Flushing connection thing.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

If you're looking for an easier commute to the city via public transit you may want to stay in the Western/Central Queens areas: Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, Rego Park, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens. These are all subway-access to the city and many are on express lines or are quick rides. I live in Forest Hills and work in Chelsea and my commute is 38 minutes door to door usually, on a local train. Express train to midtown East is about 25 minutes.

This exactly. If you'll be driving you can look more into areas like Floral Park and Douglaston which I consider to be more like LI than Queens.

I've lived in Middle Village/Sunnyside/Maspeth my whole life and I love it. Sunnyside/Woodside is so up and coming (much like Williamsburg in Brooklyn) since it's so close to the city.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

A lot of the neighborhoods people are listing are nice, but I wouldn't call them affordable.

I think it depends on what you want.

Do you want a lot of space?
How important is an easy commute?
Would you prefer a subway or LIRR commute?
Do you have many cars to park?
Do you want a quieter, more suburban area, or somewhere that may be more crwoded but will have lots of stores in walking distance

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

If you're looking for a quick commute to the city, I'd suggest Astoria. The nicest area in Astoria, IMO, is the Upper Ditmars area. It's not as chaotic as the other parts and is more residential.

I live in Astoria. It is a great commute to manhattan especially midtown. It is pricy though because of its proximity to Manhattan. You may find a cheaper apartment in Bayside but remember you will have to take the LIRR to Manhattan and possibly a subway depending on where you work. Astoria has the N/Q subway line. It's very walkable and there are a lot of restaurants, cafes and bars.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

I rented in Flushing (near Kissena Park), Woodside (between Woodside Ave. & Queens Blvd) & Sunnyside (46th St between Queens Blvd & Northern Blvd area).

I think my favorite neighborhood was Sunnyside and it was closest to the city. I was about a 2 block walk to the 7 train and there were lots of fun restaurants and bars there. I was single then though. Chat Icon

This!

Queens house prices are actually higher and you get less land, but you pay lower taxes.

I live on the Bayside/Flushing border and though the whole Bayside/Douglaston/Little Neck area is really nice, commuting into the city isn't all that. If I didn't live 4 blocks from the LIRR, I would have to take the bus to catch the 7 train and it would take me forever to get into work.

So, if you want to shorten your commute, look into the neighborhoods where public transportation is closer or more abundant.

Hey neighbor! Chat Icon

You could always drive to the LIRR station. Aside from Bayside, I think the parking is decent along the Pt. Washington branch. Speaking of parking, it's not plentiful in most areas of western Queens. In my area, there is tons of parking and of course, we all have driveways and garages.

Much of Astoria, Woodside, Sunnyside, and Forest Hills is pretty "urban." I think northeastern Queens is great because it's very suburban but definitely walkable. I am on 60x100 and pay around 5k in taxes. Come to Queens!!

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

Are you looking for a house? If so then I don't think the homes in the neighborhoods listed are affordable. If you're willing to live in a co-op or condo you can most likely find a 3 bedroom apt for just about the same price of a house in LI

Neighborhoods in Queens

I live in Whitestone/Beechhurst area. We own a co-op though. Houses in this area a expensive and on a smaller piece of land then in LI. Yes, the property taxes are cheaper.

Also, like others have said commuting into the city from here isn't that ideal. I work in midtown and take the express bus in. It takes me about an hour in the morning - sometimes more and anywhere from 1 1/2-2 hours at night - depending on traffic and there is ALWAYS traffic.

Taking the bus to main street to get on the 7 is another option, but waiting for the bus and then taking it to the last stop isn't worth it to me. You get on at the start of the line only to have to take the ride prettty much to last stop of the line to get into the city.

Re: Neighborhoods in Queens

Grew up in Middle Village, excellent place to live...would've still lived there only DH and I wanted something a little more suburban with more property..so we wound up in NJ bc LI was out of the question $$ ...miss it sometimes, especially Juniper Valley Park!
