Any Good Sam Mommies out there?

I just delivered DD there on 12/13 via c-section. I have no complaints. On my last night there I had a problem with my roomate ( DD was in the NICU so I was rarely in my room, well at one point I walked back into my room and my roomates 3 year old son was on my bed, there was gum on my pillow and he was sucking on my water bottle). I went to the nurses station and explained what happened and they immediately put me in a private room for the last night, no questions asked. I was impressed by that. I was also happy about the care my DD got in the NICU.

Long story but to try to make it brief. Had a c-section.
Got to room around 230 pm. Bed was locked so I couldn't move legs. Couldn't get someone to figure out how to unlock it until 3-4am.

Since visiting hours were till 8, when nurse came to clean me up, I had visitors. When I finally got someone back in the room, it was around 10:30 and I asked to be cleaned up and they said that staff had left already. I was a mess and with a little hassle, finally got someone to clean me up.

Took forever to get pain medication. I made the mistake of waiting the first time thinking I was ok, then the meds I had wore off. Would take anywhere from 45-60 minutes at least to get meds after I rang the bell.

The second night I had DS room in with me. Early am, he pooped so I went to change him on my bed. I had water and the towels they give you. I never got out of bed to put him with me to change him. Well when I opend his diaper and started to wipe, he started to poop. It was like I was dispensing a large chocolate Sunday at carvel. I didn't have enough paper towels to clean him and I wasn't mobile enough to maneuver out of bed and hold him etc. again, it took over 30 minutes for a nurse to come in and when I asked for help, it was like pulling teeth. She didn't understand why I couldn't change a diaper.

Think it was later that morning, had my curtain pulled, was sleeping, nurse came in, pulled back my curtain, said morning, time to get up. I was in the bed closer to the door and the sun was coming in, hitting the mirror, and then hitting me in the face. Really?

Had a hard time getting DS to latch. Most helpful person, the audiologist. Go figure.

On the day I was leaving, they brought DS in a few minutes before the breast feeding class. So I brought him back to the nursery and they asked if I fed him, said I was going to the class, said you have to feed him and told me they would let me take him to the class. I bring him to the class and am told I can't have him in there. Went to the room, tried to nurse him for a few minutes, went back to the nursey and dropped him off with a different nurse. Extremely frustrating, if I am having difficulties nursing and want to go to this class to help, how am I supposed to if you won't take my baby until I feed him?

Was a horrible experience for me.

Loved the staff on l&d. Wish I could have stayed on that floor.

Re: Any Good Sam Mommies out there?

Eh not a great experience. Just be on top of stuff like bugging people to take care of you if you need it and making sure your baby is fed properly in the nursery if you dont keep him/her in the room with you 24/7.

I had my girls at 11:57 pm so it was 2:30 before I got to my room. I was nauseas so I just wanted to sleep it off. They came in and asked if I want to see Twin 2 from the nursery for a bit (Twin 1 was in nicu). DH had left, I was neauseas so I said I wanted to sleep and Id take her in tomorrow. That was nice on their part but I was SO out of it afterwards.

Then they proceeded to come in like every half hour for something or other. BP, residents, to change iv, etc. One was something stupid like to give me a packet and ask if I know how to feed and hold babies. Um yeah I do but do you really need to ask me this NOW? Let me sleep!

They sent student nurses in to clean me up which was a nighmare because they had no clue what they were doing and I ended up getting out of bed for them to change my bed. All the while nurses were trying to change iv and were pulling the curtain open giving my neighbors family a show if they had looked my way. I ended up having such bad clots that they called my Dr and had the on call OB check me all the while the nurses were opening the curtain. Chat Icon

They took my catheter out then. Later they said that at 7pm, they would help me up to get cleaned up and dressed so they could take me to the nicu. I was still on iv. I asked at 7 and 7:30 came around and no one came. I finally got a nurse assistant and she said I would just have to wait because they were too busy with shift changes right now to help me. I was sobbing so bad because I wanted to see my DD in the nicu and felt guilty that its been so long and she hadn't met her mommy yet but I had twin 2 all day with me. I tried getting up myself but couldnt with the iv and my clothes were in the closet. My roommate was even upset for me and remembers them saying 7 so her husband went and got the nurses. They apologized and got me up but it was still an hour later.

Twin1 was finally able to bottle feed so we needed to go do her feedings and would drop twin2 off at the nursery. Twin 2 was born at 5-8 but dropped to 5-1 and was jaundice so the ped wanted her eating every 2/3 hours. She was a sleeper and needed to be woken up to eat. I fed her at 3:30 and with visiting and feeding twin 1 in the nicu they were supposed to do her next feeding. I figued they would just feed her there since her chart said 3:30. Well I get back to the nursery at almost 9:30, look at the chart and her last feeding was 3:30!! There was even a napkin saying 3:30 on her isolet the nurses put there to communicate to each other. They nurse tried blaming ME that I was supposed to tell her to fed her. I said they should KNOW and said they would normally bring the baby to my room to feed but obviously didn't. So I was obviously upset that my 5-1 lb 3 day old jaundice baby wasn't fed for 6 hours because I had to be in the nicu with her sister. Thanks for the twin mommy guilt, Good Sam! We reported to my nurse and the head nurse got involved. When I was picking my DD up from the nicu they said they would call me to discuss that fri but never called me.

Then there was the issue with the nicu nurse who was coughing up a storm in the nicu and on my baby while changing her leeds. I told the head nicu nurse and she was put on a different job. But REALLY? No one there sees her coughing and shes dealing with babies with compromised immune and respiratory systems?? The nicu was the reason I wanted to deliver there.

So needless to say, IF I have another, it will be at Southside.

Hated it. Had ds 1 there August 2010 had such a horrible experience with them AND South Bay ob/gyn that I switched to Stony Brook midwives for my second and delivered at Stony Brook where I had the best experience...this was March 2012. I live in Amityville so Stony Brook was far for me but so worth it.

Re: Any Good Sam Mommies out there?

Just gave birth there and have nothing but the most amazing things to say about everyone there!!!!! I am so thankful to have delivered at Good Sam. I thought they were exceptional!!!! I thought they went over beyond in a lot of ways and noticed that they had a lot of systems in place to ensure that mommy and baby were safe, happy and taken care of while in the hospital and tried to give them all the tools and resources necessary for when you went home with baby. this my my first baby and i had never been in a hospital as a patient at all so i was very nervous.

Re: Any Good Sam Mommies out there?

I had my son there and the only bad thing I have to say is that the pillow sucked lol that's it. Once my hubby brought my pillow.....it was great. The nurses were amazing. There aren'tmany people that I've seen have a bad experience. I think its much much better than South side that's for sure!!

Any Good Sam Mommies out there?

I had my DS there last year. I had an issue with a nurse or two but overall it was fine. Day nurses are better than nights.

My roommates were the worst. But that isn't good SAMs fault.
