What are the pros. cons. of holding DC back? I do not know what to do. Chat Icon

DC is in preschool now. BD is Nov. 20th.

No delayed issues. Socially is fine, academically is my concern.

What, academically, is your concern? I've taught kindergarten before and held children back there, if necessary..if you describe what you're worried about with DC, maybe I can help...sometimes the "gift of time" does help and with your son having a late birthday, he won't be an entire year older, if that makes sense..I'd have to know more in order to tell you the pros and cons..

Re: Holding Child Back

I would hold him back, I live in Va and the birthday cut off here is the end of September! I teach 1st grade and parents here are worried about their August babies not being ready for school!! If you lived in DC the cut off is the end of August. Most states cut offs are the beginning or end of September.

Re: Holding Child Back

Not sure where I stand as a teacher, but my birthday is Nov. 16th, and I turned 6 at the beginning of Kindergarten. I always felt like I had an advantage being one of the oldest. A year makes a difference, and I liked being one the oldest in the class-I was 18, almost 19 when I started college, as opposed to being 17. It makes a difference too in terms of when, during HS, you start driving. I had my license earlier than my peers, so it was easier for me to get a job, get to school, etc. Just a thought.

I was held back in 2nd grade. I was in special education from 1-3 grade.

My has mentioned that they should have done it K. My situation is a tad different because i was such a sickly kid. By 2nd grade I was very upset about it because of my friends going on without me.

If you don't think he's ready hold him back...it's better to do it early rather than 1st or 2nd grade. As a first grade teacher I see kids all the time I wish had repeated kindergarten, and even if I kill myself to get them through and reading, etc. ....they usually sink in 2nd grade! They are just not ready.

Re: Holding Child Back

You didn't mention if DC was a boy or a girl. If your child is a boy, I would recommend holding him back. I teach kindergarten & I have seen many children (boys & girls) pushed ahead who would have benefitted from another year of preschool. There is an excellent book called Why Gender Matters that really goes into detail regarding the educational experiences of boys and girls. If your child is a girl, talk to her preschool teacher & see what he/she recommends. I know my district has a pre-kindergarten screening in May where incoming students meet with the reading specialists and teachers, and we get to see where the students are at, academically and socially. If your district does something similar, you can wait and see how that goes before you make a decision. Good luck!
