DS, 6 mths soon has just cut two teeth. today at his dr. visit she said I should start brushing his teeth is this normal to do at this age? seems like brushing his teeth would irritate his gums

We started with the silicone toothbrush that goes on your finger, then switched to the regular toothbrush around 6-8 months. DS had a lot of teeth by then.

Brushing a 6mths old teeth?
Our ped said the same once DD got teeth in. I've been using the finger brush and it came in a set with flouride free toothpaste. I brush her teeth and gums and she LOVES it!

It won't irritate their gums really. Some babies (my DS for one) liked the feeling. Just be careful when they learn to bite!! Thats when I switched from the silicone finger brush to a small regular brush. You can wipe down the rest of the gums with cool water too, gets the rest of the BM/formula off of them.

Teeth are teeth! Even though they eventually fall put you don't want them coming out too early, especially due to bottle rot!! Just get the baby fluoride free toothpaste. Another benefit of starting early is to get them used to it, then they will hopefully be less likely to fight it as they get older.

Our dentist said to start brushing when there were 4 on top & 4 on bottom. I don't know where she got this number from...
It really worked developmentally: he loved it at that age & still does!

Brushing a 6mths old teeth?
I bought DS a super soft toddelr tooth brush. Dr suggested it. One to start cleanign his teeth but 2 to get DS used to an actual toothbrush.
DS LOVES it!!!!! Smiles and laughs through it.
