ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
I went for a pedi and an older gentleman and his wife came in and sat next to me. His toenails were all fungus..yellow, thick, peeling, cracked... and the pedicurist worked on him without issue.
I keep thinking of it. I did notice that each water bin had a clear plastic bag wrapped around the bin and they'd throw it out after it was used, but the plastic did not cover the jets, obviously.
Is this common that people go with atrocious fungus feet? I figured they would be turned down or something.

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
There's a chance it wasn't fungus, and just a "side effect" of getting older. That happened to my grandfather.
That being said, I hate going for pedicures now because there are some funguses that can't be spotted easily and it makes me nauseous to think of getting fungus on my feet.

Oh really? I didn't know that. It looked just like fungus you see on commercials.
Do they turn people away though that do have real fungus?

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
Probably how I got it last summer. It was mild and went away after 6 months of treatment, but I will never get a salon pedi again.
PSA- the fungal infection I picked up didn't even look like a fungus, it looked like a scratch on my nail. A few weeks later it was on another nail, then I became suspicious. The doctor that treated me advised never going to a salon to get a pedi unless you bring your own tub to soak your feet and all your own tools.

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
Ugh. I have had a chronic toenail fungus forever now and I won't go for pedis because of it. I would never want to expose someone else to it. Nasty.
Having said that, my podiatrist told me that no matter how well they scrub and disinfect those tubs the fungus and bacteria can live in the jets- which are nearly impossible to get clean. He recommended only going to salons and spas that don't use jetted tubs. Just basins. It's hard to find though.
I think once this toe finally clears, I still won't be going. It skeeves me out and it's so hard to get rid of a toe nail fungus!

Come Fall- see a ped and get oral meds.
I was in same position and it affected practically my whole right foot. I took Lamisil. it worked AMAZING! They take a blood test to make sure all is ok, esp your liver and then retest it while you are on it.
it was the only thing that help. I recommend it highly.

I was going to get a pedicure tonight too! A few years ago I had a plantars wart---never had anything like that before and the podiatrist said it was from a pedicure! I still go but now I'm thinking of doing my own tonight....

I just wish they wouldn't soak your feet. I know working on feet is gross and all but soaking them in that big tub just skeeves me out so bad!

Lamisil worked great for me! I took it for 3 months and now it's perfect.

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
You can go and get a "pedicure" without having to dip your foot in those gnarly tubs.
I'll scrub my own feet at home, and then go to the salon and have them moisturize and paint my nails....and yes, I bring my own tools.

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
I had a nasty plantar wart, which in fact is the HPV virus. I brought my DD in for a pedi and they asked if I wanted one. I explained about my wart and they said that it wasn't an issue for them. I am assuming if you are willing to pay, they are willing to do it.

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
I'm sure most places with do a pedicure for anyone who's willing to pay.
That being said FIL's nails are yellow and look like he has fungus but it's actually a side effect of medication he takes....so hopefully that's the case!

Same here: my grandfather had the same thing. Definitely not a fungus but because he was elderly.

I swear the Board of Health would love to know that! These places are so unregulated it is disgusting!

I won't go for them anymore after hearing multiple stories about gross things like fungus. I just do them myself at home. Saves me money too.

I am dying for a pedi this season but the last time I went get my nails done I overheard a woman tell the tech. that her fungus still hasn't cleared up and they still worked on her.
It really grossed me out.

You know some people are just so freakin selfish! I haven't gone for a pedi in forever because of my fungus. I know these money hungry a-holes will work on me too- they don't give a cr@p at health codes, etc- but I wouldn't want to spread this to anyone else.
Then I hear stories like this of people who just NEED to get that pedicure so damn bad that they go and infect everyone else. Do your own damn toes!!! Are you that lazy???

Re: ew. guy had nail fungus at the salon..
my toe nails are yellowing b/c of the dark polish i keep on them most of the time. that is a common side effect of wearing dark polish on toes, and then keeping your feet in shoes. however, that probably wasnt this older gentleman's problem.
nails yellow with age too. might not necessarily be fungal.

fungus and bacteria can live in the jets- which are nearly impossible to get clean. ! I don't get them too much , but when I do I always ask them NOT to turn the jets on. I also ask them to clean he tub in frint of me , I don't care if they already cleaned it after the previous customer.
