BTDT Mom's who had an epidural the 1st time.....

Are you planning on getting one for the 2nd+ time? I am highly considering NOT getting an epi this time. My back has a sore spot where I got my epi the last time, plus I'm fairly sure that my epi got turned down while I was pushing, so I feel like I did it without it last time (yes, wishful thinking, I know!)

Are there any alternatives to getting an epi?

I had a spinal and with the extreme problems I had last time there is no way in hell I will get a spinal or epidural again. I have asked them to knock me out if I need a c-section. (My husband has fully agreed to not be in the operating room if it comes to this.) They aren't screwing with my spine again!

I had no issues with my Epi last time, but I'm considering doing without one. I won't make the decision till I'm in labor.

Probably not because it didn't work.

I wanted to go natural the first time, but caved around 7cm. I know it probably didnt work as well because I was so far along, but I still want to try all natural again.

Can you share what some of your problems were with the epidural?

I will be getting it again and the only difference is I want it apon arrival!! I waited way too long last time and suffered when I really didn't need to. They did turn mine down at the end and I had terrible pressure and pain during delivery but I trust they did what they felt needed to be done.

I'm going to do my best not to. I really wanted to go natural the first time but wound up getting one because I was exhausted & was hooked up to so many different things (internal monitor, amnio infusion, IV, etc) that I wasn't allowed to labor out of bed...I had taken Bradley classes & I think that being stuck in bed really hurt me. If the situation's similar/the same I'll get it again, but if not I'd really like not to.

Re: BTDT Mom's who had an epidural the 1st time.....

I just shared this on the other thread:

I am going to try to go without drugs this time, only because I had an epi with DS and it stopped working, made me nauseous and gave me really bad heartburn. It only helped with the contractions for about 2 hours before it began wearing off. They kept trying to give me more and put me on my side but nothing help. I have not taken any classes, but I pretty much had a "drug-free" experience with my last. DH and I did rent all the Laugh and Learn videos from the library, I guess they helped a little, but when you are in that moment, I think everything kind of goes out the window. You just do what you have to to get the baby out!

In addition to these problems, my neck bothered me for an entire year. I do not know if that was from the actual epi or the pushing. 5 visits to a chiro and it was better.

My statement is not to scare anyone out of an epi, it works great for some, just not for me. Who knows if the pain becomes to intense I may suffer again through the crappy side effects. It only helped for contractions, during the actual birth I felt EVERYTHING!!!

I plan on getting one. Although it was turned down so I could push - it gave me relief to rest during hours of labor before the pushing started.

Re: BTDT Mom's who had an epidural the 1st time.....

Loved my epi and would never even think about going without.

My epi was delayed a bit because I was on blood thinners and had to wait.....my contractions were bad enough before I got the epi...would never want to think about the pain without one.

I don't have anything against them but I'm going to try and go longer without one next time so see if labor progresses faster. I had bad back labor but I also let them force me to sit in a chair and be monitored instead of telling them to eff off so I could walk and be more comfortable Chat Icon

I had my epi within 1 hour of my water breaking and already I was DONE with the pain! I do agree that when they lowered it during pushing i pretty much thought I was doing it completely naturally bc of how painful it STILL was, but I will 120% get it again! Then again, I didn't have issues with it after birth, so I'm sure that may have left an impression on you.

Long story short: my spinal (different from the epidural, but both are injected into the spine) was injected in the wrong area. I have permanent damage, amongst other problems that occurred.

I hated the process of getting my epidural - the anesthesiologist was horribly rude to me and yelling at me and I felt like I was shocked by a zillion electrical bolts down my right leg that I actually jumped up from the bed -
But loved how having the epi felt so yes, ( I was able to relax and not stress so much) I will be getting an epi again!!!!!!
I did not feel a thing when DD was being born - I just made sure to push with all my might out of fear of them turning it down Chat Icon

Re: BTDT Mom's who had an epidural the 1st time.....

I had an epidural w DS and it was Godsend! Unfortunately I had trouble pushing him out bc I was exhausted from 30+ hours of labor and then had him vacuumed out bc the epidural wasnt allowing me to push correctly. I did have some lingering back pain that still comes and goes since then With DD 20 months after DS was born, I wanted the epidural desperately bc i was in such pain but I got to the hospItal too late and DD was born very quickly which they say happens often with subsequent deliveries. I had her drug free not by choice but I am so grateful for that. I felt so much better physically, mentally and emotionally post partum and in comparison to after my first delivery. I also noticed a big difference in the babies. My son slept a lot after he was born and was hard to wake and a lazy nurser. Whereas DD was so alert and nursed like a champ. Of course, these were my personal experiences and there were other factors that played into having a more positive experience the second time but a definite contributing factor was not having any drugs during the labor and delivery. If we go for a third I'm definitely going drug free again. It hurts and is the worst pain I've ever felt but only temporary!

I am not going to get an EPI this time. I got the EPI at 7cm and I felt NOTHING for 15 minutes! I said I needed more they kept trying to push some through but it just wasnt working for me. I felt EVERYTHING!

I had the WORST back pain ever afterwards from it, I just dont think it was worth it for me. I guess ask me again when I am in labor Chat Icon

I am pretty sure I am going to try to go without it next time. Mine was administered twice and in the end it only numbed my right thigh. Apparently I have too much muscle tissue in my back. I got it at 4 cm but progressed very quickly to 10. I just hope I go quick again!!!

My epi hurt ALOT going in. It actually was more painful than my contractions. The epi was great once it was in - it just took the anesthesiologist forever to get it in. I only had the epi going for 20 minutes and then DD was born so I am seriously considering not taking it next time.
