Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"
The food on the lawn thing is gross (sorry!)
We leave music on for our dogs, why not? I think it helps keep them relaxed while we're gone, ya know, not worried or anything. It's just routine now.
Never would have thought shoes on/off would be such a debate!

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"
I grew up in a house that had a living room and dining room I never stepped foot in unless it was Christmas...and my wedding day.
Made fun of my mother for years. We used to tell her we were going to buy red velvet ropes and section off that part of the house.
Guess what?
Got married...living in my house 14 years...we NEVER go into my living room and dining room. Only for Thanksgiving and a few random events.
Otherwise, never! Most of you have been my customers on this site...you've been in my living room more than my own kids have!
We have a big family room with a TV. My living room has nothing remotely attractive for kids. It's beige couches and Lenox pieces. Kids don't go anywhere near those rooms.
And they never even wanted to.

Things people do at their home you find
Shoes off thing is a big deal for me. We don't wear them in the house and 90% of the people that come to our house know this and leave their shoes by the front door. We don't use the decorative towels in the bath room, they are for guests only. I don't have a formal living room. If I did, I am sure we wouldn't use it everyday.

Posted by MorningCuppaCoffee they put a lot of their leftover table scraps out on their lawn.
I live in an apartment with a shared front lawn area and my neighbor does this. He throws on the grass anything from clam shells to steak bones. IT DRIVES ME INSANE!!!!!

For all the towel issues -you would hate my house. The decorative ones hanging up DO NOT USE. They are just for decoration. I would be furious if someone used them. They are really embroidered and just for show. I have both pretty paper towels and a regular towel in a holder on the counter. Either of those are fine to use. I wash the towel after guests leave and if no guests are here it is washed at least weekly.
See, I'd do it all wrong. I'd use the decorative ones thinking you put them out especially for me to use. That's what I do in my house! So funny how people interpret things differently!
Me too! I'd use the "fancy" ones because I'd assume they were for guest. You can all come to my house! Leave your shoes. Use the towels. I really don't give a shit

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"
My mom used to (and still does) open all of the windows and blinds in the front of the house to the same height so it looked uniform out front. We didn't have central AC, just fans, and it didn't matter if the sun was blaring into my room, and I was sweating balls, we couldn't open the windows or blinds anymore than they were bc "it wont look nice from the outside."

My mom actually did rope off the living room! As a family, we only ate in the kitchen or watched TV in the den. The dining room and living room were off limits to us!
I would like to be a "shoes off" household but I have a large dog so really don't see the point.

Yikes
When I clean my toilet and there is that occasional splash onto my floor I go into panic mode ! Must bleach and mop and bleach again immediately!

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"
I don't like taking my shoes off, but that's what's done here. I just carry a pair of socks in my bag if I'm going to someone's house here. People think I'm weird for having people over in my apartment with shoes on!
My In-Laws don't use napkins at dinner time. They don't put them out on the table or anything. I always have to get up and get them. I think that's weird. My MIL always has tissues in her bra, so she just uses those. I guess that's why they are never put out .

I get pissed when people ask me to take my shoes off at their homes.
For some reason it really really bothers me to look at people walking around in socks.
I guess I just don't understand the need to go over the top to protect floors and such. Houses are for living, its not a museum.

OMG When we got new windows in our house and they had those little security locks that let you open the windows about 3" and still be "locked" I was in LOVE! Now every window in the house could "match" in open-ness.

Things people do at their home you find
The no shoe thing is weird to me.
People who don't keep tissues in their house. What the hell are you supposed to use (that's soft!) to blow your nose??
People who don't use their front door (go through the garage or back/side door) This only makes sense to me if they park in their garage otherwise strange.
People who don't take in the mail everyday. My landlords do this and it's so annoying because by the end of the week I'm stuck sifting through a TON of mail to see if I have anything.
People who feel the need to keep their AC at a ridiculously cold temperature and conversely the heat as well.

The no shoe is crazy to me. We are a laid back house and can do just about anything as a visitor and we wouldn't care.

My kids and I don't wear shoes in our home. DH does what he wants. He knows I get annoyed, but, he won't change. LOL I NEVER ask guests to remove their shoes. I want them to be comfortable. They can if they want, but, I'd never ask. I simply vacuum and mop the next day.
As soon as everyone is up and dressed in the mornings, I go around and open every blind. I love the sunlight coming in. Windows, some are open, some are closed. LOL I'm more concerned with the blinds, from both inside and out.

We don't wear shoes in our house and ask our guests to take them off. It's not to protect the floors, although I guess that is an added benefit because we have hardwoods. It's becuase shoes are filthy and we have a baby and toddler who play all over the floor. Even when they're older we'll still be shoes-free. Think about what you step in on a daily basis, then you track that into your home? That's really gross to me.
In many parts of the world this is the norm. I'm actually surprised that more people don't do it here.

Things people do at their home you find
In the UK most people don't wash the dish soap off of the fishes after washing them, they go right into the dishrack all soapy and sudsy. It's gross, who wants a cup of tea with suds in it. Most people here don't have dishwashers or tumble dryers, they have laundry hanging on the radiators in their house.
