Things people do at their home you find "strange"

We were talking about this last night at dinner with my IL's.

DH often finds a lot of things my family does "strange" because they are not from LI.

Anyways, we went to my sister's for Thanksgiving and to save money on garbage service and having to haul things to the dump (you have to pay out of pocket there), they put a lot of their leftover table scraps out on their lawn. Chat Icon

I guess some would consider this composting, but when they were telling us how they've had coyotes in their yard recently, we were like, well, duh, then don't leave out a leftover turkey carcass!!

That's not strange- it's downright unsanitary. I understand composting, but leaving food out to attract vermin is GROSS. Chat Icon

I find people making guests remove their shoes strange- but we all know how THAT discussion turns out on LIF.Chat Icon

Yeah I would NOT be amused by that if I was their neighbors. It attracts animals! Raccoons, coyotes, etc--NO THANK YOU.

The only thing my family does thats strange is that we have all these foods that no one has ever heard of. My mom is from a very small town in Sardinia and they have all these foods that are native to her town...but aside from that, I don't think we do anything totally weird...

The shoes thing. I get it if you or your kid has asthma or some other illness where you need to be spotless but what if someone had some really funky foot problem and were really uncomfy with taking off their shoes, I don't think it's fair to make them take them off or to even ask because that's putting them in a weird spot... I'm saying this AND we are a shoes off household. Most people notice that we don't walk in the door with our shoes on and they will take lead but if they don't then I don't ask.

A lot of my friends do this but not us, the whole second living room where you aren't allowed in it. I think it's odd to buy an entire set of expensive furniture and decorate an entire room but never ever use it.

Married people who each have their own rooms or I know of friends parents who don't love each other anymore, date other people yet are still married and living in the same house just in different rooms and never talk because they don't want the hassle and expense of a divorce.

People who don't recycle anything

I always find it strange when people leave lights and tv's on in rooms when no one is in there.

I am guilty of thisChat Icon DH yells at me about it, I turn the TV on in thr living room, then I go take a shower, go back and finish watching a movie, then go into the kitchen to do dishes and still leave it on..I only turn it off when I go to sleep in the bedroom. Bad habit, I know. I grew up with the TV noise in the background so when the house is too quiet, I feel weird...Chat Icon

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"

Growing up in my parent's house we had/they have a formal living room. It only gets used for guests. Same thing for their dining room as well. We live in our entire home.

We take our shoes off in our home. I did not do that growing up. I think it is a lot more sanitary to keep your shoes off. I have guest slippers in almost every size from 7-15 (We have big feet in my family). If you had a foot fungus I could see why you would not want to take your shoes off. I never ask workmen to remove their shoes.

The reason we are a shoes off house is for:
1. cleanliness - there is a lot of dirt, mud, gunk, poop, and any other bad stuff you stepped on during the day on the bottom of your shoes. If you sit on the floor or other people sit on your floor do you want your hands to touch what is on the ground outside? I feel like we are so much healthier by being a shoes off home. You still need to clean.

2. We have new carpets. I don't want the junk from shoes on our floors. We don't eat in rooms that have carpets.

3. Since everyone's shoes are near the front door (in storage bins) I never have to run around to find a pair of misplaced shoes. Ok never is a strong word, perhaps it is more like once a month or less.

We are a shoes off house mostly b/c of cultural reasons. I was never a shoes off person until I moved in with DH. DH is from Hawaii where it is very customary to remove your "slippers" before entering a person's home. Now that I am in a shoes off house, I find it much cleaner this way. DH works in the city and I wouldn't want DS rolling all over the nasty subway stuff he treks through during the day.

I never understood rooms that were for show only!

I do this sometimes because noise from outside sometimes scare my dog and he bark. The TV noise help cover up the noise that way he doesn't disturb my neighbors by constantly barking

leaving shades open or not having shades at all so everyone can see everything that is going on in your house. I swear you can see my neighbor's every move from across the street because they have no shades!

They're just cutting out the middle step. The food goes in there eventually, anyway..... Chat Icon

Same here. Like last week, I had a whole gallon of milk that was bad before the due date (it was really bad if even I could tell!) I wasn't about to pour a gallon of chunky milk down my sink and have it stink up my kitchen. I flushed it down the toilet.

My inlaws cook in the garage when they have huge parties.

That is strange, but I can see how it could be convienent. What do they cook on? Do they have a stove in there?

I always find it strange when people don't keep tissues in their house & use toilet paper to blow their nose. Equally starnge to me is that my in laws keep tissues in the kitchen, living room & den, but not the bathroom.

I also find it strange that my inlaws don't ever buy paper napkins, but they use cloth napkins, or paper towels.

I have never heard of dumping food down the toilet. Won't that clog it? I have occasionally dumped really rotten milk, but I learned that from DH.

Re: Things people do at their home you find "strange"

We are pretty much a shoes off house. DH and I both grew up in shoes off houses so we more did it out of habit. Plus when we had carpet it kept it cleaner, ie no muddy or wet shoes on it. But when people come over we dont make them take them off. Most people were pretty good about wiping off feet or just taking them off but I didnt care if they wore them.. thats what a vaccum and mop are for!
