Breastfeeding while pregnant...
Well, I just found out the I am pregnant again, and am in complete shock. (Hence the new name...ha) We were sort of TTC but, I really didn't have any idea what was going on with my body this month (I did get lovely AF back, even while bf'ing.)
Does anyone know if it is okay for me to keep nursing my dc?
Wow. That's really all that I can think right now. DH doesn't even know yet, as he left today for a business trip overseas...I'm mad at myself for taking the test, to be honest, but I REALLY swore it would be negative. And I was taking it more or less to just stop my mind from wondering...

First of all.... Congrats!
Second of all, yes you can breastfeed while pregnant. DS is 13.5 months and still nursing 3-4 times a day and has been ever since I found out I was pregnant 4 months ago. I talked to my midwife about and she said that it was absolutely fine as long as I make sure to keep myself nourished because it's the baby growing, the baby nursing then you who gets the nutrients, in that order. The only problem that could happen is that your baby could self ween because some pregnant ladies start to produce less milk and it starts to taste different because of your hormones. I told my midwife that I was okay with this because I was planning to ween DS at 12 months but if I didn't have to force it because he would probably stop on his own because I was pregnant then that would be great. Well, it didn't work. I still have plenty of milk and apparently either the taste didn't change or he doesn't care because he's still on me all the time lol. I decided to just let him ween when he is ready or 2 yrs old, which ever comes first.

My doctor told me I have to stop. However, I researched it on different blogs and really find what the pp said....that you CAN contuinue. So although I'm beginning to wean, I haven't completely stopped yet at 8 weeks.

My ped (who is also a LC) said it was perfectly ok to continue to BF while pregnant but many babies self wean because the pregnancy hormones affect the taste of the milk.
I got pg with #2 when DS was 13 months old and was EBF at the time. I continued to BF him although I did notice a drop in my supply. DS ended up self weaning at 16.5 months.
ETA: Congratulations to the OP!!! Happy and Healthy 9 months

My ob said to stop but my perinatologist said it was perfectly healthy to keep going. SO I kept nursing until ds self weaned at 14 months and i was 10 weeks pregnant.

As far as I know, the only reason not to is that BF can cause uterus contractions, the same contractions that you can get when having sex.
I think if your okayed for sex, you're probably ok to BF.

I BF while I was pregnant!
I was told it is an old wives tale that it wasnt ok to nurse while pregnant!
Your supply takes a hit and it hurst like H E L L when they first latch...but I continued to do it until my DD was a year old and I was about 3 months pregnant!

I nursed while I was preggo until it turned and began to taste different and honestly everytime I saw my OB she would tell me "you really have to stop- someone is hurting here, there is no way to keep your DD, your baby inside you AND you healthy" meaning that someone is losing here and its not fair. SO i forced myself to wean DD even though I felt guilty about it (that the baby was already causing her to take a back seat) but in the end, that was all me. I feel confident it was for the best.

Yea. He said to stop bc it causes the uterus to contract ... It is very difficult to stop though!

I'm sorry you were given such false information from a trusted medical provider. How sad that you were guilted into unecessarily weaning. No one would be hurt by your continued nursing. In fact, there are several studies and anecdotes that show that it can be emotionally beneficial for both mom and nursling during a time of drastic change. As previously mentionned, as long as you were not on pelvic rest, any uterine contractions caused by nursing (which may or may not happen) are the same intensity as an orgazm and are not risky in a normal pregnancy.

My SIL was nursing each of her kids when she got PG with the next ones. She has been a nursing machine for 5 years straight, 3 kids.

Congrats!!!! You can BF while pregnant and lots of women continue to tandem nurse once the baby is born!

I did, with my doctor's support. I think the only time a dr might tell you to stop is if you are prone to early contractions/early labor, because bf supposedly can stimulate contractions, much the way nipple stimulation supposedly can. i never had a contraction while BFing. I BF'd until my supply dried about at about 5 months pregnant. My supply dipped at around 3 mths preggo, so between 3 and 5 mths I had to supplement with formula.

Thanks so much ladies. I have a feeling that my doctor will want me to stop, as my pregnancies are high risk, but not due to anything concerning contractions. I was actually planning on weaning in a few weeks after we get back from vacation. I'm hoping to still do that, but I guess we'll see what happens.

This happened to me twice...yes twice. It was a bit demanding on me because I personally was feeling tired, etc. BUT I still did it and survived:) You can definately do it, just take your vitamins and try to eat as healthy as you can.
From my son to daughter I nurse from when DS was 7/8 months until 10 months.
From daughter to last DS I nurse frome when DD was 7 months to 11 months and then she went straight to milk.
Good luck and do what fits you and your life. There are tons of opinions but it is indeed safe.
