Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I am 6 weeks pregnant and still breastfeeding my DD. She'll be 2 next month so I want to wean her anyway, but the doctor said I definitely shouldn't be breastfeeding while pregnant because it causes your uterus to contract. I didn't see anything online about it not being compatible, but of course I'm taking her advice and weaning DD asap.
It's unfortunately the only way I can get her to nap and to bed, so I'm terrified about how this is going to work out. I guess I have to wean her cold turkey and I'm nervous about the impact that will have on her.
Any advice greatly appreciated!

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I'm sorry but your dr gave you wrong advice...it is perfectly ok to breastfeed while pregnant. I breastfed for 6-7 months after I found out I was pregnant!
There is a support forum for mothers who "tandem breastfeed" on
La Leche League Mother - to - Mothers forum
You have to join and sign in to see that particular section bec it is private to subscribers only! But def worth checking out!
It is more difficult bec your supply takes a hit and it hurts when they latch! But def not dangerous!
Good luck!

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I BF while pregnant for a while. I weaned my son when he was 15 months old. I just couldn't take it anymore. It also happened that he weaned after a stomach bug and didn't want to nurse. What I started to do was cut out one feeding at a time. This meant that at points, I had to go into the kitchen or somewhere else while DH tended to DS. My DS LOVED to nurse and was at the point of picking up my shirt, even in public, when he wanted it. Eventually, DS didn't ask to nurse in the evening and I didn't offer. The morning nursing session was the hardest. For me, Aidan got sick and I had to basically force him to nurse. I realized that I shouldn't offer it to him and I didn't. He asked for it about 2 weeks later to which I replied it was "all gone." That was the end of it,

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I Breastfed our 2 year old during pregnancy and all was fine! Like you it was mainly before nap and bedtime. As my pregnancy progressed DC was nursing only 1x per day- every other day - every few days and by the end of my over due pregnancy not nursing at all, self weaned... Nap - bedtime worked out fine too

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
Thank you, these replies are really helpful. Nothing I read online said it was harmful, and that it was totally fine, that the concern was more about the toll it takes on the mom, the supply, etc. It isn't taking a toll on me at all, and while I have barely any supply, she's nursing more for comfort at this point than nutrition.
I knew I needed to/wanted to wean her pretty soon anyway, I just wasn't prepared for TODAY to be the day, and for it to be cold turkey.
I tried not nursing for the nap just before and it was a disaster. I don't know how we'll get through this.
I will sign up for that LLL forum.

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I will be weaning DS soon and I will be offering him milk and cutting out one feeding at a time. I will probably start with his second am feeding and see how that goes. He drinks water from the sippy cup, so I'm hoping he will like milk.
DD self weaned, so she was easy.

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
You can breastfeed during pregnancy, but interestingly two of my friends are pregnant and they both were BF'ing, but they said their sons stopped because (to quote one of them) her BF son who is 2 told her that her breast milk tasted like wee wee and poopoo.

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant? And weaning advice?
I was exclusively nursing DD1 (who was 4.5 months at the time) when I got pregnant the second time. I continued to nurse without supplmenting any formula until she was 7 months. At that time, i noticed a drop in my supply. I nursed and supplemented until 9 months, at which point she self weaned because I had practically nothing left.

My maternal fetal specialist told me that the unborn baby gets the nutrients first, then the nursing baby and then the mother. But since we live in a developed country as long as you eat enough everyone will be happy and healthy. He also said as long as there is no history of preterm labor the contractions that are caused by nursing are harmless. I nursed until 10 weeks pregnant with the blessing of my MFM. Ds self weaned or I would have gone longer.
OP nurse as long as you are comfortable. The taste of the milk will change and most nursling's wean because of it. That's what happened with ds. As for the ob saying to wean. My MFM said bf'ing creates such a special bond between mother and child. And there is no reason to suddenly rip away the breast and risk the bond just because of a new pregnancy. He said ds would self wean and he was right. My Ob had suggested I wean too but i figured a MFM was more versed in the subject then the OB.
