Re: Results from quad screen

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had the quadscreen done with DS, and it came back that he has Trisomy 18, I think it was a 1 in 10 chance.

I waited until I was 21 weeks to have the more in depth sono to check for markers. If he had markers, I was going to have the amnio at 24 weeks. (He didn't have any markers so I didn't do the amnio).

The quadscreen can have very odd results. The first child I had, I didn't have the quadscreen at 16 weeks, but found out he had anecephaly at 20 weeks. So we had decided to do it with DS-and of course, it came back bad.

What comforted me (somewhat) was that those 1 out of 10 chances also told me that more importantly, 9 out of 10, my child did NOT have Trisomy 18.

I agree with LB... wait for the Level 2 (that should be soon, right?) and then if there is any question I would get the amnio. Like you, I wouldn't terminate but I would need to know as much as possible as soon as I could. Hoping everything is OK with your baby! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you are going to make yourself crazy worrying, I would do the amnio sooner than later.

I'm sorry you now have this worry... My friend had a similar scare and was preparing to have a child with special needs. She didn't risk the amnio because she knew she would keep the baby. The day her baby was born, he was absolutely fine.

I don't know if that story helps at all, but I wanted to share. In the meantime, you, your dh and your baby are in my prayers. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you. I just don't want that moment in the delivery room to be when I find out. I feel like before I ask is it a girl or a boy, I'll be asking if the baby has DS. I just think I need some time to know before the delivery now that I know my risk is 1 in 19.

I appreciate hearing this though

So sorry you are going through this. Have you spoken to a genetic counselor about your testing options? They can give you all the info, go over genetics and family history and help you make an informed decision. I found it to be benefical for us.
If I remember correctly, there are laws in NY state about how late an amnio can be performed, I'm no expert on the subject, but I do recall the counselor saying we had to have to done by a certain week bc of state regulations.

I wish you the best and you'll be in my prayers. Chat Icon

I'm so sorry that your results for the quad screening weren't better. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Like you, I would wait until after the level II scan to see what, if any, markers might be identified during that scan. Then, if there are any continuing concerns, I would go ahead and have the amnio done as soon as I could. I also would never terminate but I know that I wouldn't be able to wait until 36 or 38 weeks without knowing for sure.

I'm praying that is won't come to that for you Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would try to bump up the Level II and get that done first. If the results weren't good I would definetely do an amnio. But I agree with a PP, I think they only do amnio's up to a certain point.

It's a great sign (IMO) that there were no markers found at other sonos!

Re: Results from quad screen

I had worrysome results based on my triple screen and decided to request that my Level II was performed by a perinatologist in the hospital. I also opted to have the quad screen testing done as well. We saw one soft marker at the Level II (short nasal bone) and the perinatologist did not recommend an amnio based on that marker and my test results. He felt that if I did want the amnio for peace of mind, based on my apprehensions about it and the fact that we did not want to consider termination, we should opt to do it later in pregnancy (he recommended 36 weeks) so that if it did induce labor, we could deliver then with minimal complications. I did not opt for it in the end, and my dd is healthy.

Re: Results from quad screen

I hate hate hate hate these tests! They cause so much worry. My results were terrible, with both pregnancies. Both, thank god, turned out to be false positives, but the worry and the wait are enough to kill a person.

For me, we knew early enough that we did the CVS, termination wasn't an option for me either, but I had to know what was going on. I had faith that my doctors knew what they were doing, and in the end all was fine. So obviously if I were in your position I would get the amnio right away, but that is just me, my personality etc.

stupid blood tests.

ETA: I know so many people that had questionable results and everything was fine. Having been where you are twice I can say knowing that, and even knowing the chances were so high everything was fine, I still was worried sick. Being stressed like that isn't good for baby either, so do whatever will put your mind most at ease. Chat Icon
