flu and H1N1 shot, are you getting it?
My job is offering this combined shot against flu and H1N1 and I am debating what to do. I would get flu one, but not so happy about H1N1. I know I am not prego yet, but since I am actively trying, I want to be careful. I asked a nurse at work if they have something special for pregos, she said they have "almost" mercury free vaccine, but it is also combined. She said that vaccine still has traces of mercury. What to do? thanks

i have never gotten one in the past, but was considering it this year. However, I was going to check with my gyn first. I actually have to call them now, I'll post the answer.

My first doc appointment is Nov 3... if he tells me to get it then i will... but ive never gotten it before so i definitely wouldnt do it on my own.

Yes, I'm getting the flu shot. There is nothing different or bad about the H1N1 portion.
The flu shot is made up of a few viral strains that "they" think will be most prevalent this year. The H1N1 portion is just another one of the viral strains.

thanks for your opinions girls.
last year was the first year i got the flu shot and i have to say that it was the first year i DID NOT come down with horrible flu. So I assume it worked. that is why i am thinking of getting it this year again.

this year was the first time i got the flu shot w/ the H1N1 vaccine...they offered it at my job also.
i told the nurse i was ttc and i wasnt sure if i was pregnant or not so she gave me the no mercury one...not sure if it was no mercury or low mercury...either way its better than the regular flu shot

Ditto that. There is really nothing to be frightened about in getting the flu shot, but getting the FLU while you're pg, that's a real danger. You'll get overheated (from fever), dehydrated, won't be able to keep food down... that's not good at all for a developing baby.

agreed. My ob recommmended I get it. I got it today. There is no danger in getting the flu shot. My ob told me the dangers if I didn't and got the flu while pregnant. The flu is bad for you and a developing baby.

thats so weird...maybe i misunderstood them??

I just got my flu shot today -- my OB said I absolutely should get it since I've never had an allergic reaction to it in the past and he said just to go to any pharmacy and get it. I went to three different pharmacies today (I was trying to see which would be least expensive or would take my insurance, actually) and spoke to the pharmacists at every one of them and they all said the benefits outweigh the risks so much that the flu shot is highly recommended for someone who is pregnant.
Apparently there is a mercury derivative in the shot itself, but the amount is so little that they do not consider it a risk.
The flu can be deadly to pregnant women and their babies if you come down with a bad case while pregnant. I know there hare been articles on both sides of this, but there was never a doubt in my mind that I'd get it while PG. I couldn't get it for this year before getting PG because I got PG in April and they don't make it for the next winter that early. I did get the flu shot last winter in anticipation of TTC per my GP's recommendation. (I didn't get the swine flu shot, though, last year because the supply was too small and they were actually only giving it to already-pregnant women and the elderly in my area.)

I got it yesterday.. I never had the flu shot before, and I told her that I will be actively TTCing soon.. and she told me to get it, especially since I will taking the subway everyday, and I come into contact with children.

I've never had the shot. I never had the flue either. I don't see a need to get the shot.
And since I've never had it before I don't want to change any possible side effects.

No way, I am not one for the flu shot and H1N1 is just way too new for me. I work in a nursing home and I see how many people get sick (residents and staff members) after taking the flu shot. So for me it's a definite no even though I know if you are preggers your OB will encourage you to get the flu shot.
