Insight on Wedding Invite attire

We rec'd the invite to DH's cousin's wedding in the mail yesterday. Its at the NHP Inn. On the invite, it says, "Formal Attire". What do you guys make of this? It doesn't say black tie or anything else. It's a Friday night wedding. DH was going to wear a suit (as he does to every wedding) - me a dress. Does "formal attire" mean something else though??

I think a suit is perfect, maybe they just want people to know jeans are not acceptableChat Icon

Re: Insight on Wedding Invite attire

Maybe they thought since it was a Friday people wouldnt get as dressed up? Chat Icon NHP Inn is a nice place I would have dressed formally without it being said on the invite anyway

Re: Insight on Wedding Invite attire

Pretty much mean a nice dress and formal suit instead of a sports jacket or just button down and khacki pants.

My thoughts exactly. The only thing else I thought of was that maybe they are having a lot of out of town guests who wouldn't dress nicely. But who wouldn't dress nice for a wedding?!? Chat Icon

You'd be surprised! I was at a wedding last year where the brother of the bride had to be convinced to wear a tie. Despite the fact that it was his sister's wedding, in the Catholic church they grew up going to, where he was doing a reading, with a Saturday evening reception in a country club, he insisted that no one was going to wear a tie. Chat Icon He is in some family pictures before they left the house, without a tie.

And my wedding was at the Milleridge
Carriage house on a Saturday night & there were a few ladies in shirts & blouses or sweaters & at least one man without a jacket or tie.

I think you are on the right track though. Suit & fancy coctail or longer dress.

I feel like its always formal attire unless it specifies black tie Chat Icon

Unless they are having a day wedding? Sometimes people dress less formal for those.

ITA! DH has never worn anything less than a suit and tie to a wedding. I've never worn anything less than a cocktail dress - even for day weddings - and this is a Friday night wedding

Re: Insight on Wedding Invite attire

Technically, black tie = formal and suit = semi-formal.

from about.com:
A 'Black Tie' invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

'Formal' usually means the same as Black Tie. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Semi-Formal means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6 PM) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or dressy suit for her.

DH's cousin wore khaki's and a polo shirt to our wedding. That's how they dress to weddings in the South. They also wear jeans to church here. Our wedding was on LI. He was severely underdressed and it was noticeable, but I didn't care. Had I cared, I probably would've put something like "formal attire" on the invite.

Perhaps they are having a lot of OOT guests and expect people to dress down if it isn't specified?

I'm sure your DH is perfect in a suit. I would say you do NOT have to wear a gown.

That was my thought too. I'd think a dark suit and nice dress would be fine. If they wanted tuxes and gowns, they would've said black tie.

Re: Insight on Wedding Invite attire

I would assume they wanted suits and cocktail dresses. It sounds like they are worried that they have friends/family who wouldn't know to dress up for a wedding.

Re: Insight on Wedding Invite attire

Believe it or not, someone wore shorts and a blazer to my Saturday night wedding (church followed by country club) on LI. They’re probably just trying to get away from that! Cocktail dress and suit is most likely perfect.
