Cordblood banking- sibling question....

We banked both my DS and DD's cord blood....

If we should be blessed with a 3rd DC, would it be worth banking theirs Chat Icon

I am under the impression that the blood can be used for a sibling, so technically do we have "enough" to go around if heaven forbid need be ???

Knowing me, I will do it anyway just because I always feel like if I do for one,I need to do for all, but its is a bit of $$ so I was just wondering if its beneficial or not Chat Icon

I would say probably not. The chances of you needing that much is highly unlikely right?

IDK...what if the other two aren't matches and the third is? IMO if you are doing 2 you might as well do 3. For $100/year (+ the initial banking cost) it's insurance I don't mind paying. (I don't plan on ever using my car or life insurance, but I still have/pay it)

Re: Cordblood banking- sibling question....

Nope, you don't have to.. Baby#3 will be able to use (god forbid) either DC#1 or DC#2's cord blood. In fact, DC#3 will be more compatible with DC#1 and #2's cord blood than his/her own.

I banked #1 and #2 but then called up Viacord (who I used for those two) about #3 and that is what they told me.Chat Icon

Wow, I wan't sure if I'd get an unbiased opinion from the cord banking company ( CBR) ! Glad to hear they were so honest Chat Icon

Re: Cordblood banking- sibling question....

I just asked my dr this because we banked both dc #1 and dc#2...he said he thinks the answer is no. He said that the one thing he knows that a child can't use of their own is if they have leukemia, but being that we have already banked 2, that child would be able to use their siblings cord blood.

I feel the same way about feeling guilty about doing for one, and not for all. I think my husbands benefit fund may reimburse us for it, so if that's true, Im def. going to do it.

Congrats by the way!

Re: Cordblood banking- sibling question....

On another note, the amount of cordblood that you get from any one child will not be enough if an adult in the family should require it or if a child requires it when they are older. This is the reason that part of the research that is being done is about replicating stem cells. So, someday, if you have cordblood, there will be a way to make copies of those cells so that you surely have enough. We are not there yet, though. I would probably take my doctor's opinion. Even though there are kickbacks from the cordblood companies, I trust my doctor not to give an opinion that is entirely based on money.

I actually had my OB appt tonight...

He seemed to think it was over-kill Chat Icon

Now I don't know what I'm gonna do Chat Icon

I'm going to pick CBR's brain and see what they come up with (and how hard they try to sell me)..Glad I have some time to ponder this though Chat Icon
