38 weeks and im nervous

ok, the other night i read that salicylic acid in moisturizers can cause birth defects. i have a face soap that i used a few times during this whole pregnancy that has salicylic acid in it and now i am freaking out. (i used cetaphil but during a week when i ran out, i went back to using my salicylic acid face soap).

ive also been thinking about all the things that ive done and eaten throughout these 9 months, thinking that in the beginning i was pretty good with eating- almonds, fruits, hard boiled eggs, chicken, cheese, etc

and how towards these last few weeks ive been drinking some coffee (not even a whole small cup, but when i found out i was pregnant i stopped coffee); a few swigs here and there of soda, and ive been inhaling anything thats chocolate. actually, ive been inhaling a lot of things

i just pray that this baby is healthy

is it normal to be so incredibly nervous?
that face soap thing really threw me for a loop...

I am sooooooo nervous that since I have come this close something will go wrong. It is VERY common and you wouldn't be human if you didn't worry. But just think about all the things your mother probably did when she was pregnant with you! We have so much more medical care and know how, your baby will be perfect!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just think doctors know too much now and tell us to stay away from everything b/c there's a "slight" chance it can harm the baby.

Trust me we are all doing a lot less now than our parents did. Don't stress it, your baby will be healthy and happy.

Re: 38 weeks and im nervous

I use a salic wash every night- I read that a face wash or moisturizer with 2% is not going to cause any harm. The studies are talking about larger amounts of the acid- like what you would take in a pill form. I would not worry about it.

here's from babycenter:

Salicylic acid
This mild acid is used to treat certain skin disorders, including acne, and you can find it in a number of skin products, such as cleansers and toners. It can penetrate facial oils to get deep into pores and clean out dead skin cells. Salicylic acid is in the aspirin family, so it can also help reduce inflammation or redness. BHA, or beta hydroxy acid, is a form of salicylic acid and is used in some topical exfoliants to reverse signs of aging.

But salicylic acid is another no-no for pregnant women. High doses of the acid in its oral form have been shown in studies to cause birth defects and various pregnancy complications.

Again, doctors are being cautious by recommending that pregnant women avoid the topical use of salicylic acid. Small amounts applied to the skin — such as a salicylic acid-containing toner used once or twice a day — are considered safe, says Johnson.

But the concern is stronger about face and body peels containing salicylic acid. "This kind of 'soaking' in the ingredient is similar to taking one or more aspirin when pregnant," she explains.

"More product used equals more absorption into the bloodstream," adds Baumann. Always check with your doctor before having a peel treatment. Better yet, she advises, if you must have a peel, have it done professionally at your dermatologist's office. A dermatologist will know how to do it safely during pregnancy.
