2 more weeks... and I'm nervous for Alex
2 more weeks left in this pregnancy and the overwhelming emotion for me is concern for Alex and how she'll adapt to the baby and the new dynamic.
She'll be 2 months shy of 4 years old when the little one comes out. I've been prepping her like crazy, reading big sister books, playing with her baby doll and changing it's diaper constantly, talking to her about how the baby will cry a lot and how mommy will have to hold it a lot, and how mommy will have to stay home with the baby while she goes to school. I've also been talking to her a lot about the 4 day hospital stay and how Safta and grandma will be taking care of her.
I also bought her an obscene number of gifts to give her for each day she visits in the hospital, so she doesn't feel left out, and feels included in all the excitement.
Any other words of wisdom from BTDT moms??

No experience but it seems you are doing your best to get her ready! More than I have seen people do.
She will be fine! She will adapt.

beth i think you are doing everything right. you know that there is no way to predict how she will react when it's actually time but you are doing all you can.
maybe she will surprise you - and you know i will be coming to you for advice next year!

Re: 2 more weeks... and I'm nervous for Alex
I will be going through the same thing as you in 2 weeks so I can relate!!
However I'm not too worried...I honestly think it'll be ok and he'll be surrounded by people who love him and the adjustment will be alright. Maybe i'm totally wrong though Just trying to stay positive, and I know when the time comes I'll include him in as many things that he can do when it comes time to "helping" his baby brother...
My mom said the best thing to do when a new sibling comes along is to include them in little things like getting the baby a diaper, helping with a bottle, etc...she had 6 kids and there was never a jealousy issue or any other issue so I guess she has good experience!
Good luck!!! I'll be right there with ya!!

I think you are doing everything right. It is just going to take time for her to realize that the baby isn't going home. She is a smart cookie and I think she will be fine.

Re: 2 more weeks... and I'm nervous for Alex
i'm sorry i am of no help but i needed to tell you that i too have the same amount of time left before my arrives and i am SO SO nervous about my DD's reaction/adjustment. she is only 2 yrs old though so it's a little different. of course the logic in me realizes that it WILL be ok...but not sure of what will happen before it is ok. my DD is extremely attached to me-i joke with DH that she is "obsessed" and this is with me working and her going to daycare! anyway, i am really worried and will also be away in the hospital for 4 days. just wanted to share that you are not alone in your feelings. and that yes, everything will be ok!

Re: 2 more weeks... and I'm nervous for Alex
I don't have a ton of advice because Katherine was much younger when her sister was born--only 20 mos. I didn't go over the top in preparation only because I don't think she really "got it" during the pregnancy anyway. I did have a gift or two at home for her and everyone really did include her...when they came with a gift for the baby 9 times out of 10, Kate got one too.
In the hospital, you may want to have a couple of pictures of Alex in the bassinet with the baby. I remember Katherine getting a real kick out of that.
And as someone else had mentioned, even though Kate was really a baby herself, I had her help me with all of the baby chores she was able...like getting the diapers, washing the baby's feet in the bath...little stuff like that. I'm sure Alex can do a lot more!
In the end, it's going to be great...just know that!

not trying to hijack just thought i'd share that i got my DD a few little things. she is 2. i got her the My First Dollhouse (for when we get home) , some books (she's a total bookworm), and some little Dora stuff since she LOVES her! i know my SIL got my nephew one of those little laptops since he loves their computer and he really liked it and it kept him busy.

From the baby I bought a really sweet heart shaped locket, and inside I'll put a picture of the baby, and a matching bracelet.
Otherwise, I bought her a couple of DVD's she's been asking for, some arts and crafts, and a couple of cinderella dolls that she can play with at the hospital.

Re: 2 more weeks... and I'm nervous for Alex
I think you are doing everything you can to prepare her. When I came home with our new baby, DD really adjusted quite easily. She was younger though.
You may already know this but I will share it anyway....
Try to plan a special outing with just her and you as soon as you can. It's hard, especially with bfing but it can be a picnic in the backyard. It just has to be time with just the 2 of you.
If both of them need you at the same time...Alex will remember but the new baby won't. Go to Alex first.
Take time for you. It's a big adjustment to go from a mother of one to a mother of two. Sometimes that is accompanied with guilt and regret. It's normal so don't beat yourself up if those emotions creep in.
