I honestly feel SO sad for the struggles you both are feeling on this Buti there's one thing I can tell you it's that these 2 babies (and mine too) will NOT be looking at us 20 years from now and asking WHY you didn't BF them or BF longer... maybe their fiancees will but not them Mel especially for you, your Eddie is loved BEYOND measure, he's freaking ADORED by you, DH and his entire clan, and THAT is the secret of a happy childhood imho... don't let regret for things passed suck the joy out of the now. Regret is insidious and will do that without our even realizing it
youre so sweet!
I think particularly this article hit a really current and raw nerve with me bc of the mention of the allergy thing and everyone knows his current allergy plight.
I even emailed Dev, the other day and said, I have guilt about not being able to BF Eddie and that maybe I couldve prevented or lessened his current suffering if I was able to BF him.
So, this post definitely (and obviously) hit a nerve.
But thank you for being so sweet!
Stop calling me sweet you're gonna ruin my rep around here Eddie's allergies have been AWFUL, it must be so hard to go through that. But you must let yourself off this hook mama, they are not your FAULT! By your logic ALL FF kids would have 'em, and ALL BF kids wouldn't right? Clearly that's not true, so, not to go all Dr. Spock on your azz (the Star Trek one, not the baby onoe) but that's illogical. I know we'd do ANYTHING to avoid having our babies suffer, but the allergy/FF connection is not causative, and I hope your ped can assuage some of your mommy guilt on that; I hope you can talk to him/her if you haven't already
holy mother of god, see what happens when I'm busy non stop at work and can't come up from here...i cannot believe this thread went to 6 pages! I posted at 1
& Mel.....what Colette said You already know my take on your FF guilt and Eddie's allergies.

articles like this make me
one week they say abc is best and the next it's xyz.
i do NOT at all believe in the "breast is best" theory. to me, what's best is what makes mommy happy and healthy. a mom who doesn't want to BF, for whatever her reasons, will not be happy if she feels she has to do it.
DS was almost solely FF. he has no allergies, has barely been sick and is the happiest and healthiest child you could ever meet. do i think it's because he was FF? no. i think it's because he got good genes, and had a happy mom who wasn't worried about doing something she had no desire to do. the day i stopped pumping was the happiest day for me.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding
I started Bf in the hospital due to an insane amount of pressure from a lactation consultant..even AFTER I SAID I didn't want to. To be honest, I didn't want all of the problems that go along with it...even though DS latched and I was producing, I had heard so many horror stories, of allergies, milk not having proteins, and most importantly, not knowing if you DC is getting enough, weight gain issues (in the baby), and all of that just really helped me make the decision to stop.
My friend is strictly BF, and I see what she goes through, and I feel so bad, but she is working so HARD, and for that I applaud her. She is determined, and you have to be to BF. It is so hard, and I would nevder take that away from someone who wants to, can't, does, and thrives, whatever..kudos to all moms!!! I was determined too, to do right by me, DH, and DS. That is the same for ALL MOMS on here, no matter what you feed DC.
I will add that her DD has been sick 4-5 times, RSV, bronchiolitis, a rash, colds, terrible things to have when you are only 2-3 months.

DS is EBF & since being in daycare he's been sooo sick. Within only 4 days of daycare he developed pneumonia. Every month he's battling a cold. Currently both he & I are battling a doozy of one. So I agree that it doesn't help with everything.
Also, just because someone else has trouble BFing, don't think it's always like that & always a struggle. I was in fear by all the horror stories I heard. Other people's stories made me stress to the max that I was going to have the same troubles. Thankfully - I'm 110% honest BFing DS has been a breeze. No pain, no problems latching, no infections, no supply issues, etc. etc. I know it's not going to be like this with every child, but the same goes that not every child has issues. I think most of the times Mom's that EBF with no issues tend to not share their stories so all you hear are the struggles. I know I never share my experience with those I don't know - like on LIF.

I don't see anywhere in the article or in anyone's comments in this thread that said formula was bad. It pointed out benefits of breast feeding, and I think the article was trying to promote it. The fact of the matter is, breast fed babies are still in the minority in this country. This is largely due to the lack of support and information women get about it while they are pregnant and after they deliver. I am not talking about people who COULDN't breastfeed, or the people who made a personal choice after weighing the facts. I am talking about the people who simply didn't know breast feeding was an option. The women who may have thought about it for a few moments but then were shot down by their families. The women who wanted to do it when their babies were delivered but then got no guidance or support at the hospital and gave up.
I have to tell you, when I was pregnant NO ONE support me when I said I wanted to breast feed. In fact, pretty much everyone said I was crazy; that it would be impossible with twins. The LC at the hospital was busy and less than helpful. I think she spent all of maybe 10 minutes with me. I had to do it on my own. I watched videos online to show me what a correct latch looked like. When I was having issues with DS's latch, people told me to give up and give formula. The only support I had (and thank goodness for that) was DH, because he knew how much I wanted to do it.
The point of my long-winded story is that an article like this that points out the benefits of breast feeding is an advocate. If women got the education and support they needed, I believe more of them would breast feed.
ITA - I also don't understand where all the 'support' for Bfing is? I think it is quite the opposite. Most people are alot more comfortable with babies taking bottles than boobs! If I needed to BF at a park or somewhere in public, and even though I have a cover shielding me, people give such glares and looks of disgust. Does that happen when people give babies bottles? Also, if you work in a male dominated field, how comfortable is it to pump at work? Not very. I think when women are on the fence about bfing or ffing (again - when the woman CAN bf and decides not to), these things have an impact on their decision. If there were more advocates and support for bfing in this country, it could have an impact. I find it odd that people find there is so much support for bfing women - the only support I see is on the internet or siites like these...in the real world, I have not found people to be that supportive.

Studies for years have shown that breast milk is better than formula, this is not new research or do you just not believe in science at all?

I always wonder and maybe some of you moms who tried to BF and it did not work out for you or those of you who went straight to FF.....why do you get so upset over articles like this?
Is it because you believe breast milk is better and you are genuinely upset that you could not BF?
Or Is it because you feel guilty because you are being told that you should have BF?
I am genuinely wondering what gets people so up in arms over the BF issue.
If a study came out tomorrow saying that FF was better than BF I would still BF as I really enjoy BF and its so much more than just feeding my child for me.
FTR, THIS article is not offensive to me at all..
I believe that because moms are made to feel like they are not doing the right thing for their child by not BFing that is what causes all of the upheaval about it.
Yes, there are benefits to BFing, but BFing v. FFing is NOT that much different that women should be made to feel like they are doing something wrong by their (tiny) baby
ITA with Kate. This article was not offensive to me at all since it is not a "scientific" article, it is an opinion piece. My boobs did not work. You know what? I was kind of happy about it. For my 2nd child i will not even entertain the thought. I do not like the constant pressure to BF and being made to feel like I am doing something wrong by not BFing.
FWIW, this article mentions how hospital cost would lessen etc, but that is not necessarily true. Look at the other side of the coin. What if there were women who did breastfeed, but still do the "no no" things like drinking, smoking, eating unhealthy, etc... would that be better for a baby than FF? I dont think so.
I think everyone does what they feel is best for their children no matter what the reason why, and no group should be made to feel inferior because of it.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding
I just wanted to post this from pandaworms posting...it's an excerpt from a wonderful article that I think women who were INTERESTED in breast feeding should read...especially those who were ultimately unable to..
"So, now that you've heard the difference between what your experience could have been like, and what it was actually like, you tell me:
Do you feel guilty for not breastfeeding? Or do you feel angry because it didn't have to be this way?
And if you answered "angry," then take that anger, and write to your hospital -- tell them you want them to become a Baby-Friendly hospital, so that no one else will have to go through what you did just to feed your child. Write to your state and federal legislators -- tell them to support laws that make breastfeeding easier, like licensing of lactation consultants, and the requirement that insurance companies reimburse for lactation care and services. And write to your US representatives and senators, and tell them you want tax-credits for onsite childcare, and that you don't want the US to continue being the world's only developed country without paid maternity leave.
Yes, I'm a researcher and a physician, but I'm also a mother. Since I live in the United States, you can probably guess what my birth experience was like. Maybe you've heard me on the news saying that moms shouldn't feel guilty. I've been there. So take that guilt and turn it inside out, and do something positive so that other moms don't have to go through what you did. We all deserve better."

i don't give a rat's patootie what a studies say. what's best for a baby is what makes mom happy and healthy. i don't need science to tell me anything. and i am very scientifically minded.
my baby is healthy as healthy can be. formula did that for him it's not possible for him to have better health.

Re: Interesting article/study re: breastfeeding
DS was BF and DD was FF.
I had PPD and just could NOT BF her with a 16 month old to care for as well.
My LC made me feel guilty, my own mom made me feel guilty.
I am still FURIOUS about it. I did NOT BF her so I could survive and care for her and her brother. To heck with anyone else.
Both DD and DS are equally healthy and developing well. I saw NO difference in their health or development.

This is what makes me angry, when a mother is made to feel guilty for not BFing, and I know some LCs mean well but take it too far. A mother who has PPD has to do everything she can to take care of herself, or ultimately her children will suffer.
I am sorry you had this experience.
