Let's Talk Toilets...
Has anyone replaced one recently? If so, do you have an all in one unit like Kohler Rialto? If so, what do you think of it?
Any toilet recommendations are appreciated. We need to have some repairs done to our ancient toilet, and thought we might be better off replacing it and having a plumber install it rather than pay them to fix the old one.

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
The most frequent (and the only significant "repair" you really can do) repair is to replace the inner workings. Float, flapper, chain, etc. The whole kit is $15-$25, and takes about 10-15 minutes. I've done several replacements myself over the years.
I recently bought a dual-flush toilet, but for my next bathroom, I probably won't. It's a great toilet, but the $$ is too much to justify for water savings. I've seen retrofit kits that make a regular toilet into a dual-flush, so I may try that route next time.

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
our main bathroom is pretty old i would say 1960's if not 50's we are getting to the point of adding new parts to the tank every month since we owned the house. It still leaks into the basement occasionally. We are thinking we might not be able to swing a renovation of the bathroom until next year but we do not want to destroy our subfloor. So we are thinking of purchasing a new toilet and then replacing our old.
I would try to add new parts if you can do it yourself if you have to hire someone then maybe just put a new one in. They are not expensive at all $100-$250.
I was worried if we put the new toilet in, then take it out during the renovation we might have an issue but i was told by several contractors that they will guarantee if they crack it they will replace it. My BIL who most likely will do our work even said if he cracks it he will replace it. He said its a no brainier doing a toilet.

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
DH got these, but he could not repair it so we need a plumber at this point. We have had some problems with it overall, and there is a small crack in the tank so while we could repair it, we're concerned the crack might get larger and cause leaks over time. This toilet is probably circa 1951, so it might be time for a new one!
Yeah, the all in one unit models look nice, but they are pricey and as you said, probably not worth the water savings.

Yeah, this was another concern. We would like to redo that bathroom at some point, but it's not going to be anytime soon (maybe 5 years down the road maybe longer). Good to know, we should ask contractors if they will guarantee existing appliances before hiring.

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
We renovated two bathrooms and our plumber recommended the Kohler Wellworth model - he said that it's one he never has to go back and repair, unclog, etc. We went with his recommendation and we were happy with it. If you need a recommendation for a plumber I would recommend our guy.

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
We have all Kohler toilets in our house. My word of advice(being married to a plumber) is to get the toilets through a plumbing supply. You will pay a bit more than HD but the quality of the part are much better

Re: Let's Talk Toilets...
My parent's plumber once said that if a toilet got a crack, especially the older ones, and shattered it can cause severe injuries. I would just get a new one. I am all for replacing the guts of a toilet. In fact we have done it for 3 toilets in our house and did it in my parent's house too. However, if I saw a crack in the toilet I would replace it immediately.
