how much is too much?

where do you set your limitations as far as what things you can do, like lifting or strenuous housework or exercise? I travel quite a bit and make my husband carry my 40-50lb suitcase up and down the stairs, is that silly? Chat Icon

also, yesterday we got a new 46inch tv and i was scared to carry it from the car up with stairs with DH... how much is too much?

Re: how much is too much?

Honestly, anything over 25lbs I tried not to lift... b/c I learned the hard way, I did once and had sharp pains for 2 days... called the doc and everything was fine. I think it depends on you personally, but I would try to keep it light for these few months... live it up. LOL.

Re: how much is too much?

I think general rule, is do not lift anything over 25 lbs... I actually keep it less than 15 personally because I start to ligament pain and worse hip pain if I try for more than that.

i feel the same, better safe than sorry. i told DH yesterday that I didnt want to "dislocate" that baby by moving the tv, so my brother helped. Chat Icon

some girls work out pretty intensely for the first 6(ish) months so i guess it really depends on your personal preference and OB advice. Sometimes I feel like heavy cleaning can overdue it for me Chat Icon

Re: how much is too much?

I wouldn't go over 25 lbs. Personally, I try not to lift anything because I have back issues and arthritis on top of being preggo (cats and kids don't count here Chat Icon )

limit whatever you carry. i'm in severe back pain which i'm attributing to constantly picking up DD who is 24-25lbs. i did not have any back pain until labor last pregnancy!

I think the general rule I've seen in most baby books is not to lift anything more than 25 lbs. Obviously, those with toddlers will be lifting more than 25 lbs, so it's a matter of not overdoing it.

Honestly, I would NOT carry a 40-50lb suitcase, nor a large tv. So it's good you have your DH do that. DH carries all heavy things for me. I also have a bad back so I can't really carry even 25 lbs without my back hurting. Karin, cleaning hurts my back too!!!

When my back or hips start to hurt- it's too much Chat Icon

I unpacked my kitchen by myself last week and lifted/carried some fairly heavy boxes. After a few hours my whole body hurt. Chat Icon

I do alot of walking and just started taking a Zumba class once a week. It's soooo much fun. Most of it was really just hip movements and simple steps. Whenever she jumps around too much, I modify it.

Just be sure to keep hydrated!

PS- I make DH carry the laundry baskets from the basement to our room on the second floor- they aren't too heavy, but the stairs are rickety and I don't want to risk falling.

Re: how much is too much?

My doctor said nothing over 25lbs and housework is ok just watch the cleaning products that you use because inhale some of them can be dangerous to baby. But remember this is the time to relax and enjoy and have are men do aot more. My husband is soo over protective right now he wont even let me clean the bathroom. And Im actually loving it.

That's so funny because I make my DH do the same with the laundry... I tell him just carry it and I will do it but wouldn't you know he actually ends up putting a load or two in while he's downstairs.. I have no complaints.

Re: how much is too much?

I think everyone is different. Like you said, some women work out months into their pregnancies while some others just take it easy.

Personally, after a m/c, Im not taking ANY chances this time around. We literally moved into our new apartment this Saturday (the day of my BFP) and I told DH right away I was not lifting anything heavy.

Re: how much is too much?

I try not to carry luggage but I'm really bad, I definitely lift things over 25lbs when I need to- especially during the day when DH is at work. Plus, DS still likes to be picked up and he's 35lbs.

SAME! DH and his family are psycho about it. Which is very sweet to me. I dont know an exact poundage but I dont lift anything that feels to strain my back at all.

Re: how much is too much?

DH doesn't let me carry anything, not even a shopping bag. I heard not to carry anything heavier than 25lbs.

My purse I swear weighs about 25 lbs thoughChat Icon

Unfortunately, I can't follow this rule. DS weighs about 33 pounds and I still get the "up Mommy!"

But I try to have DH carry as much as possible for me or else he yells at me! Chat Icon
