Anyone planning on only having one child?

It seems like as soon as people found out we were expecting with our first, the next automatic question was "so are you going to have another right away?". I think I am perfectly content with the idea of having just one though. What are your thoughts though? Do you want more?

We will probably only have this one...we are both a bit older and only ever wanted one so I can't see planning for another.

Every one tells me I'll change my mind after I have this baby, but I really don't think so.

It's a personal decision and that's what I tell everyone.

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

Well since I am pregnant with #2...I guess we'll be having more than one.Chat Icon It was always our intention to have at least 2 children. I like the idea of siblings and a growing family. DH has 3 siblings and I have 1 so I think that helped us to envision more than one child.

You have to do what is right for you though. You may be happy with one forever or you may eventually desire another child. Feelings sometimes change after giving birth or watching your baby grow up a bit. Just take it day by day.

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

DH and I are kind of on the fence with this. DH has a brother and I'm an only child. Even though I missed growing up with a sibling, I consider my closest friends part of my family. DH and I dealt with fertility issues (I had endometriosis and only 1 working tube). My doctor said that I would have no problem getting pregnant on my own if we decided to go for #2. She said that if I didn't get pregnant on my own after 6 months of trying, then I would have to go back to my RE for treatment. I don't think I can do it again, if it came to that. I know some women try for years to get pregnant and it took 3 IUI's, 2 rounds of Clomid, surgery & 1 round of injectables to get me pregnant. It takes a toll on you financially, emotionally & mentally and I just don't think I can do it again.

When people ask about going for #2, I tell them we'll see how we do with this one before trying for another. Its a very personal decision and I'm not going to be dicated by anyone that we "have to" have a second child. I'll be 36 the month after I give birth to DD and I'm also unemployed, so those are major factors.

We have 3 Frozen embies and we will likely transfer all 3 at once. If I don't get pg with FET, then I'll be content with having one child. I do have one working tube, so we will not use any birth control.

Well, I'm going on my third but I can understand just having one. I was an only child so I guess that is why I wanted my kids to have siblings. I do think about if we only had DS#1 how different things would be. I would still be working and have been able to financially save more for his future.

I think it's great to be able to spend all of your time on just the one and it's so much more managable.

People always have something to say so just let it role off your back. As soon as we found out that DS#2 was a boy - th next question was - "will you go for a third so you have that girl"....At that time I was half way into my pregnancy with #2 whatttt.. People:)

DH and I hope to be blessed with at least 3 children. I love the idea of having a big family. I'm only pregnant with my first right now, so of course things could change. But that's what we're 'planning for' at this point.

I will be half way to 42 when I deliver so I suspect this will be our only child.

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

DH and I come from big families...i am 1 of 4 and he is 1 of 6 (would have been 7 but his little sister passed away just a few days old)...so family is very important to us. We hope to be blessed with 4 kids...i am not found of only children (not trying to offend anyone and please dont kill me) but a lot of only children are spoiled...dont get a long with others have difficulty with sharing and tend to not be good in social settings. Now thats not for everyone, but some of my experiences in life with only children. And also middle children worry me that is why we would like to keep it even if we can...But we will see what God blesses us with!!!! But my thoughts are the more the merrier!!!!!

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

I think having just one would make DH happy but I want our kid to have a sibling. Not only would they have a built in companion, but I just feel when the parents are elderly and the children become the caretaker, at least they'd have some help in that department.

DH laughs at this though. He has a brother and sister, and he's the only one fit to be a caretaker in his family!Chat Icon

Everyone has to make the choice that's right for them though!Chat Icon

I always imagined having 2; maybe because I am one of 2. My parents always said having 1 per parent was perfect for them. Chat Icon

I had trouble getting PG and had to do IVF for this one so there is a good chance it will be only 1 for DH and I. I am an only child and I am OK with the idea.

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

I don't have any siblings and my DH has 3, but he's not that close to his family in general...I really feel kinda lonely around the holidays (just my mom and a few family friends)

So I really want 3 kids, but my DH only wants 2...I would love to have more family around...because we don't have much family, I'd like to create more family...I don't know how my DH and I will come to an agreement about this.

Re: Anyone planning on only having one child?

Ideally I'd love to have one more. We have 6 frozen embryos from my last IVF cycle, and our plan is to go back to the RE in October to try to get pregnant again. Had my twin pregnancy stuck and I had not lost one of the twins, I would have said this was probably it. But I'm older as is DH so we'll give it another try next fall.
