Life without Gunnar...

My cat is missing. I'm pretty sure he's dead.
He's 18 years old, and just a few days ago started to try to get outside whenever we opened the door. He hasn't done that in years. We think he got out at one point yesterday, because we searched the house and he's nowhere to be found.
I think he may have known it was his time and he wanted to get out so he could die on his own terms...he's like that.
It just makes me so sad to think of him out there somewhere alone. We called for him, searched around the neighborhood...nothing.
After 18 years with him, it's so strange to not have him constantly following me around. I knew it was going to happen soon....I just thought I'd know when it would happen. Chat Icon

Re: Life without Gunnar...

Still no sign of the old guy. But he did leave behind about a thousand little clumps of his hair. And everytime I see one, i cry all over again!

Re: Life without Gunnar...

OH I am so, so sorry. I know what it's like to find little pieces of fur on your rugs and clothes, and it's like losing them all over again Chat Icon .

My gut tells me that you are right about why he disappeared. When my Smudge was 18, she got VERY sick--she went from being 14 lbs. to being 5 lbs, and she stopped grooming herself. Eventually she stopped eating. We made an appt. to have her put to sleep--but we insisted on letting her lay in the grass one last time. Even though she could barely walk, she kept wobbling over to the bushes and trying to get away from us.

They definitely know when it's time--and believe it or not, he probably didn't want to upset you by hanging around when it was time. I know cats are like that.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Chat Icon

That sounds exactly like what happened with Gunnar - he was always about 12 pounds, and recently, he got super-skinny and really dirty. He couldn't take care of himself, so we had to brush him and wash him.

18 years is a good like for a cat. He had lots of love, lots of fun, met lots of cats, got to live in a few different places, had me to torture.....he had a good life.

Keep smiling--that's exactly what kept me going when things got tough--to remember the kind of life that my cat would have had if we hadn't taken her in (we found her in the woods, abandoned as a kitten).

Hang in there--I know how special he was to you! Chat Icon

This is exactly what happened last February to our 18 year old Sid. I still can't believe that he got out when I was unloading the car/kids and I didn't even see him. Chat Icon

It's been 17 months and my almost 5 year old still mentions him. Chat Icon

Nothing. I've asked the neighbors and no one has seen him. I hope he's at peace now.
