Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I in no way agree with the verdict. I didnt agree with the Amadu Diallo verdict and I don't agree with this one. I've tried to read as many responses on this subject as I can because it is interesting to get the perspective of others. I'm sorry it kind of threw me off that there were comments like why was he out at 4am? Why did they run? First why does it matter that he was out at 4am? What does that have to do with this tragic situation? How does that have anything to do with him being shot? Why did they run? Here is my question did the officers truly identify themselves who in their right mind wouldnt peel the pavement if a gun was suddenly pulled out on them. People keep saying that the officers heard he has a gun. You know what, Im sorry but for the wives of NYPD maybe you should ask your DH about a website about a particular where many of New Yorks finest refer to people of color or in particular neighborhoods as savages and that they should be blown up or exterminated, or pictures of people hanging from nooses as jokes. I wont say all of NYPD is like this but it is scary to think that these same people are armed with guns in the streets and at times just looking for something. The same way you can say it's hard to be an officer and be scared for your life and never knowing what can happen (which i agree with) you can't truly speak unless you've been stopped for driving a nice car, your skin color determines that you shouldnt own it. Had a gun pulled and pointed at you in front of your family. For those people whove lost family members and the cops were acquited, what would your words to them be if it were your DH? Im sorry? Mrs. Bell will have to explain to her girls twhy theor Dad is gone, Sean Bell's parents lost a son. The police officers involved lost what? Please don't say their jobsChat Icon

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I am very happy with the verdict. The men/women of the NYPD put their lives on the line for our safety on a daily basis.

They did what they felt was right at that second. They thought their lives were in danger and had good reason to believe they were in danger.

I feel badly for the family, for the baby girls who will never know their daddy, but I agree with the judge's decision.

To the pp who asked how it can be a race issue when the cops weren't all white--

none of them were white. it's not a race issue.

Honey, if you're going to quote someone, you should quote a complete sentence:

"To the pp who asked how it can be a race issue when the cops weren't all white--I think it's a race issue because the victims were all black & assumptions were made based on that fact & also based on what the area is known for.

what???

what assumptions are you speaking of? the "assumption" of a gun being mentioned perhaps?

how about the fact that they didn't stop when told to or the fact that they had every intention of hitting cops with their car?

Yes, the "assumption" of a gun is the assumption I was speaking of.

How do you know they had every intention of running over the cops? According to reports, they just had some 'words' with a man inside the club & then someone in plain clothes pulled out a gun & told them to stop the car. They reacted by putting the car in reverse & flooring it to get out of there.

We weren't there

Okay, but you weren't there either. How do you know they didn't identify themselves? They say that they did.

that's right - WE were not there. so we cannot sit here and judge. that's already been done.

however, if a cop tells me to STOP or FREEZE, you better believe I will! I would certainly NEVER try and floor it or make a run for it. at some point, common sense has to prevail. they had none, sadly.

i am not starting drama, in fact you are the one starting the drama. i'm stating what is known in this case.

you said how do you know that he was gonna run over the cop?? he ran into the car 2 times. that's proof right there. and bringing up race is completely invalid.

they tried to run into the cops in their car, the police heard them say "get my gun" on their way out of the club (that's known to have gang activity, and other crimes) and the guy goes to get something out of the glove compartment. they were fearing that the man had a gun in the glove compartment and did what they were taught in the academy. protect themselves and others. they did everything they should have.

How many shots were fired again?

This is the last time I'm going to address you because you are known to start drama.

I asked that you, specifically, keep it mature because of your statments about people who think a certain way are idiots & because you say things like "you're points are invalid" (see above).

Everyone has an opinions, thoughts & feelings. Opinions are not facts & therefore, cannot be invalid. They should be respected. That's all.

Other threads aside, I don't think she's saying anything more dramatic than anyone else on this topic so I'm not sure why she is being singled out in this thread.

Right. And there are reports that they didn't identify themselves. I don't know what happened. All I'm saying is that I understand & empathize with both sides.

It's a tragedy. None of us can say we know anything for certain except that it is a horrible situation.

These topics bring strong feelings, with good cause, but I think all too often we all forget that the real issue is that a life was tragically lost, the lives of those cops will never be the same, and two little girls will not have a daddy. I don't know what the right answer is here. I hope all of those involved find peace.

the fact is, the cops heard him say something about a gun and ran out of the club. sean bell tried to run over a cop/run into a cop car (which could have killed the cop) and then the friend went to grab something from the glove compartment. a gun could've been in there. they couldn't risk it. i would've done the same thing as these cops.

im glad to hear the not guilty verdict. When I heard how bell tried to run over a cop/cop car before it happened... dh deals all day with auto injury claims/death claims and a car really can be a weapon by itself.

Shooting at someone FIFTY times speaks volumes to me. Perhaps not to you, so we'll have to agree to disagree like so many have on this issue.

It was MANY officers shooting (not 50 bullets from one gun). Should the officers all have a big coversation while a vehicle is being driven at them about WHO is to fire and how many times?

And the shots were not being fired at a man down on the ground but at a moving 2,000 lb vehicle and it ALL happened in a matter of seconds.
Not 50 mins, not even 50 seconds I believe. Anyone questioning the shots fired, have you ever had someone try to run you down, have you ever fired a gun, etc? I don't think so. Until your life flashes before your eyes when someone you hear say they have a gun, motion for a gun, drive their vehicle at you, I don't think it's fair to say you KNOW for sure how YOU would react. Those poor cops for being judged so harshly by those who believe they would act in any different way when faced with their own life or death.Chat Icon

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I just wanna say that I was unsure of my thoughts on the verdict, but after reading the judges verdict and really trying to put myself in the officers shoes- I'm in agreement with the verdict.

I cant imagine being in NYPD's shoes and having to make the decision "my life or yours".

To play devils advocate though:

Do you think this would've happened the same way to a white male? Do you think there would've been 50 shots fired?

Also:

Do you think this would've been made out to be what it was if this was a white male?

To answer my own questions:

I do think the officers would've made the same decision, as I do not think this had anything to do with race.

And, no- I think had this been a white male killed, it wouldn't of been made out to be as big as it is.. I think because he was a man of color, many took this and made it a racial conrtoversy.

But the officers firing were not white.

If race did play a role, then the officers are racist towards others who may even have the same skin color as themselves or who are not white, just as they are not? Chat Icon

Race played no role here at all.

I saw protestors on the news holding up signs that said Racist Cops..

If cops who are not white are racist towards others who are not white, that to me is reaching by far.

I dont believe it did- but many do believe that.... I was just asking the question...

Did you read my responses???

The only way I see race playing a role is the fact that this was made into a huge thing because it was a black man shot and so many people tried to say it was because he was a man of color...

Did that make sense?

I know you don't feel that way, I was just addressing the race issue in general, the public's outcry of it, not really you. Sorry, not meant for you. Chat Icon

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See this is what I dont get. Al Sharpton running his mouth about race..people standing in harlem with kkk hoods on with nypd written on them...even Sean Bells father saying it was because he was black. Two of the cops were black!! How could it be a racist matter??????? If anything, that right there is showing no respect to Sean Bell in itself. It wasnt about his color..he didnt get shot because of his color..he got shot because as I understand it..tried to run over police officers!! Witnesses said they heard the cops identifying themselves. How was it that they didnt hear??? And yes I do feel bad that he didnt return home that night..and yes I do feel bad that it will have to be explained to those 2 children...but would it have been more accepted if the cops didnt return home..what about their kids??? That would have been ok because its expected because they chose to take on such a dangerous, hard job???

My heart goes out to all. But in the end...as so many people have said...we dont know what goes into being a police officer. We dont know what its like to face death straight in the eye..we have had over a year to think about this case..hear different things..different sides..they men had seconds..seconds to decide. 50 bullets didnt come from one mans gun. 50 bullets can be fired REALLY FAST! No one won in the end. Sean Bell cant come back..the officers cant change their actions and honestly maybe even if you asked them to...maybe they wouldnt? They are human..you cut them, they bleed.

Re: NOT GUILTY on ALL counts!!!!

I honestly do see how people can think it's about race even though the cops were not white. I just feel like society as a whole associates black males with criminals & they are often times considered very threatening. When everyone is dressed the same, it's hard to tell thedifference between the professional who's enjoying a night out & the criminal who's up to no good.

So I don't think it's about white cops vs. black males, it more about judging them as criminals b/c of their race & other factors like location, etc.

So you think the black/spanish cops associated with this shooting feel threatened by black civilians? Who are we to speculate that? Just seems like a real reach IMO. And if a black cop feels this way, what might be the reason, b/c it's obviously not ignorance about blacks if he himself is black.

And location often attracts a certain crowd, no? That was why the PD wanted strip clubs such as this to be investigated, UNDER cover. Location and other factors often do play a role in what a cop might be up against. Not only was the location a troublesome one, but Sean Bell and his friends also had criminal records. Sometimes the locale does attract a certain demographic (that being criminal, drug related, etc). Sean Bell and friends were associated with crimes, prior arrests/convictions, in one aspect or another at some point (maybe unrelated to this night but troublesome and criminal nonetheless). You say, "When everyone is dressed the same, it's hard to tell thedifference between the professional who's enjoying a night out & the criminal who's up to no good."

Places like this are known for nothing good honestly. Hence the police undercover crackdowns (according to the judge). I highly doubt you have many professionals and saintly men hanging out at a place like Club Kahlua. The reality is certain places DO attract certain demographics for sure. And the cops KNOW the difference b/w who is trouble and who is innocent when they hear men talking about getting guns, ready to fight, etc. Bottom line. That's how they knew in this case, they didn't take a wild guess or even do racial profiling. They were undercover and the troublemakers were VOCAL about their desires to hurt/shoot/bicker, etc with each other and that was WHEN the police stepped in to do their JOB to protect and serve.

Read the transcript provided in this thread, it's pretty clear what happened.

I see what you're saying and def agree that profiling sucks.

in this case however - all 3 of them had criminal records for illegal gun possession and drug dealing. I guess what I am trying to say is... people who have nothing to hide don't act the way they did on that fateful night. and honest law abiding citizens would certainly never attempt to run down a cop with their car. these 3 men are not innocent people who were harassed by cops for no reason.
