Did you register for one of these?

I've read online that it is not best to put a head support inside the infant/toddler carseat due to problems with the baby being ejected. But, I've also read that they are very good for baby's neck support! Did you register for one?

I did. I haven't read anything about the baby being ejected. The head rest has holes so that the strap position is not compromised.

Re: Did you register for one of these?

I registered for something like that, but not that exact same thing. IMO, I would be more concerned that the baby's head would be moving back and forth than the odds of the child being ejected. Also, I wouldnt rely too much on things read on the internet. But that is just me.

Re: Did you register for one of these?

I had a head support thing for my infant carrier and when we took DD home the nurse said we should not use it. I don't remember the reason why but we took it out. DD had no problems not using it.

Re: Did you register for one of these?

The NICU nurses would not let us leave the hospital with a head support in place. They said something about the way they may push down and that being a SIDS risk. They said that the only safe thing is blankets rolled alongside the baby. They also said that any after market products could come between the baby and the seat in such a way that the straos could not be made secure. The blankets were all we ever used. We did not even use the headreast that came with the car seat. DS was tiny and this still worked fine for us. I looked online and there is not much good info about this. DH may have asked our pediatrician but I can't remember.

Totally agree. There is no way to know the safety of after market items so its better not to use them at all. This site has a lot of helpful info re car safety if anyone is interested. car safety

Our infant carrier has one in it already. A little difficult to tell from the pic, but it's there -

Re: Did you register for one of these?

In the original post, it looks like that baby is already in a bigger car seat (not the infant carrier), since they don't really recline I could see getting the neck rest.

But in an infant carrier, most come with one in it and like someone said the NICU nurse made me take it out of Hayley's infant carrier.

I've also read that they are not safe and was told by the nurse in one of our baby prep classes that they are not recommended. I returned ours. When we took her home from the hospital, I was nervous about her little head, however she was fine and always has been so I guess the nurses are right.

When I wirked in the NICU it was the same policy for us as well. Also, if you go to the police station to have you car seat installed and checked by them they will tell you the same thing!

See what your pediatrician has to say!

Re: Did you register for one of these?

I didn't register for it but I got one as a gift and all the moms at the shower were saying how great it was.

I hadn't planned on using it bc my carrier also comes with a smaller head support.

So, are the NICU nurses and hospitals saying that the supports in the infant carriers are also unsafe?

And sorry for the dumb question, but what does after market mean?

Re: Did you register for one of these?

Well I suppose if this is a serious issue, there is a reason for it. I will do what is deemed best for the baby. I would never risk her safety if it a hazard. I guess you learn something new every day.

I did not. I roll up on of his receiving blankets and tuck it on the side of his head where he has the most space (he tends to lean on either his right or left). Works just as well and I can adjust how thick I want the blanket to be to wedge in the space.

Holly, "after market" means things that you add-on that wasn't there originally. For example, if you add that head support thing to a carrier that didn't come with one originally. That head support thing would then be considered an "after market" part - not original to the carrier.

Thanks for the explanation! Is it okay if the carrier came with the head support? My snugride came with both a newborn head support and then I guess a head support for a bigger baby.

Re: Did you register for one of these?

To clarify, the head support that the NICU nurses did not want us to use was the one that came with the carseat. They did not even want us to use that one. They also mentioned after market ones.

When I posted about this, I was asking more about the infant/toddler careseat. Not the infant carrier you use in the beginning. My travel system carseat has the neck support already built it. But, we reigstered for the Britax carseat and I'm not sure the neck support is safe to use in that type of seat.

I think it's OK if the carrier cames with one since its "built into" the seat and its not an extra part that you add (that may throw off the measurements and stuff of the seat). Our seat came with one built into it and we had no issues when we got the carrier inspected (and with the nurses).

Re: Did you register for one of these?

I left the NICU with that in both my carseats. I needed to use it for both DS because they were so small.. they even passed their car seat test in it . It just gives them little more support and makes the seat a little more comfy . I used it in their infant seats untill i needed the bundle me and now I have it in their big car seats because their is so much room
