i placed this here instead of pets because of the conversation yesterday
i just went shopping. as i went into cvs, i noticed a dog barking hysterically in a car. over 20 minutes later i came out and he was STILL barking. i went over to the car and one window was cracked about an inch
so i called my mom to get the number of the local police dept. as i was calling her, a cop just happened to come into the parking lot. i told him what was going on and that the dog was in there at least a half hour with no fresh air and i didn't know what to do. i didn't want him to overheat or dehydrate. the cop was FURIOUS and said it's AGAINST THE LAW to leave a dog unattended in a car and the owner would get a ticket. he said i did the right thing. i explained i didn't want to call 911 because it wasn't an emergency, but i was so worried about that dog.
he got the license plate and summoned the owner from the grocery store next door. i watched the whole thing from the store. he spoke with her and waited there for at least 20 minutes. i don't know if he gave her a ticket or not because i couldn't see that clearly.
what is wrong with pet owners????? you CAN'T leave a dog in a car regardless of the temperature outside (today it's actually pretty warm). they overheat quickly and could DIE.
i'm so glad i was there and could do something. someone should leave that owner locked in a hot car one day so she knows what it's like. thank goodness for that police officer. he rocked.
i came home and gave my little furbaby a huge hug and promised her i would NEVER be irresponsible with her health or her life.

I applaud you!!! I never unstand why people leave the animal in the car. If you know your going someplace that you can not bring him/her in with you, then leave him/her at home, that way they dont get injured.

Just a tip for future reference. You can find the non-emergency number for your local police department here:
Suffolk County's non-emergency number is 852-COPS http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/police/phone.htm
Nassau's local precinct numbers can be found by clicking the drop down at the bottom of the page to this link: http://www.police.co.nassau.ny.us/1st_pct.htm

Yay police officer! Hopefully the owner learned the doggie should stay home if they can't go with the owner whereever he/she is going.

Honestly, I didn't know it was against the law. (See I CAN admit when I'm WRONG or DON'T KNOW something. )
Of course, I would NEVER leave my dog in the car for more than say 10 mins and it would have to be on a nice day (not too cold/not too warm) probably right around this time. I would NEVER risk my dogs life.
I now know and will refrain from making any stops while I have Arnold with me!
Thank you for posting this!

i didn't know it was either! i just knew it was morally wrong. he said she could definitely get a ticket, but since i didn't hear his conversation with the woman, i don't know what he did. maybe he gave her a warning.
i was so glad to see that the officer was as upset as i was and did something about it without pushing it aside. it made me realize that i didn't overreact.

please don't hijack this thread with nonsense. it's an important thing for people to take seriously, and i don't want ron to have to delete it because it becomes a controversy.

No, clearly you didn't. That poor dog too... To be barking for 20 mins, so sad.
Arnie hangs in the car and chills out. He's not barking, not whining, nothing. He likes going in the car, but I would never INTENTIONALLY break the law so no more car trips unless he's coming in with me!

exactly, now people know it's against the law. It's completely inhumane.
