Spring Hill Nurseries?
Has anyone ordered plants from Spring Hill Nurseries? They have some interesting plants in their catalog, so I'd like to give them a try, but if you have used them, did you have a good experience? Were your plants in good condition?
TIA!

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
I've ordered from a bunch of catalogs (not sure if Spring Hill was one of them) and the plants are usually in good condition but very, very small. It takes a long time for them to grow to maturity in a lot of cases, but as long as you're patient I'm sure they're great!

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
I was going to mention that they are very small as well. It will take at least 2 seasons to get the plants that you see in the catalog.

I always use Dave's Garden Watchdog to find reviews on vendors I haven't used before. Hope this helps!

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
Thanks Tricia. Great website to check out. Well Spring Hill doesn't seem that good. A lot of negative comments about their company. I think I'm going to try to buy local first. Link

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
I believe the Spring Hill is related to Breck's. I've ordered from Breck's and was pretty disappointed when half the bulbs I ordered arrived moldy or dried out. So if they're the same parent company, I would stay away.

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
I would agree that if you're patient enough to wait a season 2 you'll be fine

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
Thanks for the link! Spring Hill doesn't sound good, oh well. I don't mind waiting a season or two, but I want good plants. I'll probably try locally too. There are a couple of big nurseries not too far from home, and one medium size one in our town.
I didn't want to just get the usual petunias, impatiens, etc.

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
Oh wow, Breck's is bad. Really bad. Unfortunately, they had great catalogs and a lot of people got sucked in. I know I did, and learned my lesson.
A lot of the sites, especially the good ones, will tell you exactly how big the plants are that you're buying. If it's in a 3 inch pot, yeah, you're talking seedling.
I see gardening as something that rewards patience and cultivates it. I think that's why it's not as popular as it used to be. Investing time, sweat, and love into a garden is not as attractive as an instant result.
I still love it and hope to see more threads like these here. I'm going to wind up spending a lot of time preparing my yard rather than planting it. So I must live vicariously through all of you in the meantime.
So please update on what you get and where!

If you're looking for ideas, check out Bluestone Perennials plant search. You can search by bloom time, color, height, sun/shade...

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
I love using catalogs like Spring hill to get ideas, even their pre made Garden sets are great as ideas sometimes. They have a layout & show a picture or 25 plants or whatever that you can plant in a certain arrangement to get a complete look. You can take that list right to you local nursery & buy what you need to get the same result. I ordered from springhill the first summer in our house & out of everything I bought only the butterfly bushes lived. very disappointing.

Now that you mention it, I think I just got this catalog the other day. Because I saw the picture and then the list of plants and I thought the same thing - that it's good for ideas.

Re: Spring Hill Nurseries?
the catalog was def great for ideas. But I think I would rather shop locally so I know what I'm getting. At least for this first year. Maybe in the future I will buy from a good catalog company. Thanks for your input ladies!
